YUNGAY CITY DESTROYED AND BURIED IN 1970
.
The inhabitants of the Yungay province make up peoples with a history and multimillennial culture that have their origins in the beginning of civilization, whose vestiges dating back to 10,600 years BC in the Cueva del Guitarrero show that this land was one of the first centers of development of agriculture in America.
Due to the continuous tectonic phenomena in this highly seismic area, the towns that settled in these lands suffered several accidents, which led to this area having several vestiges of towns such as Huarca, Queushu, Marccayoc, Etzahuain (Etsaswaain), Huansakay, Orqotunan, Jato Viejo, Collo-Jirca, Unchuscoto and others (all older than 1,500 years) and the Town of Ancash (1725). In the last century, the Ranrahirca alluvium (1962) and the disappearance of the city of Yungay (1970) stand out, when an immense amount of ice collapsed from the north summit of the Nevado Huascarán bicorne, covering practically the entire city with rocks and mud. . The tragedy of May 31, 1970 called for world solidarity and reconstruction during the government of Juan Velasco Alvarado.
The province was created by the Law of October 28, 1904, in the government of President José Pardo y Barreda, with its homonymous capital, along with the third of the Province of Huaylas, by division of the second province of the same name of Huaylas.
