"We don't tell a story, we tell a situation these days" This is the most accurate description of what separates quality filmmaking from the blockbuster crap we see today.

That's so true about his point on situational movies rather than having a story unfold. I think that just means that situational is like for example, a meteor threatens to destroy the world or an alien invasion happens. We already know the beats of both of these situations. We know that the meteor will be destroyed and the world will rejoice or the alien invasion will be defeated by our lessor technology. A story to unfold on the other hand is a more intriguing concept. Imagine being unable to turn away, having the impulsive urge to need to know what happens next, not how it ends or questioning "whens the action gonna start?" but being so immersed by the story, all you carve is to know what happens in the next scene, having the ending catching you completely off guard because you forgot you where watching a film. We have lost these types of stories and we need them back.

He summarized so much with a few sentences. Most movies tell situations. They can be very interesting movies, even great. But all the movies where I sat down and had incredible fun viewing were story movies, where events unfold and develop.

I like his interviews better than his movies. His passion comes across - even in the face of a crappy interviewer like Rose who likes to try to bully his subjects into agreeing with his assessment of them. You can see here that Tarantino has no trouble disregarding him and saying what he means to say.

@ohigetjokes I suggest you buy and read the book Quentin Tarantino interviews. Its a great collection of interviews from Tarantino. They talk about his creative methods in film, and also his ideas behind the politics of movies. This interview is actually in the books so you will get the full interview, his interviews are great he does like to talk and shares his wisdom fantastically! However I would also recommend the "Round table" interview with some of the top directors of 2016 (I think) and that has some great conversations, with a mix of opinions in it. Hope that helps!

@ehmiguel7602
6 жыл бұрын
Oly1y I think he explains it at 2:13. A story is supposed to unfold and actually be a story. A story keeps your attention and surprises you, with the way it's being told to you. You aren't supposed to know how a story ends after the first 5 sentences or the first 15-20 minutes of a movie. A situation is when the gist of the plot is already given to you. You are told what the story/movie is about and you practically already know how it's going to play out. I think the the difference between a good story and a situation.

could somebody explain to me clearly in a well defined non wishy washy way what he means by letting the story unfold? im really trying to improve the quality of my videos in the future
@ehmiguel7602
6 жыл бұрын
Sodium Raccoon my biggest recommendation is if you haven't already, go watch one of his movies. Specifically Pulp Fiction and watch how it unfolds. Letting the story unfold means letting the story flow and happen as naturally as possible given the context of the story. If you notice, there are alot of scenes that are very dialogue heavy in his movies. Why are they there? Won't the audience get bored? No, because that helps unfold the story, and forces the audience to pay attention. It really depends on the story you want to tell. My biggest advice is, when you are finished with your script or story that you want to tell, ask yourself this. How would you tell this story to another person? If you were asked to tell a story and you chose this one, how would you go about telling that to a group of people who are listening to you? What details would you leave in, what would you take out. It has to have a beginning middle and end, but how do you get there in the most entertaining way possible. Once you are happy with your story and believe that you are bale to tell it properly, translate that into the video you want to make.

I still don't get it man. The centre of your explanation was the line 'Letting the story unfold means letting the story flow and happen as naturally as possible given the context of the story'. what makes a story flow? what makes a story natural? what do you mean by the context of the story (do you just mean the story?)?
@sodiumraccoon991

@@sodiumraccoon991 A story flows in a natural way in that the transition of its scenes makes sense within its context -- this often looks like having something that hooks the audience and makes them want to see the next scene, and then having the next scene travel closer to revealing more and more. just an example of something a story might do. when it doesn't flow/isn't natural would be when, for eg, a scene doesn't contribute to the main 'hook' or plot point-- then it wouldn't be moving the story forward, and wouldn't hold the audiences attention. if any of this makes any sense. there's not objective way this looks like (which is why context is important, and why the answers to your question is vague and might not make sense) it really depends on the circumstances unique to the movie. for the best way to understand this, next time you watch a movie, be aware of these things and you can start to compare movies and see what works and what makes a story more static or more 'situation-based'.
