I just signed on for a consult. You are the first color consultant that I've heard that is honest that sometimes our natural hair color just doesn't look good on us! So often I hear, well, your natural color is always what suits you best...actually, no, it isn't! In my case I have very fair skin with a warm undertone but my natural hair color is a mousy, ashy brown that drained me. In my twenties, I started dying my hair a warm, reddish brown and never looked back. Now, my gray is coming in and, if anything, it looks worse than my natural mousy brown. It's so disappointing. I see so many women embracing their silver sparkles and looking vibrant and lovely but my grey hair makes me look like I'm already dead! I'm really hoping that you can give me some tips that don't involve continuing to dye my hair for the rest of my life even though I know that may be all there is for me to do. :(

Although my (younger self) natural brown hair suited me, my now very white hair looks terrible as a True Autumn, so I somewhat feel your pain. Unfortunately I will be continuing to colour my hair for a long time. People with cool undertones have a huge advantage when they go gray/ white. Enjoy your analysis!

Great advice! I'm a warm spring and you are very right that ash colors, black, and blonde do not look good on me. And if I go red, it has to be super yellowish orange. Cool reds or rosey soft brown looks bad. It has to stay bright and very warm or it turns me green lol

I'm a dark winter. My natural hair is the darkest cool brown almost black and my skin is fair olive. So, a big contast. I tried many hair colors. Loovee red and ginger but looks awful on me, brown as well. I had blonde(not ash not golden..but pearl and creamy)and looks great on me. Right now I let my greys grow out and add more highlights and because of my contrasts looks good, its not the best but Im tired of dark brown hair dyes that pull redish and jet black washes me out. Struggle is real 😅

I totally understand! A cool grey on an Autumn can make you feel out of harmony. Your undertone won’t change as you age. If you’re a True Autumn, you’re still warm, not neutral. You’ve likely lost value (depth) and Autumns need depth, and it’s possible the grey has increased intensity (and True Autumn’s shine in lower intensities/muteness). Are you open to coloring your hair? I have seen so much impact with only warming up the pieces of the hair framing the face. And a creamy ecru works depending on your skin overtone. You don’t need to maintain a dark warm brunette (or any other hair color you had previously)

I have no problem coloring bits of hair (foils). Depending on what that is. I find "blonding" burns my hair. I have very fine hair. And also wondering. As the neutral foundations seem to be working currently... if I'm a "True Autumn "... I was told i was an autum when there were only 4 seasons... so maybe I'm not a true autum?? Those are the colours I tend to be attracted to tho?

I’ve been told by hairdressers that I can go cool or warm with my hair. I was given a soft summer result on a consultation and some colours suit me but a lot wash me out. Anything too chalky does me no favours. I’m still not ‘there’ yet with all of this and I think it’s that neutrality I’ve got that’s messing things up a bit. Dark brown hair (cool though) Hazel green eyes (lots of gold in them) Almost a pale olive skin colour that I find impossible to match foundation to. Everything’s too pink, too yellow, or deathly pale. A real mixed bag. Going grey now too which only adds to the mix n match 🤯🤣 Does anyone else find themselves not fitting into any one category?

I am very close to your characteristics! I tan really dark in the summer, but am a light olive skintone with no tan, hazel eyes that lean green or gold depending on what I wear, and natural medium gold/neutral brown hair. I feel your struggle 😭 I felt like I was a warm Autumn, but they say black isn’t a color I should wear, when I feel black is one of my best colors. I feel as though I can fall into Warm Autumn, Muted Winter, and True Summer. Sometimes the neutrality can be a curse lol 😂

Gosh blondes do not do well in your analysis! I have never been consistently typed by any colour specialist. It has now become a sport. So far my results have ranged from true winter summer and deep autumn. The only thing I am certain about is I am not summer and not spring. That my own conclusion but it still leaves a whole lot of options! I have very olive very pale skin and ash blonde hair. I don’t fit into anything you’ve explained but I appreciate the detail!

