Eric here. Sorry this one is late--but also, note that things can and will change on the schedule. This episode used a new recording method, and it made it truly into Yumi and the Nightmare Edit. Usually I can crank these out in just a full day's work, about 6-8 hours or so. This took me somewhere between triple and quadruple the time. I spent at least 25 hours on it Friday through Sunday and had more work to do on it Monday... so yeah I'm having fun. I had to split this up into seven different pieces and stitch them together again. I think it's intelligible, but if there's problems... well, it is what it is now, I never want to look at this ever again. Also my extreme hand pain made very fun. Anywhoooo I worked hard to get this out, I promise! The best part? Even with all that, there's a critical flaw in the recording method that subtly affects this entire episode! How fun! I wonder if you all can figure out what it is. I noticed it by WTCC time and "fixed" it there (which could only be done by introducing a second problem). I expect people to comment on the issue, but they probably won't realize it's a recording issue... Anyway, upcoming schedule. As always, subject to change. July 25th - Secrets in Stained Glass Episode 3 July 30th - Shardcast Week of July 30th, TWO Secrets in Stained Glass stories August 8th - Secrets in Stained Glass Episode 4 August 13th - Shardcast Week of August 13th, THREE Secrets in Stained Glass stories August 22nd - Secrets in Stained Glass Episode 5 [Finale] SpanReads returns late August!

2:06:09 On the idea that the yoki-hijo are highly Invested, but their society just never figured out how to use their Invested Art--I think it's relevant to mention that in Warbreaker, Awakening was only discovered something like 400 years before the events of the book. So for millennia, Nalthis had random Returned popping up full of Investiture, unable to do anything with it, then dying a week later. And everyone had BioChroma, but nobody knew what to do with it for assumedly 10,000 years, or however long it had been since Endowment settled down on Nalthis.

1:27:10 and on the point of tempering with his memories, remember the "spiky coathanger crown" Design put on him and then when he started mooving again it was the only thing he didn't take off immedietely among all the other fixtures, he "...kept the crown though. It was a special kind of awful."? That seemed to me like a very funny connection to Odium fsr. Also there were like a couple moments where scholars mentioned that commends included producing energy and protecting itself. And with where they get the investiture to awaken the machine there was a moment where scholars had to start up the mini-machine and they were arguing over who is going to "prime" it with like a part of their own investiture, maybe kinda soul and how it almost took some Yumi's energy, so they maybe used some willing or less than willing participants basically as breaths to awaken it. And then there's this parallel between how taking away breaths leave people colorless and unnoticible and how taking a part of the spiritweb from normal non-metalborn people with a hemalurgic spike and then affecting that spike to make it into some weak version of particular ability, so... Pretty interesting.

On Liyun: It's also worth considering that, through her methods, she has crafted the greatest existing stone stacker. Now, we know, this is not a product of her methods, it's a product of 1700 years of experience, other methods would have sufficed. But she is ignorant to this, as far as she can tell her devotion to the traditions has created a prodigy, it makes sense that she would be so bound to them. I do wonder, what about the other yoki-hijo? I thought that they were also going through the same experience as Yumi, in their own isolated bubbles, yet we never see them. Presumably they would also be potentially prodigious stone stackers, given the same amount of experience as Yumi.

I think if Yumi’s cover was black/dark grey (like the nightmares) it was would 1. Separate it more and 2. Really make the blue, pink, and gold foiling PoP better with the added contrast. I also think the dark blue kinda clashes with the cyan/blue foil as well. As for the inside artwork it’s flawless and I need prints ASAP 💜

I do think its a Sanderson fan/Cosmere fan thing of needing to understand everything or get an explanation for every aspect of a fantasy story. So much fantasy has weird, magical or otherworldly phenomena that doesn't get an explanation because - well, fantasy. I think the cosmere stuff reads like either soft magic or soft worldbuilding - of you can call it that - where you don't understand all the references but it actually shows that there is a greater world out there with other stories and adventures happening that you don't know about. This relates to the tell not show issue in this book. I also hated those info dumps, took me out of it completely. I think he should have integrated what he could, and whatever else could have been a mystery. Try to show as much as possible and imply the rest through symbolism etc., but we didn't need clear cut answers for every magiczl element in this story. We have enough cosmere lore to work some theories up, and its ok for us to not have striaght answers for everything.

