Might want to consider getting some quick start spray to help it start easier next time. Also, be sure to drain oil and fuel (otherwise the gas may solidify in your carburetor and/or foul your spark plug). You can't just put it in a shed until next time. Also, I really advise in having an extra spark plug on standby--speaking from experience. I hope things improve quickly for you Texans!! Also, you should secure it with a heavy chain too.

Switch all your interior lights to LED and they will draw very low amps and that will leave more power available from the generator for things in the house that draw a lot of power.

GardenFork - Outstanding video and very simple to understand. You did a great job of explaining the basic concept of how a generator interlock works. It's amazing how many people have never heard of this option. I did the same type of set up, only a lot more beefy. I used a Generac 50 Amp power inlet box and a Generac 50 Amp heavy duty cable with (of course) a double pole 50 amp breaker. My generator is a DuroMax XP12000EH. The maximum rating for my set up is a whopping 12,500 watts, so I should be very well prepared when....not if.....but when the power does go out.

I just bought a Duro max XP12000EH DUAL FUEL Gen & initially had some problem starting it. No way no how! ( I did follow the instructions on the manual & on the gen!) Then I went on line to check the comments on the reviews & resolved the problem. The manual & on the gen said, for propane move the choke to the right! I move it to the right but back it up about 1/4 & Bingo! ( By the way, there was no problem w/ gas). I bought this unit a few days ago & there had been some updates in references to the regulator for the propane. I found some discrepancies & some wrong information that I will like to share! They replaced the old regulator ( there were too many complaints. The old one have a button. The new one didn't have the buttom. The instructions said press the buttom! Troubleshooting only deals w/ issues w/gas. No mention of propane! Manual recommended using " F6RTC PLUG! MINE CAME W/ F7TC ? Anyone have an answer to that? ps: Ur instructions & installation r on the money!

Great video! You explain the reasons and purpose of having the interlock and how it works. I am fortunate to already have a sub panel so I'm going to move circuits around so all the ones I need to run on the generator are in the sub panel, and then install a transfer switch between the main panel and sub panel. I already did this at my daughters house and it worked out great! Thanks again for doing it right! ( I was an electrician for many years so I sort of have inside information to do it!)

Nice clean install. Most of our small home generators have a two pole 30 amp outlet so that's what you need to feed the house power with. If you have a bigger generator then size accordingly with the breaker you install. Forget the 240volt breaker designation (it's actually just a 2 pole breaker and the voltage is dependent of the power company). Buy one that matches the required breakers for your panel( usually a sticker inside the cover with the breaker model). The breaker itself may be rated for much higher voltage than 240. Now simply turn off the main breaker and turn on the newly installed breaker that's fed from the generator. Reverse order to go back to line power. Definitely run the generator dry to protect the carburetor. Mine is ten years old and still starts on the first pull. I do have a transfer switch for protection but it's not necessary as long as the main breaker is locked off. Now that I'm a senior I replaced my generator with a generac 22kw propane generator with a five hundred gallon propane tank to feed it. Now it starts and runs without me touching a thing or having to go out before bed to fuel the old generator, so it'd run all night to power the small window ac in my bedroom. A necessity for summer power outages.

I have used this interlock system for 3 outages so far. Simple to install, I did it myself. I moved the generator breaker up under the main breaker, moved the two 120 v breakers to where the generator breaker was. That breaker was installed by the electrician when we built the house. The heavy duty plastic interlock device is designed to mate with various service panel manufacturer’s product. They are made for all common breaker panels. Cost is about $20. Instructions provided. The cost of a transfer switch professionally installed alone will approach the cost of the home 5000-7000 watt generator. Labor will probably be about 2-3 hours for the electrician who will estimate a half day minimum.h. Or maybe more !!!!!!! Good luck JoeB

I agree, the interlock is a much better option then a transfer switch. With it I can choose what circuits I want to power. Living in FL I run a Generac 12500 / 18500 portable generator to power the whole house during a storm outages, but I can change and reduce loads to allow us to run central AC, hot water heater, kitchen stove , and or clothes dryer. Consider propane. Pain to set up but much less fuss then gasoline and your carburetor on the generator will never gum up with ethanol from today's gasoline.

It's cheaper than a transfer switch, but what would make you think it's better? A transfer switch has the benefit of being able to work with both 120v and 240v generators. This would require 240v to power both sides of the panel.

This would be a better set up rather than running extension cords. Just wonder what wires would one need to run from the breaker box to the outlet? Any attempt to put a hole in the wall from inside the house to outside the house to run the hard wires where the outlet would be would invite critters.

