my testimony, I tried speaking tongues before i was saved, and i manifested a demon, the tongues i spoke sounded straight out of a horror movie and i couldn't fake holy spirit tongues. I took Jesus Christ as my lord, and confronted the evil that was in me, Jesus broke its chains and set me free from it. all the anger and confusion left me and then i could speak in tongues. there is no way any one could convince me that praying in tongues is not real. ...this was a very short version of the story, but exactly what happened

Reading through the comments. Just a few thoughts. Now, I have not quite made up my mind about tongues and gifts. But it does not really matter. It's a gift it's going to happen if it's going to happen. But to the people who are "talking with God" well, not saying it does not happen. Probably had an revelation/prophecy myself. It's still playing out so not sure. But I've also had a few false religious experiences. Clearly from demonic spirits. Now what people tend to forget is that Satan often comes as an angel of light. And can be pretty convincing with it's messages, and satan can do miracles and give out gifts. So to discern them from Gods gift can be challenging. Specialy if someone tends to be a little bit self centered. Talking about experience here. Satan has been decieving people for 6000 years, so when that arrogant thought comes to your mind "nah, it's from God, I can tell" or "Yeah, I have conversations with God daily" no, you probably are not. And for the "gibberish" tongues, it's stated that only 2 or 3 talk, one at a time when there's someone to interpret it. Not a full church babbling on top of each other. And it does sound pretty demonic/pagan when same phrases are repeated and repeated. But just my two cents. Just be careful and don't let pride get to you.

The Bible says there are divers or diversities of tongues. Not just one type of tongues. One edifies the body and is equal to prophesy and then there is a prayer language or an unknown tongue that is equal to the Holy Spirit praying through you directly to God praying the perfect will of God. This happens sometimes when we don't know what to pray. It edifies the one praying in tongues.

The way the text reads is if you or someone else doesn't have interpretation, speak tongues for yourself...been Christian 38 years and like in Corinth, sometimes our flesh wants to show we speak in tongues for either group acceptance or ranking, or even boasting...that's why Paul addresses it..100% if regular Sunday service or other where non converts or people who doesn't understand the gift are present..I love speaking in tongues but in order and decency like Paul addresses..that's why we continualists can be seen as freaky, because frankly we can get Carried away with emotions and say we can't control ourselves...the spirit is subject to the prophet the Word says...the church gathering is a serious activity not a playground to do what " we feel"..again I believe the gifts are current, just that men like those apostles and the early church with that dedication to the lord and not distracted by world as we are now are hard to find.. I think that's why we "push" the anointing or fake it with loud music, lights, smoke machines, etc... none of that existed in early church.. they were the real deal no electronic help which is fake and emotion

One of my biggest struggles in studying the Bible. Is this subject, one question I have for a lot of people is when you’re reading the Bible and you read in acts 2 and they describe speaking in tongues. You also understand at that time there was language barriers between people. So when I read acts 2 I see that God gave people this miraculous ability to speak instantly in other peoples languages. That’s how I define speaking in tongues the miraculous ability to speak in another language. God did this for the purpose to spread the gospel. Because let me ask you a question. How could the gospel be spread to people that don’t speak the language . Have you ever tried ordering food from somebody that don’t even speak the language? Can you imagine trying to share the gospel with somebody that you don’t speak the language. So I see the purpose of that I just don’t understand why, or how people have turned, speaking in tongues, and that definition into their own definition i’m speaking in some sort of babel like language. Also, all the stuff you see the day you don’t see them following the rules. I see so many people in church even the pastor standing up on stage shouting out things that they call speaking in tongues that none of the church understand what they’re saying.

I was really blessed by John Wimber’s teachings regarding spiritual gifts, favoring the situational view vs. the constituted view(GOD doesn’t vest A single spiritual gift in somebody. HE gives THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHO HAS ALL THE GIFTS. When the need arises and you know you need GOD’s help to bless, heal, etc., GOD gives the gift for the moment. 1 Corinthians 11-14 focuses on when THE BODY of CHRIST gathers, so to each one the manifestation(dancing hand in Latin, phanerosis in Greek) GOD decides what HE gives each person in a meeting-not everyone needs to do the same thing every time either. GOD is not limited to that. In my personal experience, in a setting outside of church, GOD gave gifts of healings, word of knowledge, and a word of wisdom. I didn’t have the tools, but GOD gave them to me to give to the person who GOD was trying to reach.

