When my dog happens to get off lead, I just turn around and walk away, like I'm leaving her behind. You should've seen just how fast she runs to me. Doesn't happen often but works every time.
@Lordp00m

Jup same here. Most dogs, but especially GSD's, always want to be with you. So walking away will usually help. Running after them makes things worse since they think you are joining them.
@Karina-Loves-Andreas

You guys are both so right on this!! My GSD rarely "gets away", but if I freak out & run after, THE WORST THING I CAN DO. If I turn around, act like I don't care & might even leave him---boom, he's on me like white on rice. It's very hard to do though, when I'm terrified he'll run in front of a car or something. Thank God he hasn't gotten out with a prey animal around, don't think my walking away would work then. Obviously, we're working on recall.

I had a pit that didn't like dogs and he got out once and I was afraid he'd attack a neighbors dog. I chased him probably a half mile in my socks. I finally gave up and started walking home and he ran up and jumped on me... It was a fun game to him.

I don't know man, I love having my dog off-leash but if you can't trust them to stop for roads on themselves they're not ready. E-collar or not. Practice letting them stop every time you cross on-leash. When that's completely second nature, that's when you allow them to go off leash, in safe environments. Think 15mph/30kph zones. Throw a ball on the street when there's no car coming, remind them of staying on the sidewalk. All that stuff has to come before trusting them to run off on their own, even with an e-collar. I got one street that I regularly cross on the way to the supermarket, and there's hardly ever a car coming. So I got lazy, and just crossed every time. Even though my dog knows the dangers of cars, and knows to give them right of way, this conditioned her to just cross this street. She doesn't think we're crossing the street because there's no car coming, she thinks when we get to that street we cross it. So she almost got hit by a bicycle the other day. My point is, don't get lazy with this stuff. You can teach them a lot of self-management but you have to stay on top of them executing it well.
@dorottyajakab9371

I completely agree with you. I had several dogs so far and all of them could learn to stop at the edge of the pavement and do not cross roads till I do not say they can. Of course, I had a dog who catched it very quickly others took months and months to became really stable with it - and I think the later is the normal cause it is a hard task to do in every situation but they are able to do it. Also, I never let them off leash near to very busy roads where a lot of cars and people pass, cause it is just not the place to let a dog off leash even if I know they would be able to deal with it, I do not want them do that.

Lovely explanation with the helicopter, seriously some good stuff. I would love to see some content on separation anxiety between dogs. In my case if I leave my home with one and the other is in the crate, they cry and bark the whole time I'm gone; that's after a long walk/training session as well. Honestly, it might iron out over time the more they are worked separately since some of their reactivity comes from feeding off each other up while we are out (I have a Carolina Dog that is super anxious and whines/is reactive). They are both different dogs when separated. If you have a video about this already I'm sorry haha! You put out so much content it is sometimes hard to find specific topics, Thanks and great video!

I use it so he can be offleash when no one is around in the early mornings. Because he loves to run and it helps release energy. He doesn't go out of sight but the collar is like a safety net for me just in case.

This just to teach her how the e collar works. So now I'm wondering if from now I should use the e collar just in case she doesn't listen to me, or I should continue to call her like I did until now with a very low stim.. An ecollar has been the only training method/tool to allow my prey driven hunting dog off leash freedom. After 2 years of unsuccessful long line training, I had just about given up on ever trusting her recall. 2 months of daily ecollar conditioning through lockdown and I now rarely have to use it, even when she's in the bush on a scent, a whistle is usually enough, or a tap set to 10/100 to break a deep focus. I've only gone up to a max of 30/100 during training and that's been enough for her. Her and I both thank you for the training.

It is SO hard to find information like this on how to use an Ecollar for correction! I'm trying to learn how to use an Ecollar to correct bad behaviors like jumping, biting, chasing dogs. This is the first video I've been able to find that explains this at all. Increasing the level when a dog isn't listening to you makes sense, but what about those negative actions that happen and end quickly and don't correspond to a command (jumping, biting)? For those, can you do a higher level immediately or maybe do the vibrate?