A thought I had on why it may have stopped consuming investiture goes in line with its need to defend itself. If it sucked up all human investiture at once then it could no longer continue its command. That being said is another theory as to why it stopped sucking the investiture of the humans is because Yumi was giving the machine such a constant stream of energy through re-summoning the spirits that it diverted its attention to a more sustainable source.

Just catching up to this now. I finished the book last night, I am yet to eat the last Cosmere secret project but so far I like Tress more. For me I could only really connect with Painter. The romance didn't really work for me, and some of the resolutions at the end made me bad. One of them being Painter's "friends" I just didn't like the whole thing where it resolved "we were wrong but you were wrong too" and in my eyes one party ("friends") was way more wrong than the other. I honestly wish he wouldn't have stayed friends with them, patching up and resolving what happened was fine but I wish they hadn't stayed friends. I don't foresee returning to the book, unfortunately I don't share Alyx's feelings about the characters. This makes me glad there are 3 whole Cosmere secret projects, there's something for everyone.

1:04:32 THIS! It's sensual but never deviates into being sexual. Their interactions are so tastefully done as to celebrate the empathy the two--who are normally so isolated and alone--are confronted with and must so-suddenly contend. Every step they take is a lesson in understanding and respect, since their situation disallows them the typical societal dances of propriety. In times of friction or tension, each physical touch brings a wave of empathy for emotions neither of them would have the words (or emotional intelligence) to convey. It would've been SO easy for Brandon to accentuate the lust of each situation; instead, he chose to bring out the multitude of other immensely important experiences that *is* intimacy with another person-experiences we as a culture so easily sweep under the rug. It's why I think this romance is so amazing.

In defence of the info dumps, what Brandon was doing was essentially the same as a detective doing their deduction show. I had already figured out almost everything Hoid says in that part, but many other readers clearly had not. This is sort of the way mysteries often work, if you want the reader to have the fun of figuring things out on their own you need to eventually give them the answers to check against. In the same vein some readers won't figure things out or won't engage with the mystery so they need to explanation to understand. Part of the reason people struggled with this one is because part of the point was that the characters themselves weren't interested in figuring these things out, but many readers sould be. Also that switch to the all nightmares is where the book picked up for me, I wasn't super into it up until that point.

So, the yoki-hijo can't alter reality. They can manipulate investiture to follow their will. Since Yumi is pure investiture and the whole area she's in is pure investiture, she's just manipulating it to conform to her will. As for the Command for the machine, I believe the book mentioned it. The Command was to gather the spirits. It just didn't differentiate from the spirits as in the cognitive manifestation of investiture made manifest and spirits inside a person.

I didn't mind the infodump horribly, but I could see a version of this where hints that everything is fake is dropped via shadows where there shouldn't be shadows and maybe if painters occasionally saw bits of nightmare memory when they're painting away a nightmare. Then you could make some images that don't make a ton of sense at the start, but become contextualized during the climax. Admittedly, that sounds difficult to properly set up, and this was Brandon's pet project originally, so it might be too much work to set up.

What if the link between the shroud and nightblood is in the phrasing of the command, and inherent misunderstanding of cosmere physics. You mentioned “create energy” as a potential command. Brandon has said that just like matter and energy cannot be destroyed in our world, only made to change shape, investiture is the same way. So if they did say create energy, it would be the opposite problem that nightblood has had… he can’t destroy evil, he can only transmute it into a different form, the machine can’t create energy, it has to get it from elsewhere. Twitter is awful NOW?! Twitter has ALWAYS been awful. It isn't worse now, it's just that you can now see how bad it has been for everyone else.

Twitter has always been bad, yes, but I do think it's easy to argue it's very clearly strictly worse in almost every respect. Maybe don't fire your whole staff Elon! But it certainly was a cesspit all the time. But what I'm referring to here is less community stuff (though the community is even more terrible) but more just, insane decisions like "hey let's make it so you can only view a certain amount of tweets every day." Like, what? That's just insane, and advertisers have left in droves, and their revenue is way down! Way to go Elon. Anyway, I could talk about this for a while; the tech itself is way worse and the boneheaded decisions (like API changes) and stuff have made it much more difficult in every respect even if you wanted to deal with it. But I want to also strongly agree that Twitter is a cesspit where nuance goes to die and everyone is angry all the time, and it's all terrible. All of that is true! -Eric

Like 17S had a Twitter Feed which we could display both 17S tweets and Brandon tweets. That's objectively useful. Now it's just broken and doesn't work. That's the stuff I'm talking about. I would recommend for anyone's sanity to go on social media less, though. For our case it was a pretty efficient way to share and reshare certain things and keep people not directly on our platform in the loop. Hope that makes sense.