@@janetholmes9685 I mean I ran 8/3, but I think 10/3 is fine for 30amp, 8/3 can do 50 (i have a 30 right now cause of generator size, but I put in 8/3 in case I ever want a bigger generator to run AC and stuff, but i got a free generator so). Also if you don't go directly into the box like his, any part that's outdoors needs to be in tubing, protection. I run mine to my garage, but near entrace because we run the generator outside the garage and run the cable inside, also it keeps the generator under our generous overhang to keep water away, also you're not supposed to run generator in the rain, so I can leave my garage open and run it towards the end (i know you're not supposed to, but rather run it at end of garage with door open (driveway slows away from garage so I can do that, my dad can't cause it slops into garage and he'd have a flood) and have power than not). They make something like putty (my central AC, natural gas lines all use it) that you form around any wires going outside and plugs up any holes.

I just put an interlock in, for my panel it was $65 for interlock. 8/3 cable 80 feet with 30 amp double pole breaker was 130. Inletbox was 36. I had staples (to move 4 wires to my sub panel from main panel) and 8/3 circle hangers. I had 1/2 tubing for the part exposed. 30 for the cord from generator to inlet box (i used to run a suicide cable from gen to dryer plug, decided to go legit). So with tax about 300 for just materials. But I needed 80 feet to go to side of house I want generator on, so without wire you looking at around 130-150 for materials. Also 30amp and below you only need 10/3 wire which is cheaper. I didn't hire an eletrician because I'm comfortable doing it, i am the one who installed sub panel (old house very small panel and original owners had every slot with a double breaker already, had to install sub panel to put in central air and dryer, they had an apartment dryer that was tiny), inspected and everything passed.

Good job on this demonstration! Also, it is a great idea for one to purchase 'PowerBack' Model THP108 by Reliance Controls so one will know when the Utility Power comes back on if they go with the Interlock Switch. This way if your main panel is inside your house, you don't have to look for lights to come on at a neighbor's house or wait for some form of notification (Text, Phone Call) from your utility company to know that the main power has been restored. The Interlock Switch in my opinion is the better way to go than installing a limited number of circuit breakers using a Transfer Switch!

You still have your generator tied to the system neutral supplied by the utility company this way which is still a back feed situation. If you have a problem with your service due to a storm this presents a dangerous situation trying to reconnect service to the company circuit. I saw a lineman fall off a pole in Okla City when he tried to reconnect the service neutral while the generator was running even with the house meter pulled. Man did the sparks fly.

@@MeltingRubberZ28 ground bar is connected to the water pipe and a ground rod. these days the ground bar is connected to 2 ground rods 6 feet apart. if you do not ground the generator and seperate the neutral from the field circuit, you have a potential safety hazard. even if you have everything grounded, a neutral can back feed. Its not the generator that is dangerous, its the generator back feeding thru a load side out the line side of a transformer that is. you have to completely isolate the line side circuit. and yes that's what this all about. something that goes wrong in the wiring. 1st rule of electricity. it's unpredictable.

Best way is to mount a second breaker box inside. Install a outlet by fridge and freezer or other places. Run cable to each outlet from second panel. Run proper extension cord to second panel. Power goes out move plugs from fridge or whatever to secondary outlet. Start generator. Too easy. Paint secondary outlets so people know they are generator fed. No dangers. no interlock to prevent backflow into power line needed.

My service panel was nearly full so I installed a second panel - fed by a 60A double pole breaker in the first panel - and I moved all of the essential circuits to the second panel. The main breaker in the second panel and the generator breaker are interlocked. Since the interlock isolates the second panel from the first, preventing backfeed to the first and thus the power grid, I can leave the breakers in the first panel turned on; when the power comes back on then the things powered by the first panel will come back on. I typically only run that generator when we need heat or running water (well pump). For the longer term stuff - like keeping food cold or frozen - I use a small inverter generator with extension cords; way less fuel and way less noise.

Does that interlock switch use the uritilty neutral? If so, the neutral is still powered when using your generator. Depending on how the utility street transformer is constructed, the neutral may power the grid lines with thousands of volts.

Great video, as a 35yr electrician the only problem I see is that back feed outlet outside needs to have a weatherproof cover that allows you to close the cover when you have something plugged in. They are required by The National Electrical code. Otherwise kudos on the video!!

