He's got a parasomnia. It sounds like he lacks (skeletal) muscle paralysis/atonia during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is typically when people dream. This is referred to as RBD (REM sleep Behavior Disorder). It's relatively rare & more common in older males. There is the idiopathic form & these people commonly have worse neurologic issues later in life. There is the symptomatic form & these folks may have type 1 narcolepsy (lack a hormone known as orexin/hypocretin). In some, it's medication-induced. If he hasn't already, he should have a polysomnogram sleep study to evaluate this.

I played hockey at a high level and fought at a high level and it’s nothing to do with sports what he’s experiencing . There called “the zaps” , where you will be relaxing and suddenly you feel like you got hit with a strong jolt of electricity, you don’t have to be falling asleep you can be doing anything and get them randomly .. it’s most commonly caused by taking ssri’s over a long period of time , they aren’t a harmful side effect long term or anything like that , just extremely annoying , and sometimes will push people to stop taking their antidepressants once they find out that they are the cause of the “the zaps” which is something nobody should ever do without speaking with your prescribing doctor first.
