I love the old '70's police flared trousers with tunnel belt loops! Still had them in 87 when I joined, you could put ya trousers on without taking yer shoes off!

I remember watching this one at the time. Quite a shocker (to a nine-year-old). You can tell that the production team were trying to imitate "The Sweeney" by this point. The following episode was concerned with the inquest into the woman's death - also quite disturbing

Not sure the programme was imitating the sweeney by then as many of the episodes were still very tame violence wise and of course it was as always broadcast before the watershed. There were still many excellent episodes by the mid 70s but more than a few where little to nothing happened

The hairstyles! Never saw the like, even in CID, and I joined in 1976. Frightening just how amateurish the Police use of firearms was in those days. No such thing as shooting to disable..a "disabled" gunman can still shoot and kill others.

You are right, we would regularly go to armed robberies with just the 'ole balsa wood staff! I swapped my lightweight one for an 'ole heavy staff when an old sweat retired!

This episode is fairly similar to the "Softly Softly : Task Force" episode "Marksman". Even down to the loony gun nut threatening a woman and the "issue arms" scene. Though Fred Render is distraught rather than actively nauseous. "Marksman" was also written by Allan Prior, but I don't suppose he was too bothered about recycling his stuff after 5 years.

Oh My God. The anti gun culture didn't give the cops an even chance against armed villains. Coppers have to get an act from House of Lords to get a gun issued. Marksmen issued Lee Enfield rifles with only 5 rounds. Officers told they can only shoot to disable.

i like the original theme tune from the black and white era even the early 70s version was better than the arrangement for this series 10. was awful. neighbours found a way to update itself to complete with home and away. corrie did with eastenders. and emeerdale morphing itself into a new incarnation so far removed from emmerdale farm. crossroads was one of the few to fail. z cars could find a way to moderise itself. but not doing a copycat of the sweeney. the sweeney was butch cassidy and sundance put to a english setting even the professionals reused and recycled starsky and hutch scripts but put them in a spy setting. and did a better job with the plots.

Theme tune done by Steeleye Span. Their lead singer was Maddy Prior, the daughter of the writer of this episode. Remarkable coincidence, as they say.
