Hey everyone! Finally uploaded the review of the YoYoFactory IQ and the R type. Bought both of them as a bundle deal during their A-May-Zing sale for $100. I believe the R type is to be released in June of 2022 and is the mono-metal version of the IQ.
First impressions on the two are that...they're really wide. Like...very wide. The first few hours of playing it was definitely a very strange feel in the hand. It's sorta bulky and it honestly did not feel comfortable...at first.
After a few days of playing with it where I got the hang of holding it and I have to say that these 2 throws are pretty beastly.
If you've been following my channel, you'll remember that I'm not exactly the biggest fan of YYF. I think it was mainly my first experience with YYF's unresponsive yoyos in 2014, the prototype Regen and Protostar (I wish I didn't sell them off back then). Their shapes just felt weird in the hand. Similar to the IQ and the R Type, these odd shapes really takes some time to really understand the nuances. AND these two really did need time to get used to.
The IQ is a bi-metal where the steel ring is slightly inward from the rim giving it a different bi-metal feel. Most outward ring bi-metals tend to have an extreme amount of power on the rim (most of the time but it also varies on the rest of the body of the yoyo). The IQ feels very comfortable, soft to the touch and very light. There isn't much mid body weight and just a touch of boucey-ness which i can assume is because of the nipple in the center of the cup. The IQ's inner cup is polished while the rest of the body has a blasted finish except for the polished area near the bearing.
Once you get used to the strange shape of the yoyo, the IQ really performs, and don't get me started on it's ability to do horizontal. I'm pretty terrible in horizontal but both the IQ and R Type really helps make things a bit easier. There are other yoyos that can do that as well but it feels so comfortable with these two.
Now the R Type is the monometal version of the IQ. Almost every characteristic you get from the IQ is almost the same with the R Type. EXCEPT...I actually like the R Type more than the IQ.
The R Type is just a smidge heavier so horizontal play will be just a little bit harder in comparison to the IQ, but it's still good for it. I think the biggest difference is since it's a monometal, you can really feel a better connection with the yoyo.
So where the IQ is floaty with a little bounce to it, the R Type is quite a bit more balanced. It still feels floaty almost like most bi-metal yoyos, but just a step under where you can actually feel that there's a little mid body weight distribution making the R Type slightly floaty but with more bounce.
Overall, my only gripe with these two is it's strange shape, but what I kind like about these two is because of it's strange shape or at least the performance it brings because of it.
The IQ feels more like it has quite some rim weight, but less power compared to other heavier bi-metals, possibly because of the body weight. I'm thinking the IQ has a 75R/25C because of it's floaty-ness.
The R type is a 60R/40C. It's definitely feels floaty but you can really feel the string hits.
With the consideration that the R Type is...I think estimated at $45, which is comparable to the Shutter, they both do have different personalities and I can't pick one over the other.
If you were to ask me what I would choose between the R Type and the IQ. I would definitely go for the R Type as it feels more comfortable at play.