I've just realized Brandon has published a new book because of this video showing up in my subscription feed. And I've just started reading through and I have yet to find out what the book is about. However, my mind just blew after reading the term "nimi" for the first time, so many questions, what does it mean that this word can be found in Roshar. 🤯

I assume the reason design didn’t get eaten by the mechine was because she was made of different investiture, similar reason to why different investitures repel each other

The inspiration that was never mentioned on the book and I think is very well woven in the second part of the book is End of Evangelion. We have: - A group of people who thought they knew better in the scholars (Gendo/SELEE) - A machine that, onced turned on, worked in ways said group of people didn't consider and backfired (Rei making Shinji choose once Instrumentality initiated) - People turning to smoke/The Shroud (Fanta) - A young woman who confronts her past and upbringing in Yumi (Asuka lol) - A cringy male character who saves the day in the end in Nikaro (Shinji of course) - The Shroud coalescing into a Yumi thaks to Painter's love and connection (Asuka on the beach at the end when Shinji decides to return to separete bodies for humans) - A friend called Toji (the most blatant reference)

At 1:44:57 You wonder why Hoid was "eaten" when Design wasn't and I think that's because she isn't manifested in the physical realm. I think it was in her first conversation she mentioned that they gave up on tryin g to manifest spren in the physical realm because things got messy, so instead what I assumed is that Hoid fixed a Lightweaving over her in the Cognitive Realm so that she can interact through that in the Physical. This also explains why she can see Painter because both of them are in the Cognitive Realm.

Question before I continue watching: Are there any major Lost Metal spoilers in this? I got about 18 mins in but I'd rather not continue if it does have LM spoilers since I haven't read it yet.

I don't think major TLM spoilers, no. More Stormlight stuff. It can be a bit tricky to keep all the info separate but I'm pretty sure I'm correct here. -Eric

To offer some solace to Eric on the maipon/Maipon sticks: it could very well be that they are exclusively capitalized in Sel. As long as you are Selish, a Maipon stick is literally "an eating utensil that came from Maipon." But once you are outside of it, "maipon" just becomes the name of a thing. Think of how champagne used to mean "the beverage brewed in the region of Champagne," and for a while everyone would have capitalized it if such grammatical rules existed already. But nowadays only a tiny fraction of champagne is literally produced there, the word no longer means a place and has instead taken the meaning of "fizzy alcoholic beverage with low alcoholic content" or whatever, and nobody capitalizes it anymore. As soon as the meaning link to the place disappears and the word becomes a noun unto itself, there is no reason to capitalize it. Otherwise every cheese name on the planet would always have to be capitalized. The words morph from an adjective into an actual noun, it happens.

2:16:04 it didn't stop gathering people once it's gotten ahold of spirits. That's actually when it started going after people. According to the story, the people became scattered because of the rampage until they found out that the hook lines repel the nightmares. So that's how they built their cities.

So, a technique was uses to create a human body that could match the spirit web of a highly invested being, and not one person mentioned that that is almost exactly what Kelsier is looking for? The entire end of the book for me was worrying about the Ghostbloods finding out about this.

Sorry, but the ending that we got was a betrayal of Yumi's character arc. A sacrifice that cost nothing means nothing. She had something to live for, but knew that she had to sacrifice herself to save Nikaro, and everyone else. Losing her was so tragically beautiful, reminiscent of Vin & Ellend's deaths at the end of The Hero of Ages. This had the chance to be a beautiful book, and the ending nearly ruined it for me.

We see an awakened machine in this book, so does that mean that this world's magic system is similar to the breath/soul based magic system on Nalthis? Or is this more like you can awaken objects with any type of investiture and they just accidentally achieved the same effect?
@king_dot

It seems like it’s a mixture of that and soulcasting/forgery given what the spirits can do

I really liked the book, but not as much as Tress and watching this I realise it's because the characters didn't work for me. They were both v teenage and immature and I just couldn't relate much unfortunately. I really loved the twists in the back half though and I also think it would be amazing as an adaptation. It's so anime it's ridiculous. Maybe I was also just a bit disappointed that it wasnt more trans or queer lol. it just felt so STRAIGHT. loved the happy ending tho
