Upgraded from an older 18v kit. kzitem.infoUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

I sure hope not, Milwaukee isn't dumb there's a very good reason the wrench and driver are the way they are. The hammer im the impact is more skookum and will handle abuse for longer. Generally the driver isn't stalled out impacting as its driving screws and the anvil has some forward inertia. The impact wrench will spend more times stalled impacting so it needs to have better durability

I'd assume (a big assumption) that the mechanics of the impact driver might produce better numbers, but lose long-term durability when used this way? Gonna have to ask Milwaukee about this. Fantastic video TTC. Grats Man Caver on such a cool build! I've watched this twice. Bout to watch it again!
@TorqueTestChannel

That was our 1st thoughts as well! But we know some jobsite guys who lay into these as hard as we do on our wrenches if not more. Maybe its just at those torque levels its no Bueno, but at lower no worries.
@btrswt35
3 жыл бұрын
With the increase in bpm I would also assume you are on to something. That said, guys use the impact drivers longer and harder with repetitive screw driving than removing a handful of bolts at a time. Definitely interesting.
@LordOfSilense
3 жыл бұрын
Something not mentioned here is that impact drivers impact both forward and rotationally, while impact wrenches only impact rotationally. If the actual striking mechanism isn't changed, then using an impact driver with a 1/2" anvil swap is going to absolutely destroy the detent pin spring in the anvil, the detent pin hole in the sockets, or the hog nose ring over time just by constantly popping it in and out of alignment as the tool is being used. Impact driver's have that slop in the 1/4" hex to allow for that forward and back movement, sockets don't. For Milwaukee to shove an anvil on the impact driver, they'd have to create specialty sockets that allow for forward/back slop (maybe by having an extended detent pin groove?) otherwise warranty is going to kill them.
@tadasstrikauskas1205
3 жыл бұрын
Looks like many small punches are better than one big. It's logical: When wrench punches the nut, slower speed (bigger intervals) creates a pressure gap to the nut, so the nut rebounds and wrench starts from almost the same pressure spot. Driver is faster so removes such impact gaps and the pressure to the nut is more constant. What about air pressure wrenches? Aren't they also like 7000 IPM? Would be interesting to see with slow motion camera.
@btrswt35
3 жыл бұрын
@@LordOfSilense interesting point. I would wonder if it would wear the sockets out prematurely or if the wear would be cumulative and last until the useful life of the socket is used up. I don't know if the forward and backward movement is enough to cause excessive wear or not. Sounds like we need someone to do some long term testing.

I love this test. Years ago I found a brushless DeWalt kit at home Depot that was on clearance. It included an impact driver with that cheesy quarter inch hex bit. I went online and ordered a 3/8 anvil for a non brushless and after cutting the decals and opening it up I found that it fit. As a mechanic it's the best tool I've ever had at work!
@Patrick-857
3 жыл бұрын
Cheesy? Wtf are you on about. Quarter inch hex impact drivers have changed the game for most trades. They are for driving screws. If the mod works for you, great. But as a builder I couldn't live without that "cheesy" tool. All you have done is convert it into a wrench. That's great, but now it sucks at driving screws, that's why I have two impact drivers that get run hard every day, and an impact wrench I only bring out to drive bolts into concrete, a job all my mates use impact drivers for.
@schlomoshekelstein908

I think you answered the fundamental question with the failure of the 1/4" adapter -- the reason they put more beans into the impact driver is speed, not torque. They figure it will never be used for 200+ ft/lbs applications but once in a blue moon, so they don't have to design the internals to take that much punishment. I bet if you drove it to max torque a few hundred times, the impact driver would fail long before the impact wrench, which is designed for repeated high torque applications.

Ok so I made this conversion myself and I’ve used it for a while now. I’m a auto tech and use it daily. The things it’s taken off is crazy. My own personal Frankenstein driver is just shy of a year old and it cops some serious abuse. I did it myself to specifically use it for zipping off wheels and whatnot instead of swinging my high torque around. Long story short, my high torque pretty much collects dust now. Crank bolts, axle nuts, you name it and this little freak can do it. Obviously there are limitations, but for something so small, it packs a serious punch. 👌🏼👌🏼

Have you considered running each tool until a clear peak shows? In general, a lot of the tools still have an upwards slope when you stop the tests. The manufacturers may be running them until a max value is reached, regardless the time.
@agoogleuser1188

I think the point is that anything longer than 15 seconds is sort of absurd to just let it impact sit on a bolt and I mean yeah you could build more torque that way but I think they’re just trying to demonstrate how much torque you could reasonably expect

@@agoogleuser1188 yes. “Reasonably expect”. But the question that he posed, was a pretty good one. Maybe the numbers aren’t met sometime due to manufacturers just running the tool until the peak stops. At whatever length of time that may be. Be pretty interesting to watch, but a WHOLE different test, and couldn’t be put on the point charts that are currently used- since there would be no common factor- such as elapsed time (5,10, or 15 sec in these cases), since each impact separately could potentially run infinitely (or a different number of seconds each). It would seriously be nothing more than a plot of how high you could make it go! 🤔 🤔 which would still be cool to see lol

So I think I might know the reason they don’t build this. I was watching an interview with an engineer for chainsaws. The discussion was “why do you limit the power of these saws?” Knowing that with modification these saws can put out wild horsepower and way outperform stock. The engineer essentially said he can make a saw that would beat 2 classes above it, but it will only run for maybe 15-20 hours, where as we can provide steady working saws at different levels that will run for hundreds of hours. So I feel that they don’t do this in order to provide longer lasting tools at various levels. That said, saws are a 2 cycle combustion engine which has a much more demanding method of making power.

