+Jack Johnston I tried to get them to Z but something unexpectedly happened. They're very light for a planar, and have a pretty well balanced signature that still sounds quite musical. Kinda like a more refined HE-500 with a touch less bass. I'd highly recommend trying them if you can, they're probably a bit overpriced, but everything in that price bracket is, diminishing returns hits hard

Firstly the R70x is the most un-Audio Technica in terms of sound signature that most who are familiar with the brand know. I think the Sennheiser HD600 was first and foremost *the benchmark for neutrality and then came along the Hifiman HE400S and Audio Technica R70x ( roughly all 3 are at the same price point ). Full stock version - HE400S is the most neutral with very good detail/sound stage -- HD600 a bit more bass/narrower sound stage ( as compared to HE400S ) -- R70x again more bass/low end and just slightly narrower sound stage than HD600. Honestly really loving size/weight/build/correct amount of clamping force and headband ( close distance to head ) of R70x.. you can actually use them outdoors without looking obnoxious. Another great review there Z and Z's cat.

I just auditioned both and honestly I was surprised by how strongly I felt about it. They do share a similar sound-signature, but I felt the R70X's _just_ bested the HD600's on most counts. The bass felt both more extended and more natural, the high's a little less present but again more natural to my ears. The soundstage feels slightly closer to the ear, but I found the effect pleasing, and it seems to help the transient response, the HD600's felt more muddled somehow despite the (very slight) extra high end. I also found the R70X's more comfortable (I have small ears), they're incredibly light, almost disconcertingly so at first, but I came to really appreciate it. They felt more delicate than the HD600's and probably less impervious to knocks/drops. I would take them over the HD600's both for accuracy when it comes to mixing (the low end in particular will likely translate better), and for music listening. These seemed to me to be the first headphone I've heard which successfully mirrors what the HD600's/650's does so well, at a comparable price point, but actually improves on them in a couple of meaningful ways.

So I got these instead of the HD600 for two reasons. The first is that I tried these at a local music store and was blown away. The second is that they were less expensive than the HD600. The clamp is easily adjusted by simply bending the headband, and I think I've got it perfectly adjusted. I barely feel them when they're on my head, but they still feel and sound a lot closer than the AD900x. Thanks for the awesome review. It solidified my decision to blow a big chunk of cash on headphones, and I couldn't be happier.

I have a pair of the R70X, was checking them against the sound of my Adam A7x monitors in my project studio and I had to check a couple times to make sure my Adams were not playing in the background, very nice sound, lighter than my AKG headset and sound much better overall, similar in sound to my Adam monitors. These are fairly honest headphones and I would recommend them for the price. Could absolutely work on mixes with these cans.

I totally agree with you although I only tried both for less than an hour. Sennheiser is slightly more detailed in the highs. But I think the r70x sounds more natural with some more bass. And above all I think the r70x floats on the head, it feels like there is NO headphone and the sound comes from anywhere (in a good way). While on the Sennheiser, you feel the weight of the pads and it removes sound immersion. I would pick the r70x for my everyday headphone.

I've had these for three years now and am very happy with them. I ended up replacing the pads with Shure HPAEC1540 (~$40) and it just brought the comfort level to a max. I have a very small head and ears, and just love how these headphones fit. Clamping force is perfect, and they stay on the head so easily because of the lightweight. I actually wear these when I go rollerblading with ease. If you aren't going to be sweating all over them, they will work great for being somewhat active. A few months back I got the MrSpeakers Aeon Flow Closed, as well as paired it with the IFI micro idsd black label, after listening to a pair of closed back beyerdynamics and wanted to get that more intimate sound experience. What I will say is that these are over twice as expensive as the AT R70x, and sound signature likes/dislikes aside, I think the level of performance you get in the R70x along with the benefits of being cheaper and lighter (that I feel I don't have to handle them like they are made of glass), make these great value. I also got them on sale for around 250. Just get these and you will not be disappointed. They do not bleed sound despite being labeled OPEN, so they can work well if you want to listen next to other people and not have them hear the music.

I compared the R70X with the A700X, m50x, m40x (all audiotechnica) and the Shure srh 840(the rest there were irelevant to my ears). I needed a pair of closed cans. Exept for the R70X which are opened cans but i added them cuz they had gread sound stage (big fan of soundstage). My clasification: R70X, Shure 840, m40x last m50x. Oh i forgot something? Yea the A700X because they were the last ones and simply BLEW my mind, almost identical soundstage(even better than R70X) sound as clear maybe better than the Shure 840 but not as neutral(very warm). But wait? a700x is a pair of closed cans? Why did they sound so good to me?Why did they have better imaging and soundstage than the R70X???? I don't know the internet has little to no reviews of the A700X. Is it because they were really easy to power? I mean I put them directly in my Redmi note 3 Pro Smartphone and they were like crazy loud. In short they did everything better than the rest and even my friends agreed(2 different friends other songs and tastes in music). Why are they discontinuing them now? I can't even buy them, they are 99$ on amazon but they won't ship in Europe(here they are 300$).

