I have a motorcycle helmet to use with my electric unicycle and it's two years old. I am not a fan of wearing helmets, so to force myself in the beginning, I imagined myself to be some character that needed a helmet, like an astronaut or a mandalorian 😆 My friends played along in this “game”, so it ends up being fun AND safe.

I used to think that cycle helmets were a little bit pathetic. Having worn motorcycle helmets for years when using my motorbike I couldn't believe these cheap 'egg cartons' would protect much and like so many people I pooh-poohed them. Still I did use a cheap Bell helmet when on my bicycle. Then 15 months ago I feel off my bike and in the process I broke my arm. It could have been far worse as when a very kind passer-by helped me up off the road she commented that looking at the state of my helmet it was lucky I was wearing one. When I came home from hospital I looked at my helmet and understood what she meant. The outside was destroyed and the inner shell was cracked and broken. To think this would have been my head was unimaginable. I wouldn't go on a bike without one now. Please use one. It worth pointing out that after telling Bell my story they gave me a 40% discount off a new helmet which was used with much appreciation.

@@Electroheads I watch with interest your posts but I was wondering if you've ever thought about featuring 'self-build' e-bikes. I converted my 1990's Marin into a brilliant machine using Bafang parts bought from Amazon. A more wallet friendly alternative to the machines you show. I think I spent about £700 on the Bafang parts and I then spent a few hundred pounds on new tyres, drive chain bits, breaks etc. Goes like a rocket. By the way this wasn't why I fell off, I was crossing the road and hit the kerb! Nothing to do with it being electric just not looking where I was going! If you want to see a photo of my machine give me an email address and I'll happily send you one.

I'm really not a fan of compulsory helmet use on bicycles, whilst I know that in the event of my head hitting the ground in a cycling accident a helmet will reduce my chances of serious head injury, I also know that in *mumble, mumble* years of cycling I've never hit my head. And I look to the Australian experience where the introduction of mandatory helmet use saw a dramatic reduction in cycling and think anything we can do to increase bike use should be encouraged. As for expiry dates on helmets, whilst it might not degrade as quickly if its stored in the cool, dark backroom of a cycle shop surely it will still start the process? I've a feeling the reason helmets don't have an expiry date is more to do with manufacturers and retailers not wanting customers to know how long the helmet you're buying has been sitting on the shelf.

When you say 4 helmets failed, how did they fail? On a cycling forum I told the story that I was out with a friend greenlaning on motorcycles we came across two cyclists at the bottom of a hill. One had come off and the inner of his helmet had split in to 3 pieces. His friend said it had cost £70. I said on the forum that I thought the £70 helmet didn't seem to be better than a £6 one. I was told the £70 helmet was designed to split apart as part of its impact absorption.

However, as I'm planning to combine micromobility with motorcycling I recently upgraded to Cratoni Vigor. I had to "import" it from Germany as it's not available in the UK. @@NaeMuckle Nah, that's just bullshit and you know it. Of course you could fall over pulling your socks on and bang your head. But if you come off your bike at 15mph / 25kmh for any reason and your head hits a hard surface then you were involved in an activity on a self propelled vehicle that greatly increases your risk of being involved in an accident that could cause injury. And your head is your most vulnerable area. You can choose not to, but your just evading the issue. Wearing a helmet is a very minor inconvenience. If you just don't like being told what to do by other people and you are happy to accept the greater risk of not wearing a helmet then off you go. It's your choice knowing the potential consequences of hitting your head off a hard surface with or without a helmet. It's like using a good quality bike lock. It's not a guarantee that your bike won't be stolen but it will reduce the probability that it will be.

@@tconnolly9820 it's not at all bullshit. The statistics are in from countries that make wearing a helmet mandatory and you're at more risk wearing one. If you're wanting to put it down to the data that's been researched then it shows you have an irrational fear of the risk of riding a bike.

The Wednesday before Christmas, I needed my helmet. I wasn't watching and ran into a stationary rider (who'd stopped to take his wind vest off, just over the brow of a a hill, standing on the road, with his back to me). I wasn't looking up very carefully, I think I was trying hard to get back to the group that'd just dropped me. I was knocked out for 3 minutes, concussed, and spent a day in hospital being scanned & assessed and it was only because my wife is a Dr. that they let me go home that evening. I have no memory of the 2-3 mins prior to the crash, and only patchy memories of about 3-4 hours afterwards (hospitals are very boring places). That helmet is now a hanging basket outside my workshop window, one of the few useful things a dented helmet is good for. MIPS is good as it reduces possible tearing of the spinal cord as your head rotates as it skids along the road.