When I disconnected the power from my old house I still had to keep power for my water pump and sheds. I ended up moving my utility connection to a front shed which is directly beside the utility pole. I also connected a 100 amp manual transfer switch. I didn't wire a plug though. The transfer switch is on the outside of the shed where the generator will be. I instead cut the female plug off the generator cord and wired it directly into the transfer switch. Now I just plug the cord in and start the generator. Does any of that sound wrong? I appreciate any information.

@Clinton A It's been that way for years and i've used it multiple times. No problems yet. I was just curious about connecting the cord directly to the breaker instead of using a plug.

Well, I'd run conduit from yor panel to your generator plug. Make sure to use rigid conduit for the piece that will go through exterior wall. This will require a junction box or a mogul lb to go from regular conduit to rigid. If panel near exterior wall and everything exposed this should not take longer than 2 hours. Material would run you 50-100$ depending on distance. So if done properly and not just hanging extension cord you're looking at 300-500$ job of course if you got thick walls and finished basement and it takes 3-5 hours to finish easily 500-750$ job. Prices vary greatly from area to area.

I wish someone could speak to the fact that the neutral coming from the powerline is not disconnected when in generator mode. Is it not possible to feed power back somehow through the neutral? I believe a transfer switch disconnects all lines from the main powerline including the neutral. Great video thanks for posting

I like simple ways of doing things... I'm on the desert near 29 Palms, Ca. My computer says it will be 114 today (Sept. 4. 2019). There's a good chance the power will go off because of some equipment failure (I've lived here 43 years --so I know what to expect). I have a Honda inverter generator that's able to run one small through the wall A/C, my refrigerator, and a small freezer. I simply drilled a hole through the kitchen wall, inserted a power cable, use extension cords, and I'm good to go. It's not very elegant, but it suits my simple brain and does the job.

few things from having this same setup. hookup the whole generator before you go in the basement to the panel. there's no reason to go down twice. you most likely dont need to turn off all the breakers, the only thing I need to turn off in my house is my hottub that comes on automatically. it is true that we cant run the microwave, dryer, and other big things at once but we just know that and dont use them all at once. but by leaving the breakers on we can selectively use anything in the house.
@billjones5178

Well it would be so easy for both refrigerators, the freezer, the water heater, the Ac , the attic fan, the home security system to all power up automatically at the same time, if u don’t shut those breakers of, and the wife or jr. May start the washer, dryer, toaster, tv, computer, or garage door opener because he was not home when u turned the generator on. And heaven forbid if daughter flushes and my 230v well pump kicks on. So for us I turn off all breakers, and have a red ball sticker on those I will leave on, so I don’t have to rethink this a year later during a power outage. Most important to us is internet for informing power company and news. One Tv not 3. Refrigerator, and allow freezer to power up on occasion I choose. A couple lights. Don’t forget plenty of gas for generator. Any devices that have remote control continue to draw power in off position, waiting to receive signal, TVs , sound systems, remote lights, outdoor security lights, tree lights and sump pumps, dehumidifier, all take stand by power, that will load a small generator.down, shut them off with breakers Worth mentioning is, I use the generator that is in my RV as my back up power source!

I'm in Texas and did all this about three months ago and boy was I glad I did, I was a hero for three days with no grid power. Why did you only use a 20 amp breaker? I installed a 60 amp breaker in my panel as my unit puts out at least 50 amps or more. I wanted it to be future proof if I decide to get a larger genset in the future.

Everything looks good, except for the storm part: you gotta have a rainproof enclosure for the generator, otherwise you'll be in trouble, electricity and water don't mix well, you said it, right? Also, the receptacle outside in which you'll plug the generator should be pointing downward for the same reason. When you have a bad storm or a hurricane (like sometimes we do here in South Florida) the rain comes at you at almost any angle . There are receptacle models that are built pointing downward.

Good tip. Also, it may not be rain, it might be 3 feet of snow or a thunderstorm with hail. Plus, you don't want to be adding fuel to the gen (or trying to fix it) while exposed to the elements.

Do you need a special type of breaker to power the electrical panel from the generator? Or will an regular 240v breaker work if wired correctly?

A fine explanation of the whole process. I'm thinking of how many people don't know the installation safety concerns to consider in using a portable generator. I suppose lots of folk are shoe-making the process and might get a surprise in the end.

Connect your essential supplies- lighting, fridge, freezer- to a dedicated breaker board with a changeover switch fed from the main board or generator, then there is only one switch to operate after starting the generator- simple, no interlocks to worry about and no risk of overloading.

At $52, that is some expensive sheet metal for the interlock! But it is a great idea and much less expensive than a transfer panel (which is likely more like $500). And not having to rewire the breakers is a real plus. This is the first time seeing the interlock. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
