During the early 1980s in Perth, the equivalent was called the CES for Commonwealth Employment Services. There were actually hand written (by the small group of staff) job vacancies pinned on a large pin-up board on the wall inside opposite the counter of friendly smiling staff. Unemployed people would come in everyday to write down the phone numbers ( yes, WRITE phone numbers down) of any new likely jobs, then go outside to the public phone booths to call the potential employers to see if the job was a good fit and to set up an interview (yes an INTERVIEW). After being unemployed for 3 months I finally got a job and went into CES to notify them. Everyone behind the counter and being served cheered and clapped and congratulated me as employment was considered hard to find at that time. I get really nostalgic for the old, different world in West Oz back then.

I always felt the C.E.S was much better than the private gougers we have nowadays. However the private ones know you better and try to match you better. But the C.E.S was all about get you out there no matter what. You found something on the board or computer kiosk, you took it to the employment section and they saw you almost straight away, checked your records against the requirements and lined up an interview for you. I remember in the mid 90s when little johnny privatized the C.E.S and many were angry and confused as to why. That was when you lined up and handed in your dole form every fortnight with 2 job search for the fortnight.

A job dealing with the public in the Tax Office is just as bad. There's all this stuff you need to know to answer all sorts of questions, forms etc that make no sense to anybody, computers all over the place and people getting very stressed out, bamboozled, scared, frustrated, bad communications.... You cop a lot of public abuse but you learn to mentally detach so you don't lose it and can just continue getting through it all. Not all jobs in government departments are easy or stress free...

Sounds like Datacom. They have/had contracts with Medicare, Australian Digital Health Agency, Home Affairs, Services Australia. Worked there on two contracts over 10 months, got fired after telling a HR rep to crawl out of my arse after they literally threatened to call the police for a welfare check after I did not show up for a single casual shift. I could not have lasted much longer - a fucking shitshow of soul-rending, blue tape-ridden anal pedantism and micromanagement. i am reminded of the 1985 film 'Brazil', lol...

I was at Blacktown centrelink about 4 years ago when i was a bludger and i was sitting on one of the chairs waiting my turn, i was looking at my phone when i heard "HAAAAAAPPY BIIIIIRTHDDDAAAYY TOOOOO YOOUUUUUU" these workers threw a birthday party in the middle of centrelink at the birthday girls desk, cake and all. They made everyone wait an extra 15 minutes while they threw this party and hung out and ate cake. The line ended up going out the door 10/10 would go back if i lose my job

pro tips if you're trying to get benefits from Centrelink: every time you go in take all of your documents and take a new bank statement. meaning ALL of your documents even if you've already given it to them. did i mention ALL of your documents? because they will lose them and you will be back 20 minutes later or the next day waiting in line for that one and a half hours again. no they don't accept flash drives. print ALL of your documents out and take them. don't argue, just bring the thing they want in tomorrow and every other time with all of your documents. take something to do while you wait and these days, a camping chair to sit on. bout it.
