@@edwinbarnesjr6793 it got to a point where I couldn’t even pay the minimum on my 2 credit card anymore after missing a few payments so I stopped paying them all together. Yes my credit score was ruined because of this. So I had to call the credit card companies to settle with them. I owed $15k to Discover Card, settled with them for $7K. Had to borrow money from family members and my retirement to pay them in full. I also owed Capital One $12K, they Settled with me for $6K I’m paying them in monthly installments interest-free. Even though the account is closed because the balance decreases each month it actually helps my credit score. My score also saw a big boost after the Discover Card balance went to zero. I was able to open a new card with Capital one last December and got approved for $3,000, which also help my score because I keep the balance low and pay in full each month (lesson learned). I have two more payments left on the closed account with Capital one, once that hits zero I should see another boost in my credit score.

"Treating yourself into broke-dom" had me cackling. Seriously such an important message. No one is telling you not to get something nice within your means every now and then but you know what's going on in your life. Lying to yourself about your financial status is hurting you; other people are not going to care. I'm thankful to have always lived in areas with serviceable public transit and I saved so much money with no car. Enough to invest in me and get a much better job. Now I work from home and could I get a car within my means, yes. But why would I when I've never personally needed one? I understand and support living in and being thankful for the current moment. Not "living like there's no tomorrow" cause if tomorrow comes then where does that leave you. Live life with a little responsibility and forethought.

Through my work, I can get a discount added-value bus pass - I pay $10 out of my paycheck, and $30 is added to my pass. It does limit where I can go. I’ve only owned 4 cars and all of them completely outright. I’ll still purchase outright whether a car is $1,000 or $25,000 so the concept never changes for me regardless of the dollar amount. I’ve seen and heard it all with things going wrong on monthly payments and that’s something that I avoid like the plague. I’ve ignored the noise of being told by other people, “Get yourself a newer car so you don’t have to worry about it breaking down.” Any car can break down no matter what it is and how old it is as well. In addition, there’s plenty of car dealerships out there who screw people over out of repairs saying something is “not covered by the warranty” when really it is supposed to be covered so now not only are you making monthly payments which most likely you can’t afford but now having to pay out of pocket repairs as well, a total double whammy.

Dream car 😂 My husband and I bought our first brand new car when he was 51 years old, I was 48. He drove used cars that he paid cash for, exclusively until last year. When asked what I was looking for in a car by the salesman, I replied, “I don’t want to appear as if I’m overstepping, but I would really love it if all of the doors could open and shut properly.” That’s how low the bar was. We bought a Toyota. Why the switch at 51 years old? Because he works swing shift and was white knuckling it every night hoping he would make it home. He’s got high blood pressure at this age and doesn’t need that stress. Now. At 51 years old. A dream car in our 20s? There wasn’t even room to think about such things. Warranty and road side assistance, glad to have them but we waited a long time to do it. You know, now that our kids are grown 😊

Treat yourself to nice tub of ice cream, treat yourself to that new movie that just came out, treat yourself to a nice dinner. Above all, treat yourself responsibly at all times. Paying rent or buying a house is already expensive. You'll never be able to buy a house if you choose to drive around in a car that costs the same or even more a house downpayment. A car can easily be repo'd but it often takes months, sometimes years before a house can be foreclosed. A flashy car won't keep your belly filled, clothe or shelter you. Showing off or trying to keep up with the Jones who can't even keep up with their own bills is an eternal black hole of financial destruction. Having a working car is a need, having a flashy car is a want. People need to know the difference and practice financial modesty.

Since I’m on the higher side of the five digit income range, I honestly have no idea how people are affording car payments in the $500+ range. It’s just such a massive chunk of your income.

I got an older used one when I was 21. Best decision because whenever something goes wrong with it there are plenty of videos on here to teach me how to fix it.

Chevy's are another good car...I have a 09 Malibu and it still rides great. The seat might not move anymore but I can fill up once a week/week and a half and still have money to eat for the week. That's successful to me

I am going to have to buy a car very soon. Before that point comes, I’m saving up to have a good sized down payment on something newer, but used. I think some people might be bad at budgeting. I also think some people were not aware of stuff, or had any kind of guidance. That’s not an excuse, but I think something that supports the statistics you mentioned. I am looking forward to having a newer car though. This purchase is out of absolute necessity, my 20 year old car can no longer be saved.

