Many years ago, .007 was my standard. I even tried .006 or .0065, Id ont' remember exactly. To me, anything above 8 was strangely thick, and I didn't get why anyone woudl use them. Over the decades, I have tried and experimented with everythign up to .013. My conclusion is: The thinner, the better sound. Thicker strings muffle your sound. However, the really thin ones did break quicker. To me, thicker string are only for down-tuning...

Billy Gibbons once was with B.B. King backstage and B.B. picked up Billy's guitar and said what you got on there? Billy said .10's or .11's and B.B. said man why you workin' so hard? And B.B. sold him on .08's and .07's Been using light gauge since. does make them bluesy bends a lot easier.

You have a wonderful attitude and I am certain you are positive influence on everyone in your life - but I was impressed by your playing. You sound more musical than the player you are imitating. The part that most impresses me is when you play slowly - and truly improvise. I am not impressed by the speed of any player but the emotional power and potency framed by their imagination. To me music is like speaking - and the most powerful speech is not about complex sentence structure, high level vocabulary - or the speed of words - but the meaning. Unfortunately most modern players as so caught up in speed alone that improvisation takes place as the manipulation of muscle memory patters instead of at the deep level of formation of exotic phrases where each note counts. I heard you play a few notes that really grabbed me - and that's what I liked most - but hats off to your fantastic skill at fast playing. Try playing in 5/4 time or 7/4 time - and use some exotic scales like the Gypsy, Japanese, and diminished - and flow in and out of the pentonic minor. Remember that if you really want to sound unique - practice your favorite scale and omit one note to form a collection of scales that each have a unique flavor that are all interchangeable. Now pick your favorite one and omit another note to form 5 tone scales out of your favorite. Find which one of these is your favorite and reduce that to a collection of sub-scales that each have four notes - and now the point - play each four note scale in every possible sequence to master unusual patterns that you would never play when rushing around. Now go back to your main scale and enjoy the rich stratification of new possibilities that were all hidden in that first seven tone scale. My basic approach is to take any exotic scale and remove the 2nd and 6th note - forming a westernized pentonic version. For example the regular pentonic minor is a subset of the phyrgian, aeolian, and dorian mode. The pentonic version of the Gypsy mode is 1-minor3rd-augmented 4th-perfect fifth- Major 7th. Music is infinite. Yngwie has picked the Harmonic minor as his focus of mastery. You pick something that no one else does and show the world that there are none like you either. Live long and prosper. Best wishes, Kenly.

Johnny Anderson: I also use light gauges. The problem is the high E (7 gauge) mostly slips outside of the ( my scalloped DIY) fingerboard. The pull up and bending is extremely sweet.Seem High E and B easily worn out. I can see some fret marks on the string .Maybe I am just a starter , tho I play with a very light touch/sliding touch. Have fun

Another great video Johnny! Never seen 7s before. I never really had a "string journey", always played with Super Slinkys since '83. I did switch to Dean Markley for a bit in the 90s, but they were way too bright for me. Went back to Ernie's cuz I liked how they lost the new string feeling (which I hate) very quickly. The biggest Yngwie sound I hear in the 7s is when you do those bends-into-vibratos - the signature Yngwie vibrato. I wonder if the "bendiness" of 7s contributes to that aggressive vibrato he does.

I was looking for reviews on these strings because I wanted something that would be easy for my 8-year-old grandson to start out with. I have run Gibson Brite wires .009-.046 for years and simply love how they sound with a set of vintage P-90s in my Gold Top. I have a Strat mini with .010s on it, and he said he is struggling to finger the strings with his tiny digits, so it looks like the Reverand Willy's are going to be the cure to get the little guy jammin' with his pappy. Your playing is both humbling and inspirational sir, I will tell you this, for a cheaper strat that thing sounds insane and I dig the scalloped neck. Does the scalloping aid in making the neck more natural to play? I have never played a scalloped neck, and it would seem to me that if you are a light-fingered player, that it would make it easier to play and then make bending notes seem effortless. Either way, it seemed like that Axe and them strings are a match made in heaven. Thanks for the demo and heck I think I might pick up 2 sets and slap a set on my LP Studio for the S&G of it just to see how they sound through my custom hand-wound pick-ups that my brother made me they are HBs that are very bright and articulate compared to what you would typically find in a Les Paul.

Johnny, first off thanks for all the vids which are as demoralising as they are inspirational! Right now it seems impossible to play anywhere near as fast as you. But we try...may I ask a question - I found a video suggesting economy picking was the route to fast playing and I started slogging through that process. Then I found one of Paul Gilberts vids where he says he prefers to stay with simple (simple?...) alternate picking. So can I ask, at the speed you're playing, do you stay with alternate (which it looks like) or do you use economy? (in case we use different terminology, by economy I mean when you move down a string (say A to D) you always use a down stroke no matter whether your last pick was a down or an up stroke). Sorry for the long post/thanks again for all the great vids, very much appreciated.
@johnnyanderson8901

Great question. I think I mainly use alternate picking with a little bit of economy picking thrown in. I don't think it is deliberate but more reactive.

Fantastic playing as usual. Looking forward o the next case study video! Keep up the good work.