Two years for me, but my understanding is that a bicycle helmet only needs to be retired if it has had structural damage from a fall or accident. The manufacturer recommendations sound suspect. The leader of a British study on helmet safety recommended (probably tongue-in-cheek) not to wear a helmet. The study discovered that motorists drive much closer to cyclists wearing helmets, but keep their distance when cyclists don't have helmets. PS. An episode on helmet tech would be interesting. The one I use has an inner and outer helmet, after a study found that helmets often cause wrenched necks in accidents. The outer shell can twist while the inner part remains solidly on my bean. If You have B car licence - After pass CBT You can ride 49cc/28MPH/4kW moped unlimited time with no L plate or 125cc motorcycle with L plate until CBT expire. Mopeds are NOT 125cc motorcycles. A helmet is only standardised to 12mph. They don't protect anything other than the head. You are more likely to die from injuries to other organs. Drivers seem to take more risks around cyclists because they see helmets as a safety feature. Infrastructure is far more important. I wear a helmet off road, and on road in winter but in summer I just wear a cap. I don't want to boil my brain in a polystyrene box. I do about 10k miles per year and I have never had an issue. I DO wear a good one on a moped or motorcycle though. We're only required to wear a helmet on those speed pedelec things that do 45 kph.... And quite soon, you're required to wear a helmet on a 25 kph moped too. To be honest, I even rode my 25 kph moped without a helmet despite the thing having an 80cc engine on it and tended to do 85 kph (which I usually did). And I'm probably not alone. So that probably is quite a good idea.... But it startled me when I saw statistics of children with severe head injuries after falling off bikes. It seemed to happen way more than I thought. So perhaps, all these other countries have a point..

The best protection for your head is don;'t crash. How many times in your young life have you crashed? In my 50+ years of cycling my score is 3 with 2 slow fall offs. In none of these did my head get hit. A study done years ago found that wearing a helmet increased your risk of being knocked off because drivers took less care because "its ok they're wearing a helmet". If I ever start racing then i would wear one because that is a much higher risk environment. Why don't pedestrians wear helmets? Their exposure to head injury is just as great when in collision with a vehicle.

What a confusing item for bike riding safety. WEAR a helmet ! Don't ever think about wearing one, just wear it ! Head injuries are not cool ! You don't know what happened inside your head till it's to late.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) ~= Styrofoam. Just like the packaging material.

I wear a Bee Keepers white helmet with a beeping red light on the back (when I want it) and a front 5 led white lights on the front of the helmet (when I want it on) that is! I do have a chin strap for it,by the way. My helmet is 1 of a kind and it makes me awesome in my Vegas along with my tricked out Escooter and other gear.= I'm simply the BESTTTT!!-Anna May Bullock/Tina Turner! "I know too much!" The RAPTURE might be coming soon England!

Another safety point my friends...so many people only use front lights to see ahead. They are vital if you are overtaken by a long vehicle so they can see you in their mirror as they pass.👍😅

All perfectly fair safety points but we only find out that this channel is collaborating with a helmet brand at the end of the video. With the unbelievable prices of some helmets I think it's fair to suggest that we carefully check our headgear every time we put it on, make sure it's done up and correctly fits and that we ride responsibly. No way can I change mine every few years just because a manufacturer says I should. If they're patently not confident in their product to guarantee its safety for more than a couple of years I ain't buying it anyway. (I don't use "hair products" so no internal damage likely unless the random whirring of my brain overheats it!) Stay safe out there people but equally don't throw good money after bad, cycling is supposed to be an inexpensive form of transport yet we seem to find more ways to throw money at it. Just a bit of common sense is required...talking of which you *have* reminded me to check mine. The last thing I did before having to stop for the cold weather was topple over and give my head a bang...I am old and disabled so my ev is my Stealth Mobility Vehicle and riding in the cold is not an option. Due to that disability I sometimes choose the wrong words and I have amended my comment as a consequence and by request. Thanks Eilis, good article but I would have preferred the collaboration to be mentioned in the opening frames. 👍 To confirm: comment edited as requested guys. As you can see I stand by the principle of my remarks, which in no way discourage people from using a bicycle helmet or from enjoying your channel as much as I do, but it has to be remembered that not everyone can afford to buy new equipment without good reason. Safety is paramount but so is financial responsibility and as someone who worked in sales for years I felt you didn't really acknowledge that the manufacturers recommendations get a bit close to promotion of their product. I'm sorry that my original badly worded comment upset you but that was not the intention. However as someone involved in advertising products for some years I would argue that advertising is what it seemed like to me. God bless you for encouraging people to be safe but please...be aware of "manufacturer suggestions" or whatever the wording was. As for your helpful suggestion at the end, if you had suggested those looking for a new helmet should look at your website that would have been enough, but you promoted a specific product or brand which is what I took issue with. Hope I've been clearer with this healthy criticism and that we can still be friends. 👍

Hey Jude ;) That's quite a serious claim! Throwing around accusations like that can be harmful (not only to our brand, but also to people who might now think twice about the veracity of our video, and whether they do, in fact, need a helmet). Let us categorically tell you - this video was not sponsored by any brand, it was made of our own volition. We'd encourage you to edit your comment in light of this. 👍

Agree helmets are important, but the message and the shift in focus that their mandated use creates in our perception of road safety and how it can be improved is not welcome. Essentially helmets and protection worn by riders should not be a substitute for safer separated bike infrastructure provided on public roads by government departments of transport and infrastructure. kzitem.info/news/bejne/056wrmqjfqJ6o6g

Might be worth doing another video on why helmets aren't mandatory for cyclists/micro-mobility users. Be ready for some mad comments though. I don't wear one anymore. Helmets might reduce the risk of head injury but they affect the 'image' of cycling to the point that lots of people are put off riding, so miss out on the health benefits (which massively outweigh the risk of injury). So... it's complicated 😂

A really great point that I hadn't quite thought about when making this video. The topic of helmets isn't definitely divisive!

@@Electroheads Yeah it's mad, but makes sense once explained. Take a look at the 'Should you wear a bike helmet' video by The Guardian on KZitem. Really good.