It certainly appears that the only time we see tongues taking place 'live' in the Bible was in Acts, and they were languages. I think the burden of proof to argue they don't have to be is on the continuationists. That being said, I do have a practical observation: the only time I personally ever see tongues happen is in churches where people already believe it and want to see it. It seems that if it were as legitimate and widespread as these good gentlemen say, it would take place everywhere, even in churches that don't practice it. I've heard the "Well, the Holy Spirit is a gentlemen..." argument but that is not sensible to me. God is Almighty and does everything according to the counsel of His will. As Luther said, I must be convinced by Scripture and common sense.

I am not sure (listening @29:07') quoting Jude saying to edify self by praying in the spirit is speaking in tongues. This is why I think this. Not every believer speaks in tongues. Does that mean not all believers can pray in the spirit to edify themselves (or be edified without speaking in tongues), just tongue speaking believers?. God is no respecter of persons, and I don't think shows favoritism to tongue speaking believer vs. non tongue speaking believers. The same goes for the Romans scripture indicating the Spirit groans that cannot be "uttered" means speaking in tongues. That is reading the tongues doctrine into scripture to mean "speaking in tongues", even though it says no utterance (words). Does God not want to edify the non-tongue speaking believer as much as the tongue speaking believer? I get the sense that this boils down to the have and have not, mine is better than yours type theology. I don't understand, Paul teaches that God gave gifts so that there be no division (1 Cor 12:24), except it appears God favors tongues speaking as a method to edify a believer while non tongue speaking is left to fend for themselves and cannot be edified by the Holy Spirit?

Here's what's happening, imo: we want to pray, but don't know what to pray for. We want to say more than "your will be done", God wants us to command His will over the world, to ask Him for things, but what? So we ask God to speak through us. But if we can understand what we are saying, are we not most likely to grasp onto that and begin praying for what we think we should pray for? Easiest solution is to have the Spirit use words we don't know. "for the edification of the body" doesn't only mean "for their understanding". Is private prayer for the body not "edifying to the body" because nobody else hears it?

I spoke in tongues for 30 yrs. What Paul is saying is that the spirit speaks and we don’t understand it because the spirit is speaking in an unknown language to him. The real tongues is still out there. When someone speaks to someone by the Spirit in that persons native language. It’s not gibberish . I figured out on my own the errors of the charismatic churches. It’s crystal clear what Paul is saying if you take out what you want him to be saying.

(My comment prior to watching the video): This is one of the better arguments against the modern expression of the gift of tongues. This however is not a good argument for cessationism. Even if Pentecostals and Charismatics are wrong on this gift, the case that the Bible teaches the continuation of the spiritual gifts is far superior to cessationism. At best, this is only an argument about the nature of tongues, not the cessation of the spiritual gifts.

1. YES - I’ve seen interpreters in service regularly 2. YES - when I pray in tongues, the Lord brings to mind prayers. But when I pray in the Spirit, I also sense emotions from the Lord that aren’t mine. It’s not “weird” feeling, but I submit to it. The Lord always gives me an option to not pray in the Spirit, it’s typically not compulsory. 3. No idea why other religions might pray in tongues that sound similar, but I’ve heard demonic tongues and unless the Lord reveals to you that it’s demonic, it can be challenging for believers to discern using human knowledge only. Example: Kundalini can sound like tongues but it’s lots of hissing. 4/5 - yes, tongues is a gift, but many gifts require training to use them more adequately. Those who have a gift of teaching, do they not still apprentice themselves to a teacher for further guidance? Also, those who have seen tongues given know that it often has to be REQUESTED. It’s often prayed over someone to receive, as are the other 1 Cor 12 gifts. 6. Tongues and other spiritual gifts were assumed in early church history, as is evidenced by frequent documentation of healing, words of wisdom, etc. there has been a revival of spiritual gifts since the 1st Great Awakening, but one should not lean purely on orthodoxy to determine validity of a practice 🤷🏽♀️ Has Friel ever actually seen tongues used in practice? I’ve seen people use tongues to witness to others in foreign languages or the languages of angels.

Q If a person can be given the gift of tongues and freely open their mouth to speak it at their leisure, assuming they follow the rules... Then how is it too much to ask that the next person given the gift of interpretation can not have the same freedom to interpreting tongues literally as they fall upon their ears? I'm not shut off to tongues but I do find an unfathomable lack of interpretation accompanying its use both public and private. And pardon my scepticism but I'm not sure I trust someone to simply spiritually discern the meaning from thin air into English. Especially when there is so much "God told me..." abounding in our churches. I think the gift of interpretation of tongues is both one of the least witnessed today and also most important because it would seem to validate another gift, and one that is sooooooooooo easy for anyone to simply fake or even be deceived into faking.

