It was actually pretty behind the times, but the CD addon allowed for great music

Considering PC Engine was out 3 years before the SNES, I'd say it's pretty damn impressive, especially with some of the cutscene graphics and voice acting seen in Dawn of Ys

@@beanbottler The PC Engine wasn't really much more powerful than the Sega Master system. The music, cutscene graphics and voice acting were likely all just a product of the CD addon giving the developers lots of space to play with. I think the real props here goes to the composer and arranger, who made an absolutely excellent piece of music. ...I miss when games had music like this so much.

Even Mieko Ishikawa's original composition from 1989 for PC-88 was amazing if you think about it. How did she and other composers like Yuzo Koshiro squeeze so much out of limited sound technology, it's astounding. Those original compositions are the basis for what we have so many years later, they set the standards. Ys and JRPGs wouldn't be known for orchestral and neoclassical rock if it wasn't for them being inspired by the classically-influenced rock and even pop music at the time in the 80s. As much as I love the newer arrangements, I feel like some kick is lost that only those early synth sounds could provide, and that wasn't even how I heard these tracks the first time (I think I heard the PCE versions first, Ryo Yonemitsu arranges)

Really great song. Even though some versions sound like they were recorded with a potato, the music still sounds cool. That's the mark of quality right there.

The Nes version actually plays for 1 or 2 secs before switching to the normal boss music in the game... For some reason.

I noticed this too when I played the NES version, and was very disappointed that they didn't just use The Strongest Foe for the actual fight.

I haven't yet. Thanks for remind me. Sadly, youtube is on a rampage right now so I wouldn't be surprised if I get yet another copyright strike. Anyways, it should be finished in 1 week more at most.

Do you make money out of your videos via ads? I think that users that upload copyrighted content "for free" are not affected. I have had warnings off of 3rd party content, but I've only been flagged once. And the latest video from my series (which I invite you to check given you like VGM v=hQJY5U6tKm8) had no problems. Dunno. It'd be cool if you upload it someday.

I can't understand all the hate the SNES soundtrack gets on these videos. Is it because the sounds are so unusual compared to normal music / instrumentation? imo, the sounds are unique and give the soundtrack a distinctive and interesting character

Too many sega fanboys on these videos is your answer. they are just bitter because their console creator no longer makes consoles and want to relive the glory days of when sega was relevant. I do prefer YS 3 soundtrack on the Genesis over the Super NES, but my opinion still stands.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I don't hate the SNES port's soundtrack in a "console wars" sort of way. I hate it because it's genuinely poorly made, and I've played enough SNES games to know that they could have done a way, _way_ better job at it.

@@TheDemoniusXi have not seen a single comment about anything relating to console favoritism, the snes version of the songs are usually the weakest and poorly made with weird instrumentation. Not to mention, snes games can and have done better (mega man x1-3, super mario world, etc) but ys iii just doesn't sound nearly as good as those do You're also ignoring how most people either have the pc-engine as their favorite or the ps2 as their favorite so solely saying that genesis fans are hating on the snes version makes no sense. Like the genesis is only one of the many versions.

snes for me probably because its what i first played it on, imprinted into me.
I kinda like how the arrangement of the X68000 sound. To be honest, the PC Engine CD can blow me away on Valestein Castle or Be Careful but here, i don't feel it's that much ahead of the others. I also really like some NES arrangement (A Searing Struggle, Illburns Ruins...) but here on The Strongest Foe, it really didn't work at all...

@@SonicSlicer I often heard that the Megadrive and the PC-98 had a very very similar soundship. For this reason, the Megadrive arrangement is actually quite faithful to the original one. The SNES is.... yeah... Well let's say they didn't knew what to do with the SNES soundchip.