I also love the r70x, srh840 so much. But unlike Z I kind of like the m50 which in spite of the too present bass and not so detailed higher frequencies, sound very natural. I do not like the 40's which sound shifted towards the highs

Hey, i got now both Headphones here, the HD 600 and the r70x. Like you sayd, the HD 600 has a (little) bit more trebles and less bass. I find the HD 600 has clearly heard more trebles. Few days ago i was by an ear specialist who cleans my ears, since i was there i here everything extremly harsh and high. I really can hear the difference very good, also when i would hear the two headphones on different days. The first reaction let me think that the HD 600 sounds a bit better, but i personaly cant relax as good to music like with the r70x :) I think i keep them both, because i cant listen to 2000x or akg 701 or DT880, because the trebles of them makes my ear bleeding. I can use the HD 600 for some classic and the r70x as an alrounder. Only my preferences and taste :) Thanks for your video!

idk if anyone said b4, but I'd guess the plug/jack design is intended to provide stress resistance. 1/8 are crap, after all. you want to take the stress off of the contact jack/ plug, which they seem to do using a larger plastic, locking area that takes the strain off the connector. I wish there was a standard for 1/8 stress-relieving connectors. People rightly complain about the failures of the jacks in all sorts of devices.

The biggest advantage of the HD600's, other than being made to fit on a human head, is that you can take them apart and put them back together in 60 seconds without using any tools, and replace every part on them without any problem, at a fair price, unlike Audio Technica who will charge you a million dollars to replace a busted driver or a screwed up cable, that is IF you manage to get in contact with them at all. Not that you have to do that often on HD600's, because they're incredibly reliable and solid. I recently got a pair of HD600's made in 1997, they still sound like the ones I bought in 2013. Most headphones disintegrate in that time. HD600's are a classic headphone for a reason, you simply can't go wrong with them, and when you buy them, you know you have something reliable that will always serve you well and you'll probably have it for the rest of your life because it's simply too good to sell. They've been around for more than 20 years, and their basic driver and baffle design has been around for more than 30 years. That's proper engineering when you manage to make a product that stays on the market almost completely unchanged for decades, and only 20-30 years in the future similar products appear that can even compete with it in a few aspects, but still don't beat as an overall great product.

The Audio Technica blow. Just tried them. Build quality is garage. Pure garbage. The Sennheisers are much better. Still not my fav sound, but they are built much better and much better sound for the cost.

Guys, don't forget R70X are untypical AudioTechnicas - unlike the rest of them, these have 470Ω impedance. You need a good amp to sound best. If you wish to listen from your portable devices, consider any other AudioTechnica model.

Some people have said that the R70x are not as refined as HD600 in the mids and treble. Also, any grain?
@OptLab
3 жыл бұрын
I tested both in a shop. Sennheiser is more detailed in the highs. I am not sure about the mids But I think the r70x sounds more natural with some more bass. And above all I think the r70x floats on the head, it feels like there is NO headphone and the sound comes from anywhere (in a good way). You cannot tell if something sounds in your room or from the headphone. While on the Sennheiser, you feel the weight of the pads and it removes sound immersion. With the 600, you can identify what comes out from your headphone or from your environnment I would pick the r70x for my everyday headphone, it feels like a transparent layer of sound. Sadly I can't afford it yet.

Z Reviews Thank you!!!! Listened to almost all of them. The headphones sound awesome. One quick question, how do I properly connect my Oppo HA-2 to my iPhone? I've been listening to the HA-2 connected to my PC but now I want to try it on my phone. I changed it to port A on the HA-2 just like it says on the manual. But do I plug my headphones into the HA-2 still or just into the iPhone? I've tried both and oddly enough with the HA-2 it sounds a lot quieter than it did when connected to my PC. And without the HA-2 connected to the iPhone it sounds louder and better with just the iPhone. That doesn't seem right.

you got me interested in superlux and I'd like to see what you think about their hd 330s
@Fuogor
8 жыл бұрын
+superdupercake I'm no Zeos, but the HD330s were my babies for four years. Tight clamp, but it's remedied by bending back the headband until it's loose enough. The pads are "eh". I was fine with them, but then again I never had any more comfortable cans to compare them to (until Zeos showed my the HM5s) but you can get Beyerdynamic velours to put on them. Sound is fairly neutral, but not bass-heavy. Not bassless, just not bass forward. Good soundstage being semi-open, thick coiled cable with a sturdy 3.5mm cable. I came from HD681s, and I definitely noticed that the sharp, painful highs of the 681s was gone in the 330s. Much, much more sane treble. I find no fault in their sound, but I can't live without the HM5 pads now (which I haven't succeeded in putting on the 330s). I got them for about $60 if I recall correctly, and it was pure value. The only issue I have with them after four years is comfort, but they're by no means impossible to wear for eight hours at a time or longer.