I have a question. I have a 5 month old Irish Wolfhound. I am beginning to train him off leash. I think at times he forgets that he is on the leash. I correct him as if on the leash and he complies. I practice stop. Then stay and then recall where I increase the distance daily. My other dog a lab mix. Trained from 6 yrs old (a "foster failure") who is now 9yrs old aprox. walks offleash with me on busy streets etc. He was abused and tied to a tree his entire life up until he was rescued. He ate a lot of birds etc and reactive to everything in the beginning. He was/is a large dog, 87 lbs of muscle. (Of course my now 5 month old Irish Wolfie outweighs him by 14 lbs and a few inches in both height and length) "Yuge!" Anyway so with the background info done. I haven't ever used anything like what you speak on. I am not against it either. I just obviously haven't needed it. Is this then something that you recommend for issues later in life? I am a Free Lance Trainer and I get my clients thus far from them seeing me handle my dogs. I was trained at the local Humane Society and it is invaluable. So. when is a device like this something to consider? I have clients who are not always like I am with dogs so would this work with them etc. Thank you for your work and your videos.

Even managed to recall him mid-run towards another dog. Not sure how to correct him off-leash when he runs away without an ecollar..... most of the it's so low he doesnt even bother f.e. when chewing on a stick or something. that's how low i have it set. But yeah... can't keep using this great tool for training my amstaff.

But now she older I just walk her on a lead I live in UK and their is no private parks for dogs near me . Just your standard park . And she loves other dogs and people and kids. But when she was 11months old I let her of she was playing with another dog. Then she saw another dog across the field she run to the other dog. And I used a whistle at the time. She was just ignoring me and run out the park so I've lost my confidence and scared she might get hurt or course an accident . I've looked on FB husky page and everyone says u really can't trust a husky or malamute is this true would love your feed back Julie from UK

Question! When we use the e-collar, we give stimulation at the same time as the command. When using the prong collar for correction, the correction comes after the dog doesn't follow the command. So, when using the e-collar for correction/punishment, do you give the higher stimulation with the command, like usual, or after the command like with the prong? Your videos have been a life saver with my 2y/o GSD rescue- he's been with us 2 months and is now a completely different dog. We use the mini educator and it's been fabulous for him, but I've been hesitant to use it to correct him because I don't want to confuse him with my verbal command and stimulation being out of sync.
@1horseToomany
4 жыл бұрын
With the ecollar, you would correct right after the dog chooses to ignore you at a higher stim. Not in the same moment or you would be associating the word "come" with a punisher which would confuse the dog. You ONLY use the stim as a higher correction once the dog is reliable to the word "come" and understands it fully. When you are teaching "come", it is completely different pressure & release at a very low level. The high stim punisher is only if they blow you off AFTER they are 100% clear what "come" means. I hope that helps.

I rescued an English Pointer who had not been pff leash as he couldn't be caught. Where I walk there is masses of Downland with only a small road along the top. When the dog wouldn't come I just got in the car and drove along the road to the very end, when he caught up with me he was only to pleased to get in the car. Walking after I would call him to me and just give him a treat, not catching him. Only once after the first incident did he play the 'catch me if you can' game. I got in the car but before I could start the engine he was stood at the front with his front legs on the bonnet (hood). After that he has 100% recall, no treats at all.

It be really educational to just se what numbers you use and exactly when in your everyday training. No need to talk much but more of a demonstration of a regular session with Dakota or something. Loving all of the videos!

Once again a great video. I now feel more confident in the e-collar. Always been a little afraid to use it. Will start again. Thanks Scott

I was just thinking about an ecollar. Good timing! I refuse to give up the off leash dream with my Siberian Husky.

My dog is pretty good but every once in awhile gets an attitude and he gets leashed and put in the truck. that's his punishment. he no longer has the 3 acre field to run in and he figured it out pretty quick but every once in awhile tests me. lol I agree the invisible fence isn't good. If they get through they won't come back and we don't want that.

This is helpful. Any thoughts on people with dexterity issues or fine motor issues at times or all the time to give feedback on how to get used to it? Especially when outside and fumble but also inside.

Do you train other options than e-collar for recall? This is the 2nd video I’ve watched where you only use the e-collar.

do you recommend training to come when called with the e collar first before watching this video. She won't come when she's called outside but will inside