Imagine if Milwaukee had developed the the "Freak" attachment Bosch did that combined the 1/4 and 1/2 impact and wrench heads?

I think they'd just lose sales on full impacts vs a max like idk 50 dollar deal? Probably far less. Love the idea too, but for a buisness standpoint i think it would not be good. It's gonna be them or another brand that does it though so.

Makes me wonder about the long term viability. The anvil from an impact wrench has a higher mass for inertia so the motor doesn’t have to spin as fast. Torque over speed. Whereas the driver is using speed and a lower mass anvil to achieve the torque. So it makes me wonder if the MCT motor will burn out faster than the wrench.

"Force per blow" matters, especially for compact electric impacts. I owned Milwaukee's first generation compact, to remove small assemblies, valve covers, alternators. Hated it.

Overall interesting channel, looking forward to seeing more. The term "begging the question" is meant to be used for circular reasoning, it is not meant to ask the question, so be sure to use the phrase only when circular reasoning is being applied. If it's not, then use "asks the question" or "raises the question."

The first gen, brushed, Milwaukee range had an m12 2462, 1/4 impact driver and a 2463 3/8 impact wrench. Looking at the parts breakdown of both the only difference is the anvil. There was 200 inch pounds spec difference (3/8 wrench being higher). I know these are old news but it looks like Milwaukee has already thought of this some time ago. Don't know why they discontinued this practice.

I think that an impact driver is ment to instal/remove screws that don't require it to work as hard and not bolts. It will quickly burn out if it is being used to remove torqued bolts all day because the motor would be working at 100% most of the time because a lot of the force comes from how fast hard it can hit its small hammer. Since it needs to move fast to hit the hammer hard, it produces a lot of torque fast. An imlact wrench motor only needs to overcome the Hamer spring as the hammer spring is already doing a lot of the work and the motor does not have to make the hammer hit hard because the mass of the hammer is what matters and gives it its power, thus the motor does not need to spin so fast or have a lot of resestance and will last longer. But again that is my opinion.

I was about to say it would be cool if it was one of those uh...hex bit and anvil combo deals where you COULD stick a bit into it, but well milwaukee would lose sales, and that's not gonna happen, but it would be cool. Nice how that homeade tool stacks up and just works its magic.

I'm wondering if maybe the reason the driver offers more IPM is a lighter weight hammer assembly. Then my only concern would be long term longevity. If it tears itself apart internally in half the time of the wrench, that could be why milwaukee didn't go that route. I have no idea, this is just speculation without seeing all the parts side by side. Still I'd love to build one for those annoyingly tight spaces.

another thing to think about is the socket yes the same socket was used but the impact driver hits faster and i bet the hammer is also larger which would add up to more force early on then flatten out

I considered doing this myself but opted against it for 2 reason. 1st was obviously warranty. the 2nd thing that made me not do it was the internals. The impact driver is super powerful, but it only uses a 2 pinion ring gear vs the wrench's 3 pinion. I was worried over long term abuse it would not hold up.

Settle a debate for me, what is “stronger” torque wise? Chrome or impact. If you use a multiplier and digital torque adapter to show values, what would break first. I know chrome can’t take “impact torque” but I would like to see the vs in pure torque.

Just remember: there are other considerations here. It's not just torque, but torque + cost + usability + durability. If it wins in torque and usability but loses in cost and/or durability, it might be an overall loser for Milwaukee.

Those new Gen 1/4” hex impacts actually piss me off. I do a lot of millwork everything from small bolts to large (when you’re taking out 100 bolts you’re not breaking them by hand first). The “1” setting on those new gens is basically “almost 3” on the old gens and it constantly snaps m6 and smaller bolts simply because it hits so hard and fast. This would actually be an amazing mod. Because hex adapters do waste a ton of space and I didn’t want to spend more money on a stubby
@ObservationofLimits

And those Dewalt 1/4” adapters hold up great until you lean on em or drop em. And the retaining balls don’t seem to wear out like on so many other brands. But I really need to find 1/4” *locking* hex adapters that unlock by pulling the collar *forward*. Every brand I’ve found unlocks pulling the collar back, which when using a 6mm or 8mm Allen socket on 240 sequential SHCS for blade changes, means the damn socket comes off and stays in every other bolt head.

Does your impact have variable speed, controlled by how far you press the button? And a power level setting? I use my impact driver and even my impact wrench even on small wood screws without issues, but always at low power and moderate speed.