I had the option to lease a full-featured hybrid car in 2016. And after the term, I refinanced to own. I don't drive it everyday because I WFH so very little wear and tear after 8 years, and because the maintenance package was put into the monthly price, I only pay literally $8 for the air filter. Those car dealers look at my seemingly "green" self in disbelief when I go in there for maintenance. The dealer reps ask to buy my car back. But the car they were trying to give me was a just above basic *gas* model with a $650 car note, (over $200 more than my note) 😭 like immediately no. Do your research. it saves so much time and money to critically think.

I have had some lovely cars - over time I learned that this was a waste of my £ - I bought myself out of my contract (I owed a small amount and all the calculations made sense to do so) and went down to 1 really small car, which I had also paid the balance on and owned it. I did need to increase the size of my car when my grandchild came along - I traded my small car, paid the shortfall of £3,000 from my savings and outright own my 8 year old Mercedes A Class. It is great, low mileage, well looked after, reasonable insurance, low tax, has 12 months warranty, breakdown etc and is really well specced up. Happy it is mine outright.

Worked all the time to pay for my Toyota Corolla. Payed it off in full January last year. So glad so I can relax now. I see people driving these nice cars all the time and feel bad. But I’ll remember they owe a car payment every month and feel better.

I financed my first car -Camry- in 2015 at 228/month, 601 FICO, and making about 25k annually. After 4 years of waking up at 3am to make sure they come repo my car due to late payments, I paid it off. When I started making 60k in 2020, I decided to get an SUV and by that time I'd saved nearly 20k (started saving in 2016). My brother & I drove out to Ohio and picked up my dream car that I had researched thoroughly that had EVERY amenity that I wanted. Dropped 16k on it and have been in love with my suv ever since😊

I am finally on my last payment for my car. I really wish I could’ve found something less expensive, but I took my parents all around town for months, trying to look at 1st or 2nd gen RAV4s. The previous car I had stopped on me in traffic going up a hill after work. I’m grateful my parents helped, but I don’t want to do that again for a very long time. Upkeep is not for my poor self 🤣 I totally hear you! Teslas getting towed by me in Seattle 💀 Subscribed 😄

Buy used, have no regrets. Got a 2011 ML350 Mercedes and put over 100,000 miles on it since purchase. Price was $15k and $250 monthly payment. No issues and maintenance has been really affordable with my local mechanic and doing things myself as well. NEVER buy new, learn car skills, and always do research.

So much of this is because of young car enthusiasts. Particularly ones that live with their “not rich” parents and instead of saving, they burn the money on a scatpack at 19

2018 Hyuandai Sonata owner here, I couldn’t recommend this car enough if you’re looking for good gas mileage. I’ve never paid more than $50-60 Empty->Full and I get up to 600 miles on a full tank! Maintenance is light weight as well so far (2 years owned)

My motorbike on the other hand: 1. Looks great 2. Can go FAST AF 2.1 Requires actual skill to ride 2.2 And balls 😅 3. Can usually be bought cash (not much of it, so not all that expensive) 4. Is actually truly enjoyable to ride. Even if the weather's miserable. 5. Isn't built to fall apart after 5 years (well... the Japanese ones aren't anyway. Also enough bikes get crashed by muppets, so there's no need to "help" them to the scrapyard at the design stage) 6 Teaches you to pack light, wherever you're going. This includes not overspending at the mall, since you've got to carry it all home somehow.

Take it from me: invest in getting your motorcycle license, not kidding. Insane gas mileage, easier maintenance, easier to work on, cheaper fixes, better parking, cheaper entry if you wanted to go new, makes you a VASTLY better driver, is cooler than any car. Plus, if you wreck a bike, youre usually not around to worry about the cost of fixing it / insurance hikes!

I didn't buy it for other people but because the bucket was going out lol should've gotten something 10 years old cause I can calculate how much of my check goes to this car and its not cute. I could be traveling the world with this money, literally

Living in London when somebody wrote off(totalled) my bmw. Probably the. Est that could have happened. Insurance paid out and all the extra costs associated with driving I’ve been able to spend on moving to a better apartment. If I wasn’t living in London I’d just find the most cheapest and reliable car to run

I will always always buy a car with cash. I try not to get into debt if I can help it. This means I will only be using secondhand cars and never brand new ones, but so be it.
