One point I'd like to make, and it deserves attention, your basment is a conditiond space year round, heated in the winter and cooled in the summer, what items in your shed/ garage workshop need to be kept at a livable temperature year round? The paints calks glue finishes can all go in the basment, then all you have in the shop is tools, nothing thats going to require heat or ac temperature year round. It cost money to heat the shop, you either buy the wood to burn or cut down the trees using gasoline then split it. Your not going to be using any of it today. Untill you do you can store it. Just bring up what you need as you need it. This leaves more room for tools, sanding disks and consumable items. Something to think about and you wont have to keep the garage/shed shop warm.

Guys have been doing this for years Baby food jars screw the lid to the cabnit bottom over a 2x3 or 2x4 and fill the jar with nuts bolts screws ex unscrew it when you need it use a few then put the jar back. You can use peanut butter jars pickel jars what ever, large almost quart size placenta sauce jars make good scoops with handel and all just cut out the bottom, fruit and pudding cups are great to put glue in insted of using it from the gallon jug, lays stack potato chip tubes lids fit some of the fruit cups perfectly and can be used to keep the wood glue in overnight. You have a lot of dead space you could install French clets to hold tools . You can also make a bench over the roll out tools. Or even a flip out bench with a leg to use as an outfeed table for the saw. Lumber rack off one wall to hold rough cut lumber. And a plywood/sheet good cart.

I used to be in manufacturing and have gone through some lean course (5S is part of lean). The hardest part of 5S is sustain. It's easy to get motivated and start the program - sorting, shining, etc. - but once that is done, keeping it going is the part where it often goes astray. "I'll put that away tomorrow" or "We'll clean it all up this weekend" creeps in and before you know it, you are back to where you were before 5S. You have to allow yourself the time to stay neat and organized. I now own a small sewer and drain business and I subcontract for many plumbers. I do some specialty stuff and have more tools than a lot of them. They see my van and are really wowed by the organization. I've had guys take pictures and tell me they are going to copy it. And I still need to do more organization. The van I have now was already decked out with shelves when I bought it so that's what I worked with. I'm planning on a new van in the near future and it will be a clean sheet build-out to be as organized as possible. More organized = faster work = more money.

Gotta love Doug the super-organized neighbor. My shop/garage is often a mess, generally because I have too many in-work projects at the same time. For me, step one is to get those projects completed, because until I do that, nothing I might try is going to stick. The "how often or how soon will you need this" metric and the "place for everything, everything in its place" metric are spot on. They are the perfect starting place for organizing anything.

I yelled out my window, no Doug showed up. I threw out a lot of garbage in the garage last weekend. It started as "This would be good for a project someday" As I looked through my garage I realized I was never going to work on those projects. The items moved from the project supplies category to the garbage category. I still have more to clean but it's looking better already.

@@HometownAcres Really don't want to be like that anymore! Lol . I built my house 42 years ago, only had a 2ft carpenters square, a power saw, framing hammer, and a 4 ft aluminum level. Now, at 68 I have enough specialty tools to make anything! (Which I have!) Just don't want to throw them away, but the grandkids have no interest in them! And most have no idea what they're for.

for those oil products, get a metal cabinet, because if any of those oil containers leak or have residue on their surface after use, they are going to stain that wooden cabinet and you will get a oil smell permanently in the cabinet. One other tip with a reel extension cord, hang another on by the door, but with a 100ft length, soyou have a second one inside the garage, but also one that can reach quite a ways out of it.

Adam, I wanted to personally thank you for making this post. Between my woodworking shop, garage, and attic you have finally taught me what it takes to get it all organized. I was caught in the conundrum of looking at for example my cans of polishing compound, buffing wheels etc taking up prime space in my garage shelving although I don't even use those annually. WIth the organizational method you described, yearly, monthly, daily I can now set forth on an organizational plan that will idealize my shop. I love your channel. I'm working on cleaning, sorting and organizing my elaborate woodworking shop getting it camera ready. I keep my funnels in a 5 gallon bucket so they are not constantly dripping on everything until they dry. Measuring cups for fuel mix, short lengths of fuel line, clamps, tin can for a small catch basin, filter wrench, all found their home in the bucket as well.Put a lid on the bucket and keep out the dust and keep in the smell as well as providing a seat while your waiting for the oil to drain. 5S is used by Boeing so there must be some merit to the system.

Always fun to watch garage greatness. I might add a few things if I can. If you have a small ziplock slide it over the tip of the grease gun and secure it with a clamp type paper clip. It will save you floor. I wondered if you couldn’t add some kind of LED task lighting to the bottoms of you cabinets? Thant would go along way to brighten up the areas below the cabinets. Most big box lumber stores or Ace hardware stores carry a Velcro product called Wrap-It. They come in varying width’s & lengths. I would gather up the slack in the power cord of the ceiling mounted cord reel. There is a nice sized grommet at one end you use with screw in type cup hook or larger hook. See you in the next installment.

10:55 "hell yeah" . In my smaller 2 car garage shop I have now about 100,000lm (not a joke) of mainly 5-6000k lighting overhead and under shelving. It makes working late at night like daytime. Also bright light does a lot for the physiology and not feeling tired or worn. I work 98% of the time after the kids fall asleep so not my most energetic time. It's been cool watching the build of this. Been following you for a while now since meeting neighbor Doug. Your framing nails, and other may serve best on the bottom drawer vs prime eye level cabinets? I have over a dozen Vevor products now, and they are solid value and mostly great quality. Above average IMO. WORKPRO included..I've been incredibly impressed with the quality and diversity there.

I mounted my large power tools on casters years ago when I didn’t have much room in my garage. Make sure you have your heavy power tools on a well stabilized casters / carts / mobile skids. A heavy tool MUST have a wide stable mobile base. Personal experience; I had a tall cars iron table saw on a unstable base. Moving the saw, it caught a electric cord and it flipped over instantly. Amazingly I was uninsured, no major damage to the saw. If I had been pulling towards me major injury. I’m making a new expanded stable base.

I love what Doug suggested with the shelves in the first cabinet. Most of us would overlook that. I really like the timeframes for use of items and how they're stored depending on those times. That's all part of the sort/set-in-order. I'm really surprised Doug, of all people, didn't mention the 6th S - Safety. That's especially important in the shop. One of the things I noticed right away as you were hanging things on the walls was the roller stands and clamps right above and around that window. I would consider moving those or covering that window with a sheet of plastic/plexiglass so you don't put a clamp or stand through it when you're tired and hanging things up at the end of the day.

Bright idea with the LED lamps. I bought a bunch of used 4' Florent fixtures with the bulbs the guy had hung them on the celing unscrewed the bulbs put in a screw in outlet and added power strips that way I could hang them where I needed light staple to wires to the celing And turn every light on at the wall switch. Belive it or not it meets code. Its temporary lights. When the bulbs burn out ill buy led tubes to replace them.

Your next upgrade to the shop is needing to be replaced with led shop lights. I recommend that you have outlets put in where your existing electric box on the cieling is that way you can plug the new lights in easily and replace them just as fast if they do go bad. I did this in my shop and it was a huge difference in lighting and old florescent lights wasn't efficient, didnt produce good lighting and the ballast issues the florescent had was eliminated by installing the new led shop lights. You can even plug many models together to get more opinions in spacing

We had a lean manufacturing consultant come in at a former job and did a version of the Japanese system or Six-sigma or whatever branding he called it. Top management only pretended to be supportive though so it never got fully implemented. They spent the big money on the consulting fees and training sessions but not on the physical materials to put things in place.