That's assumes that interp works the same way as tongues. Scripturally we have nothing to explain in one direction or the OT her. Anecdotally though everyone I've seen with a gift of interp do not always get an interp or do not always understand all that is spoken. They only have a choice to listen and to share what they got. Make sense? I agree though that it is incredibly neglected and seldom valued.

@@michaelmiller5024 Thanks for the reply. I understand what you said about sometimes getting an interpretation and sometimes not. I've seen a similar thing. However I feel the importance of the following question applies here. If the Bible is asking us to not give a tongue in public if it isn't interpreted and if God does not ask us to have blind faith, then to obey the Bible in this instance means you cannot give a public tongue unless you have Confidence it Will be interpreted. Obviously that trust will be built over time by successive instances however the interpreter needs to have a high level of access to this gift or many interpreters with regular access perhaps. My point being you cannot just blurt something out and 'see how it goes.' But to still use the first gift of speech publically there must be the knowledge of a partner gift in someone else that will be activated. Thankyou for taking the time if you do follow this up.

I grew up in a “non-denominational” Pentecostal/charisnatic church. Here’s a question I struggle with speaking in tongues in a church body setting, why does God need to first have someone speak in an unknown language to then give the interpretation to someone else? Why not just give the “interpretation” as a word from God? And how do we know it was an actual interpretation vs. someone spoke in tongues out of line at the same time the Spirit was moving on someone else with a word who then believed it was an interpretation? I’ve never been in or seen any service where someone was speaking in Spanish or Russian or Swahili that they’ve never spoken before and someone who knew the language interpreted. It’s always been, and I’m sorry, a “Shaba-da-leeno-who-stole-my-Honda” sounding language. I’ve stood next to several people who just go “ba-ba-baba-da-dada-da-de” over and over and over. It’s very hard to believe in those instances that they are praying in the spirit/speaking in tongues. Help me understand those things?

There are so many things I could say here about Todd's arguments. Does he read the bible and completely ignore the book of Acts and 1 Corinthians? Does he think he knows more than the apostle Paul who was inspired by God to write about spiritual gifts? Paul's teaching on the gifts starts with him saying that he does not want the church to be ignorant about the gifts, yet Todd seems willingly ignorant. He doesn't believe that speaking in tongues edifies the speaker so he's arguing directly with Gods word. "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself" He suggests that tongue speaking could be from a spirit of false religion so he completely ignores 1 Corinthians 12:3 - "Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit." There is so much more I could say about this. It's hard to comprehend that someone who portrays himself to be knowledgeable could be so ignorant, he makes himself look foolish. It doesn't seem like he wants answers but just wants to express his own opinion.

Question, Is the ability the same as the "gift"? Prophecy is spoken in the language of the hearers and it is for the church. The same language can be spoken anytime anywhere and it's not prophecy. How can this be? Prophecy is from the Holy Spirit and it has to be in the right circumstances. When a person is baptized in the Holy Spirit often they speak in tongues. Is tongues then a gift from the Holy Spirit? Yes it is. But is it the same as the tongues gift from the Holy Spirit for the church? No, based on its use and intention. Also, a person speaking in tongues as a gift to the church could be speaking in a different language than they usually do when personally speaking to God. So, there is the ability from the Holy Spirit for personal use and the gift for the church in a meeting.

99% of the time when someone sets up to proof tongues are not for today but in each case the focus on foreign language but they neglect that there are 3 kinds of tongues spoken of in the Bible. 1. You speak a foreign language you never learned such as we see in Acts 2. 2. Tongues in a public setting where you speak in heavenly language (or could be another langue on earth) and there is someone who brings an interpretation. (yes Todd I have seen this in multiple churches) 3. A personal prayer language which is the one Paul was referring to when he said he spoke in tongues more than all of you. I am so grateful for this since there are times I don't know how to pray so I pray in the spirit. There are times in church meetings where the leaders ask everyone to pray in the spirit so while this is a public setting no interpretation is needed but that is understood in that case, but if someone brings for a message in tongues to the body as part of our meeting then that must be interpreted.