I don't understand why only you, and like 2 others on KZitem recommend these. Everyone else thinks they don't stand up to the Sennheisers. I have both the 600 and R70X, and I clearly prefer the R70x after a pad swap. I use the Brainwavz XL Perforated leather pads, increased the soundstage to more than the HD600, plus extends the high end and low end. And I also like them better than the Sundara, which will make some people mad, lol.
@aeremi

Hello. Wanna ask if you compared them with stock pads. How big is the difference or improvement? I'm looking to replace my sunken in stock pads on my old R70X so I'll appreciate your advice ^^ With the stock pads imo, I do like the sound, but i find the mids just a _tad_ bit forward relative to the tame bass and treble.
@divinecurrent9053
3 жыл бұрын
@@aeremi Hello, yes I have compared them with the stock pads. Stock does sound a bit mid forward to me as well, and are very similar to my 58X actually. What the Brainwavz pads do mostly is increase the soundstage and image size, and have a pretty large difference in the treble clarity. Stuff just sounds more open and airy to me with those pads, yet with zero harshness, while the stock pads are smaller and therefore have a more closed in and small soundstage with less treble air. Getting good bass with the Brainwavz pads requires a good seal, but it's about the same bass amount as the stock pads, perhaps a little more mid-bass. I really can't go back to stock after trying the XL pads, just personal preference.
@aeremi

@@divinecurrent9053 Your descriptions in sound changes match exactly what I'm aiming for. I'll order the Brainwavz Hybrid XL when I get the chance. Thanks :) Oh and you mentioned that you like them more than the Sundara? Care to elaborate? I tested the Sundara back then. I liked them a lot, mayyybe a tad bit bright for me
@divinecurrent9053
3 жыл бұрын
@@aeremi I first really liked the Sundara before trying the R70x, although they were a little bright I used some EQ and they served me for a while. But then when I tried the R70x with the XL pads, they actually sounded cleaner and less harsh in the highs than the Sundara, plus they are much more comfortable. I am also not a fan of the Sundara headband. By the way, I have tried normal sized hybrid round Brainwavz pads with the R70x, I didn't like it as much as the PU perforated leather XL ones. However, the XL Hybrids may sound completely different, I only tried the normal size ones.

Soo funny to see that your main gripes are just the same as mine. I am no Dumbo elephant ear guy, and the cans are f.e.a.t.h.e.r.l.i.g.h.t - but still, after listening/composing for hours - I can feel it on the tips of my auricle. And I don't see the fucking point? Why? Why couldn't they just have made them a tad bit bigger, like the fidelio X1/X2s that are still round, but princess Leia - like huge, and fits over the ear. But they do allow me to mix with little correction by speakers. SO FRUSTRATING. What replacement pads would fit? I love the look, the weight and the sound.
@x-techgaming

No soundstage? What a waste, for music and games :( By changing to pads that do not have the same contour and thickness, you are also changing the headphone sound, likely for the worse. Big, fat, fluffy pads = worst thing you can do for audio quality.

Hello...3 years later...lol Anyway..I do audio mixing...and I bought proudly in 2013 a pair of AKG K702..which at the time cleaned up as hell my ears...impressive...was very happy ..cos I needed an open back headphones for mixing..the closed ones are suited for recording...than I bought an AT ATH-M40X...and wow;...as closed back set beat easily the AKG and demonstrated their serious timbre problems...the AKG suddenly sounded imbalanced with...sure rounded bass but not that much..the worst is the retired midrange and the metallic global sound...specially above 1Khz.. so my AT became my reference their are not that much neutral but the closet set to an original source....very very accurate for mixing audio...their problem is the narrowed stage....and a little add on the low midrange...nothing disturbing and I get used to that..and the most important thing they are that close to my Yamaha's HS7....very very close timbre..yeah both from Nippon genius....which made the AKG sounding very weird and out of balance.. today I heard about the R7x which is based apparently on the ATH-M70...is this real...I'm talking here specially about timbre and overall frequency balance...would like to hear it from you... cause I never liked anything from Sennheiser ...it's a question of ear's taste. thanks...
