After 3 years of Blender learning, I NOW finally force myself to focus on better topology haha. Whenever a newbie comes along I always tell them to include videos like this in their beginner phases to that you don't spend 3 years shooting yourself in the foot. This demonstration was great.

Exactly, I've been learning for around the same time and I've learned a lot! But I feel a little dumb because topology is something that I never tried to really get good at, and its ESSENTIAL! For anyone beggining their journey, focus on topology, it may seem a bit overwhelming but once you start to understand the techniques it becames a bit easier. I've subbed to this channel and I'm looking forward to more videos! There is a page that I found out about recently, John Dickinson, just that. The guy have a series only about topology, it's great and I strongly suggest it. @RenderRam , anything you can share about topology I'm here for it!

I am currently working to become a game programmer, and I started to get very interested into 3D modelling. I was trying to make a very simple landscape with a river using a boolean operation, but the lighting would always get distorted. Then I found this video and all of a sudden, everything became immediately clear! Thank you sir, you just saved me from multiple issues!

You could easily delete a ton of polys in that fan and cut down the file size and memory used without affecting tree final render.
@RenderRam
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Thing with that fan is that you have tons of details connected to one object so I had to preserve a bunch of edges, also it was modular so parts were connected with other parts so had to be sure in consistency, not to mention it needed to have macro shots so didn’t want to rely on massive turbo smoothing to get details looking fine, If it was a total shot just hanging in the room it would be 3 times more simple :)

Cool video, thanks for sharing. I always see myself obsessing about the topology which usually makes me spend what i feel like it's too much time modelling; It's even worse when you have to do normal map baking. How are your time constraints when modeling for production? I see the fan has a lot of radial symmetry that can save you a lot of time but for example, how much time have you spent on this fan?
@RenderRam
Жыл бұрын
this whole fan was I think a day of modeling, roughly 8 hours, because I deliver the fan model, I don't do the render, and I don't know who will render it and I don't know which shots will they choose, so I had to model every tiny little bit to cover all possible situations. On the other hand, when you invest tons of time into covering everything, it gives you peace because you know you lowered your chance of returning the model by 95%

For something as complex as that fan, doesn't the client have a CAD model already? Why not render directly from that?
@RenderRam
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Cad model was unavailable, on the other hand you get much smoother transitions with curved surfaces if you model it, not to mention you can easily add factory imperfections to enhance realism

04:00 unless these parts were gonna detach in an animation, why would you even model holes for the screws :) The holes are invisible in the render. Don't need to model what you don't see. Nice model though :)

Excellent advice. But what about complex curved organic shapes? It’s a mystery to me how to deal with wrinkles/unwanted dents- because as you say, the reflections snitch these things easily. I realize supporting loops are great. But what if nothing seems to get rid of certain dents and warped areas. I’m talking about the union area between two distinctly curved surfaces..? For example a lot of cars have surfaces like this.
@RenderRam

This video provides an excellent guide to joining curved surfaces with perfect reflections and perfect control over how sharp the joint is: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qolosoSMh6Jnhno (Check the "panel beating" video on that channel for more hard surface topology education.)
@snakedogman

The more details and organic shapes, the denser your topology needs to be. Many beginners simply attempt to model complex shapes with too little geometry to support to detail. Sometimes you need to subdivide and then continue modelling from that.

Hi again, I just have one question. In 3DS Max, how would you build the terrain between the roads? I've tried extruding the edges and connecting close vertices... I've also tried capping the hole then insetting the new face... But I feel like I'm taking too much time, and that this is not the correct technique...

I'm trying to create a flat terrain with a river passing through. The river's "boundaries" are represented by a quad strip following a spline, similar to the roads in your video, and the terrain is a simple plane with a grid topology. I cannot provide any screenshot right now, as it is quite late where I live. I'll try to take screenshots as soon as possible.

The quads seem to make a lot of redundant faces and points. The minimum necessary geometry to define a shape and the minimum necessary for raytracing and work reducing efficient geometries are the goals I seek. I feel like it is the job of the computer to figure out the optimum geometry and the creator to give just enough specificity that the computer does the rest and creates the result.

You will need to use some triangles, thats true, sometime they even make more sense than quads. But there is no reason to use an n-gon, almost never

Unless it’s a flat surface, on the other hand I agree it’s best to add some edges to guide that ngon so that triangulation doesn’t make a big mess