I’m a retired pastor of almost 40 years and i must admit I get tired of hearing people who don’t understand Tongues mock those who may not fully understand tongues but trust that God knows what He is doing. Below are a few explanations and responses that might help. God created tongues. If God didn’t have a purpose for tongues He wouldn’t have created them. Mocking or scoffing at tongues is mocking God’s creation. Remember it is not the gift that we receive but the Holy Spirit who uses the gifts in us as He wills. Without question God can and does use tongues as a real and known language. The question is, are tongues always and only a known language. The answer is NO. In Acts 2:13 why did these people mock the disciples if they heard them in a known language? The 120 disciples were surrounded by 3,000 or more people do you honestly think they could clearly hear the disciples speaking or maybe they heard what God wanted them to hear. There are two types of tongues the first is our personal prayer language where we pray to God and “NO man understands it” 1 Cor 14:2. The next is of the gifts of the Holy Spirit where God is speaking through an individual to a group of people where interpretation is needed 1 Cor 12:4-11. An interpretation is not needed if it is a known language. The second is where a known language would most likely be found. Why tongues is not necessarily or always a known language. 1. It says in Acts 2:11 that the people heard them in their own language it didn’t say they spoke in their own language. 2. Why would you need tongues AND interpretation if the tongues was a known language? 3. In 1 Cor 14: the word says when you’re speaking in tongues you’re speaking to God NO man understands it. Therefore in this case it’s not a known language. 4. If speaking in tongues is to benefit all that hear, then all must understand what was spoken in tongues. Then there would be no reason to speak in tongues. 5. If tongues is a heavenly language then only God can give the interpretation which is obviously the point. 6. In 1 Cor 14:6 Paul is saying when you pray in tongues and God gives you the understanding or the revelation of what was spoken in tongues you are to take that revelation or understanding and share it with others, 1 Cor 14:6 “if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?” 7. Paul makes it clear the purpose is to edify the believers by what you received while praying in tongues. 1 Cor 14:26 “How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.” 8. What’s the purpose of our personal prayer language being a known language, but not our own language, when we are privately praying to God? 9. If I’m praying to God in tongues and only God is hearing me, why pray in tongues? Why not pray in my regular language? 10. If I’m speaking mysteries in the spirit when praying to God in tongues I must not know what I’m saying and neither does anyone else for NO MAN understands it. If I’m praying mysteries then God can reveal those to me. 11. When tongues are a sign for unbelievers 1 Cor 14:22 it has a different purpose than when for a believer. The unbeliever either needs to hear it in his own language or the interpretation needs to be understood by the person. There is much more to write but this is too long already.

A couple of interesting anecdotes for those who doubt these gifts. First, my mother was saved as a teenager into an unbelieving household. She was praying and reading her bible one day when she spontaneously broke out into tongues. She said it was thrilling, but completely confusing because she had no idea what happened. She'd never heard of it. She was sharing with a girl in her high school who had also recently come to faith, and she said the same thing happened to her. Turns out it was a big move of the Spirit in that school and multiple students all received the gift simultaneously unknown to each other, and I don't think any of them had ever heard of tongues before. This is proof enough to me that it is an active gift. Second, a good friend of mine who grew up Catholic became saved after she and her husband left the church. He was saved as a child (mostly in spite of and not because of the Catholic Church) and had some experiences with charismatics although he himself never received that gift. She took his word for it that it was still an active gift. But one day while visiting a church she was struck by a pause in the worship service where someone seemed to be singing praises to God in a beautiful voice with a song she'd never heard before. She said to her husband "That was just beautiful." He said "Did you understand that?" She was shocked that he didn't. Then an interpretation came and she realized that she heard the same thing. It wasn't exactly the same words she would have used to describe it, but it was absolutely faithful to the message. So two stories of two people receiving these supposed dead gifts when they didn't know about them and were not seeking them.

