people that play guitar or other instruments with pedals and Fx understand this well

To add to the conversation, remove Reverb/Delays and Hyper/DIMENSION Expanders before you start processing the sound. I always tell people that Reverbs/Delays are meant to showcase the sound, but do not use the REVERB/DELAY unless it's part of your process. Who likes the SERUM REVERB? NOT ME... As for the Mix portion I agree many preset makers make their sounds THIN, as fck and not practical. I use to do it as well until 2 years ago when I decided to change that due to the amount of competition in the field of sound design. THICK Sounds.... not Thin my friends. Good video as always from you guys!

Since I come from electric guitar, all these things are taught through effect pedals, for which there is a "correct" order. I still love to experiment with sound, so using modulation behind delays, using a "reverb sandwich" on pads etc. is something I do a lot.

I always do saturation/distortion BEFORE reverb and delay because, it doesn't ruin the stereo image, so let me clarifty this: a signal processed first with room denies you the opportunity to add more harmonics in the stereo field, saturation adds this harmonics, distorition just underlines this in the lows or low-midrange of a signal. So therefore, this way of processing makes more sense and you don't need to fiddle out the frequencies by running an equalizer over it, to see where you can boost, negate or reduce frequencies.

putting the overdrive distortion after the reverb can help making the transitions between the distorted and quiet sounding parts of the signal smoother. idk if that matters for the style of that beat but i'd say especially if it's uncommon i would encourage it to be done more often to explore new directions of sound. maybe we can find a new genre that sits somewhere between dark tech and shoegaze in a cool way

This is pretty basic but yeah I guess total newbies… the biggest upgrade to my mix came when I realized that you want to saturate/clip/compress each bus or even individual tracks and max them before going through the master track so the limiter and whatever else is not overwhelmed. That was a huge upgrade to clarity and especially for a solid low end mix

They are two different sounds, one is not wrong, unless you didn't intend to make it like that, which is what you say at the start the "have intention behind your actions/decisions". Distorting reverb/delays is a fun sound imo, and that or hard compression is exactly how you make certain sounds, short or gated reverb in to crunch. I'm not really much of self-learner, but this fx-chain order stuff was kind of obvious very early on. one way it sounded awful (because I didn't plan for it) and the other way sounded better, so I'm surprised if people actually struggle with this.

Don't waste time trying to learn alone, that is pure darkness and you may never get anywhere. Learn from those who know, pay a professional. Don't spend 8 hours around a loop. Learn to discard it, or to accept and move on with something that is not 100% the way you wanted. Everything has to be measured and effective from the beginning, the idear and direction as to be clear. The samples have to be right. Don't abuse the EQ, you will destroy the sound. Try to work quickly but with intelligence. Making serious music is not for everyone. DON'T DO LIKE ME. I WALKED IN THE DARK FOR YEARS AND THEN I HAD TO GO TAKE A COURSE.

where would reverbs and delays stand if theyre being used as sends and not direct inserts? in terms of placement of plugins?
@TheCosmicAcademy
4 ай бұрын
Sends and returns are typically at the end of the chain. You will then see options of if you want to make your send/return pre fader, post fader, or post pan. This would just be where it falls in line relative to those three stages of your signal flow!
@iamtygar

@@TheCosmicAcademy Ok so would it be beneficial to make them post fader or does it not matter? This has been something that has confused me since I started using sends

Where do you put your sidechain compressor then? I usually do that towards the end of the chain.
@TheCosmicAcademy

Yup! Usually towards the end…can be before or after spatial fx. Really depends on if you want the fx to have the exaggerated pump, or remain more stationary

why do you use the OTT plugin if you are using ableton?
@TheCosmicAcademy

simplicity and interface, to be honest! i find the Xfer one to be wayyyyy easier to get to my intended sound. the ableton one gives a lot more options (attack/release times, and more) but it slows me down.

@TheCosmicAcademy

They absolutely do! Everyone has a different background when self taught. Lotta times people can learn step 10 before learning step 1. And there’s a difference between using inserts and sends and returns. It shouldn’t be one or the other…you wanna use both! They each give you a different result to your sound!