In my attempts to do a self-color analysis I typed myself as a Cool Summer (I was 100% sure I am Cool), but then I went to a professional and it turned out that I am a True Winter. I was quite close, but I am very aware with color theory (being a graphic designer) and I have the eye of an artist. Even with this background I was not able to type myself right. Because I dont know many details about color analysis. I didnt know that your natural hair color is not a very important indicator. My natural hair color was quite light and this is the reason I excluded the possibility of being a Winter. (I dyed my hair black-brown a decade ago, I hadnt even heard about color analysis that time). MY POINT IS - If you hesitate between some kind of Summer and Deep Autumn - these have nothing in common - you need a more professional approach ;) Knowing your right palettte is such a joy, such fun, a blessing 😊😊

Any tips for a greying dark autumn? I have been dying my hair a mid copper brown for ages, but the contrast with my roots is now becoming more noticeable. Challenge is my colouring seems to suit a certain amount of depth - my eyes always pop more when I have refreshed my colour after it has faded, but I don't want to end up looking sadly artificial as I age.
@thecolorconsultant

Hi Estelle! Is your natural grey coming in warm or cool grey? Some deep autumns choose to grow out their grey (if warm grey) and then use a stone beige-equivalent color to color correct for their palette. If you would like to keep dark, I only recommend mid copper browns colors to True Autumns not Deep Autumns. Especially as it fades and becomes more brassy. Deep Autumns are neutral-only slightly leaning warm not fully warm (like copper/orange-based browns) and need a lot more depth (darkness). And a hair color that truly harmonises with your natural coloring will not look artificial on you like it would on another, you’ll shine.

Thanks. I think my grey looks quite cool. Rarely leave it to get long enough to really judge. I am wondering if maybe I have the dark autumn wrong - when I had my colours done, they only did the four main seasons, and then which shades were your best. In later years, a different consultant who saw my palette described it as blue autumn, which I think I read somewhere as also means dark autumn, but maybe I got that wrong. I say this as I have always thought I looked better when I have gone for a warmer brown than a more neutral one... Having said that, for foundation shades, I have often found a neutral undertone to work better than a warm one, depending on the brand. Maybe I should think about going back to see someone for some more in person advice.

@@thecolorconsultant the first Lady just did the 4 seasons and said ‘winter’. The Second Lady does more tonal and said ‘clear’ and ‘cool’. I’m definitely not as bright as bright winter, but I do need strength and depth to my colours. Violet, cobalt, true blue, look good on me. Pinks I find harder. I’ve realised I can’t do any warmth. I have dark hair, brunette, pale skin that can look sallow/ yellow (fooled me into thinking I was warm) blue eyes with a yellow overlay, some amber in there and a dark blue/grey limbal ring. I’ve always considered my eyes blue grey, a friend recently told me she always thought my eyes were green. When I had my analysis done, the colour that really made me sit up was a dark taupe, called pewter in the swatch book.

@@cathwalsh9921 Yes! A yellow overtone leads people down the wrong path! If you are fully cool and not as bright as Bright Winter, you would be True or Cool. If Summer colors are a hard no, then you would be True. Still high intensity and fully cool. Pewter is a typically a muted grey for Summers though. True Winter can wear a whole range of high intensity greys very well though. Taupe is typically for Summers unless it was a high intensity version of one. If you are True Winter, then you should shine in cool pinks. Most pinks are cool. Hot pinks, fuschias etc.

I've heard that you should dye your hair in about the same degree of darkness as your natural hair color. That you don't fit in the color if it's too light for your natural hair color, or too dark. What do you think about that?
@thecolorconsultant
3 ай бұрын
Yes, typically two levels in either direction of your natural hair color is recommended. I have seen this to be good advice for most clients because their natural hair color (or close to it) ends up being their best color. However, I have worked with many exceptions to this too. You don't want to go too dark, say if you are a Light or True Spring. If you are a Deep Winter/Autumn, going lighter will not create harmony.
@LJ-qf5xn

@@thecolorconsultant Do you think that you can be a naturally blonde - medium brunett, be a winter, and then not look good in dark hair dye? And still you are a winter?
@thecolorconsultant

@@LJ-qf5xn So it is not common for blondes to be Winters. Many color analysis systems do not believe that it is possible because most natural blonde hair presents warm. But it is all about the skin and there are always exceptions, and I have seen quite a few! But here is the thing - if you really are a True Winter you will shine in deep colors (not just icy lighter colors). You look good in deep (+cool/intense) colored clothes and so you must also look good in deep-colored hair. So you can be a natural blonde Winter but you must also look good in deeper hair colors.