There is absolutely nothing mysterious about Biblical "tongues" - and there is only one type - when referring to something spoken, they are nothing more than real, rational language(s); usually, but not always, unknown to those listening to them, but always known by the speaker(s) - it’s their native language (in some cases, it is a language the speaker has learned). In contrast, the “tongues” Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians are producing today is an entirely self-created phenomenon. It is non-cognitive non-language utterance; random free vocalization based upon a subset of the existing underlying sounds (called phonemes) of the speaker’s native language, and any other language(s) the speaker may be familiar with or have had contact with. It is, in part, typically characterized by repetitive syllables, plays on sound patterns, alliteration, assonance, and over-simplification of syllable structure. It is also interesting to note that any and all phonological rules (rules governing how sounds are put together in a given language - what is allowed and what is disallowed) governing a speaker's native language, will _also_ govern their tongues-speech. Further, this subset of phonemes mentioned above typically contains only those sounds which are easiest to produce physiologically. Occasionally some speakers will use two or more subsets of phonemes to generate glossolalia, producing what, to them, sounds like two (or more) distinct “tongues languages”, thus claiming to be able to speak in “divers tongues”. There is absolutely _nothing_ that “tongues-speakers” are producing that cannot be explained in relatively simple linguistic terms. Conversely, when it comes to something spoken, there are absolutely _no_ Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s), though it may not be the explanation you want to hear, and it may be one which is radically different from what you believe, or were taught. _Nowhere in the Bible is modern tongues-speech advocated or evidenced._ “Praying in the Spirit” does _not_ refer to the words one is saying. Rather, it refers to how one is praying. In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will. I'm not doubting or questioning the 'tongues experience'; glossolalia as the spiritual tool that it is, can be very powerful and, for many people, the experience is profound. As one commenter put it, “Speaking in tongues distracts the ego/analytical/conscious mind while leaving the subconscious (the heart) wide open to import the divine." Both the spiritual and physical benefits of using this tool are also well documented. Again though, it is important to note that this same statement can be made for virtually _any_ other culture that practices glossolalia. Religious and cultural differences aside, the glossolalia an Evenki Shaman in Siberia, a vodoun priestess in Togo and a Christian tongues-speaker in Alabama are producing are in no way different from each other. They’re all producing their glossolalia in the exact same way; they just have different explanations and beliefs as to why they’re doing it, and where it comes from. It is only in certain Christian denominations where is it construed as something it never was. ‘Tongues’ (read, *‘languages’* ) - the divine gift, is the God given ability to effortlessly learn to speak and be understood through real-language barriers. It is not xenoglossy, nor is it modern tongues-speech.

@@paulral “Tongues of angels” is frequently used as a vehicle to posit ‘angelic speech’. That entire phrase, as well as a few others in that particular part of Paul’s letter, is 100% pure textbook hyperbole no matter how one wishes to slice and dice it. There’s just no getting around that. In all instances of angels speaking, it has always been in a real, rational language. In fact, in traditional Jewish belief, angels can only speak and understand one language; specifically, the sacred/sacerdotal language of Judaism, Hebrew. Paul, being a Jew, would have known this, which lends further support for his intentional use of hyperbole.

@@paulral I don't see any reason to suspect that they don't; however, as beings of pure spirit, I tend to doubt it's done with anything resembling a human vocal tract.

What if the Lord always gives the interpretation, but people don't speak it because uncertainty due to ack of experience walking in the gift or maybe due to fear of man...

Lots to think about. . . Acts two we are in Jerusalem, an international city where it was common to speak and or understand a variety of languages. Koine Greek was the most common languages in the Middle East, just about everyone had at least some understanding of it. During the event the city was filled with people from everywhere. The disciples received the gift of the Holy Spirit and began to praise God. People outside “heard” them in their own language, yet there were some who thought they were drunk. Ask your self why would anyone think someone was drunk when speaking their native tongue-they wouldn’t! I was an iInternational Studies student and traveled a good bit, I don’t for a minute think because I am hearing a foreign language that the person must be drunk. So what is happening here that would make a person think such a thing? Possibly because the glossia that we use sounds odd, and indeed it does. One last thing to think about, What language did Adam an Eve speak in? What happened at the tower of Babble? What language does ever language spoken today come from-The Tower of Babble. Is glossia tongues a universal language of God for not only enrichment for one another that regular language can’t express, but perhaps man’s original language in Eden. . .

Paul could have meant, he speaks in various tongues (many different languages), but when he is in a particular assembly, he speaks to THEM as they are able to understand him. Thoughts?

The baptism of the Holy Spirit opens a dimension of the Kingdom unavailable to those without it. It is not a salvation issue but of Kingdom effectiveness. We have supernatural tools, without which, cessationists are handicapped. Yes, those tools are enhanced through training, Eph 4:11-13.

If someone is speaking in tongues that are unintelligible and someone else said they could interpret what there saying, they could literally say anything they wanted to. If you speak modern tongues and I say I can interpret and say he's the Lord is going to have a revival. There is absolutely no way to prove that is really the Lord moving. I'll bet you it happens all the time so the proof would be to record before hand what is said and see if it comes to pass. I am anti-Calvinist by the way I reject reformed theology. I also think Dr. Michael Brown is what a Christian should be part spiritual and part scriptural. Usually people who are all about scripture don't have a spiritual side and I think thats wrong.
