This is actually nothing short of incredible. Beyond words. What a complete mastery she has over the keys - and how well she understands the music itself. That ethereal, reflective melancholy that haunts this piece is captured beautifully. Bravo.

Those who think Yuja Wang's performance is too fast should know perhaps that Scriabin marked this piece Andante. So I think her tempo is just perfect including the slight accelerando towards the middle for the climax of this gorgeous jewel. I'm sure Scriabin would have loved it...

I don't even find it much faster than most recordings, a lot of amateur performances of this piece take it at an adagio, but anyone well versed in Russian music seems to play it around this tempo.

People arguing that Yuja played too fast don't know the essence.. No music is too slow if it's flowing; no music is too fast if it delicately expresses the right emotions ..
@hjuniform

they simply don't like the speed because they are not used to it or first heard a version that is slow. I personally don't mind either, as you said, it is never too slow or too fast if the message is clear with a breathable flow.

@@hjuniform I am guessing this is closer to the tempo Scriabin would have played it. he was a virtuoso pianist who couldn't use his right arm for a while due to an injury - I am guessing he was fiending to play something difficult with the hand he had (most of the left-hand repertoire was written after WW1 when a soldier lost his arm and commissioned a bunch of pieces, there wasn't much before), and while this isn't a virtuoso piece, I seriously doubt he intended it to be slow and easy; he probably welcomed a quicker tempo that would challenge him a bit more.

I agree with you statement, and while Yuja does play this slightly faster than others, she leave out no nuance in so doing. In fact she brings out the melody and other secondary lines far better than most. Plus her overall performance of this little gem is extremely expressive. This is not a glib performance or one in which she is struggling in any way.

Would seem that some people placing comments on KZitem would prefer beautiful and talented pianists like Yuja Wang and Khahtia Buniatishvili to wear full body enclosing ''Burka'' like clothing whilst playing the piano in their concerts...... Mr ''Putinmulticolor'' for one !! Yes Yuja is so talented and has she ever looked more beautiful than this at a concert ?

The only thing I dislike in this performance is that she stops before the wonderful following Nocturne (I'd love to hear it with such quality). Bravo Yuja, it's amazingly beautiful.
I have a dumb question. Why playing with only one hand?

After injuring his right hand, possibly due to stretching his fingers too far, Scriabin wrote the beautiful Prelude and Nocturne to be played solely by the left hand.

@@trickiewoowoo Injured while playing Liszt. Dude could only stretch a ninth; doctor said he would never play with his right hand again. He eventually did regain use of his right hand, but his injury made him more creative with his rhythms and these sorts of ideas stayed with him even after the right hand healed.

I find this too prosaic for early scriabin. I would not confuse sensitivity with the ability to play pianissimo.. and I feel she does not have the sound this music needs - warmth, colours.
