Well explained. It would be nice if you could protect the bank from changes, so it behaved more like the old U1/U2 settings. This comes in handy for two situations: first, you accidentally hit something, and want to be certain you're back to your presets. Second, your usual presets aren't working, and you need to make a temporary shift-- I do a lot of lunar photography, and had a shot where clouds forced me to jack the ISO. I wound up getting a great shot, but it would be easy in the excitement to forget that I shoved the ISO from 400 to 6400 and I need to reset it before my next shoot. This seems like a relatively easy software change, hopefully Nikon's watching and picks it up. On the other hand, it looks like this has been an issue for 19 years, so it's clearly not a priority for them.

Ciao Joseph, thanks for give a hint to my brain to start to use banks. I started to manipulate the system and I realised that , to add something to your video, you can do the same for the Custom Bank menu. Setting my choices in the B bank, for example, and adding at the "i" menu the Custom setting bank selection, added to the Shooting menu bank, I can have a much more expanded mixed choices of pre settings. For example, from the "i" menu I can pick my choices to use the photoshoot Bank A, and choose maybe the Bank B Custom Bank, for the AF that I prefer. Or B - B and so on. That great option of the Extended Menu furthermore, allow the system to memorize your last (in M mode so far I know) shutter time/aperture. And this is seriously great, because if you set for example the Custom settings Bank B for bird in flight, and you are doing birds on the perch, you can switch from maybe the Custom Setting Bank A ,that was with a low shutter speed and AF lock dedicated, to immediately have the z9 ready to get shots at a faster shutter speed and the favourite AF lock for it. Ciao Simone

Hi Joseph.. You are covering some great topics here for all users including, I notice, some Non-Nikon users. I have been a Nikon user for almost 50 years and in many ways the Z system is a dream come true and it has lifted my enthusiasm to a new level. From viewing the comments you are drawing in a lot of sensible users so I have no doubt your site will quickly become essential viewing for thousands of users. These are complex units so we all benefit from exchange of knowledge. For other high grade Nikon knowledge I also watch Thom Hogan, (DSLR by Thom), Matt Irwin, UKs Nikon Rep Ricci, Matt Granger. In my view you can certainly consider yourself up there with the best. So congratulations once again on your excellent site and fantastic selection of topics as they are generally hard to find in one place, you have certainly hit a sweet spot of essential tips.

There are a couple of annoying things about these banks. First, the settings are not sticky, meaning that if you are in say Bank A and change any setting to suite the shot, that setting overrides what you originally set and it becomes the new default. Nikon really needs to fix that. When you turn the camera off, it needs to revert to the settings that you initially set as default. And, there is a known bug specifically in the shutter speed settings. If you change that in any Bank, it changes shutter speed in all banks. That issue has already been sent up the food chain and should be fixed in the next firmware release. Cheers

I shoot landscapes and wildlife as a hobby; hope to someday have the Z9. One issue for me is that both of my interests are often at the same physical location; things can change quickly. With the Z9 set up for those scenarios in different shooting menu banks, what is the fastest way to switch between them?

I have the same question. On previous cameras, you can just quickly turn the top dial to change between settings, C1, C2, C3 etc. Now with this professional camera, you have to click on the iMenu, click on the Shooting Bank icon, and then click on the memory bank required. That's 3 clicks! A pity Nikon couldn't at least let you assign this function to a hard button and then you just press the button to change custom setting banks (scroll through) this would be faster.

Joe, glad you got your Z9 (I'm still waiting and although I ordered day one, expect to be waiting). That said, I believe your discussion of banks could have been a bit more organized and descriptive. If memory serves me correctly, the bank will save the last setting you have on the camera when using that bank and turn it off (i.e. if you change from 3D to Group AF and then turn the camera off it will reset that bank default). I thought I read a bit back that the extended menu settings change across all banks (is that true?) and what is exactly contained in the "extended" menu? I suppose banks would be helpful if you shoot the same way every time you turn your camera on in lets say "Portrait", but I've never used them (banks) and found them more confusing than helpful. Need more specific examples rather than you talking though examples but not showing how changes to your shooting profile would change in the bank after turning off the camera.

HI - thank you for your feedback - yes, you are correct, making a change in a shooting bank will keep that change. The idea is that you do not change much. I do cover the extended settings in the video : The additional settings stored in extended banks for use in photo mode are: shooting mode, shutter speed (modes S and M only), aperture (modes A and M only), and flash mode. The additional settings stored in extended banks for use in video mode are: shooting mode, shutter speed (mode M only), and aperture (modes A and M only). Hope this helps.

@dance2jam: I'm still learning the Z9 nuances, but the detailed Nikon manual states that you can easily restore the default settings for a shooting bank. I've read this several times and it seems that "default" means the settings that you set for a particular bank (and not the general default settings on the camera, in general). At some point I'll test it. I'm going to very respectfully disagree with Mr. Nuzzo's statement that "The idea is that you do not change much." I think the extended menu inserts some flexibility in using the banks. I kept asking myself why is there a need for extended menu banks in the first place (and I'm not saying that I know!). But the detailed Z9 manual says, on pg. 493, that changes made to settings in one shooting menu banks don't apply to other banks -- but changes made to extended menu banks apply to all banks (I'm discussing photos, not video). My thought was, wait, aren't the banks supposed to be more focused in their settings? Why would a change in one change the others? When you look at pg. 496 of the manual, it says that if you select "ON" for extended menu banks then changes in exposure (shooting mode (P,S,A,M), shutter speed, aperture, and flash) are stored in the bank currently selected and will be recalled next time that bank is selected. If you select "OFF" for extended menu, then the shooting, shutter, aperture that were in effect before "ON" was selected are restored. So, lets say select "ON" for extended men; then choose bank A; then change your aperture; then turn off your camera (or switch to another bank); turn your camera back on and go to bank A, bank A should still be using your changed aperture. If I'm right about this (and maybe I'm not!), one of my questions is, assuming I don't reset back to the default settings of bank A (see pg. 495), the aperture change is "permanent" as long as I have "ON" selected. And if I turn it off, it essentially returns to my default setting anyway? Any, Mr. Nuzzo has a lot more experience with flagship Nikons than I do, so I defer in advance to his expertise :-) (and I did hit the subscribe button)

@@wirelessg14 I very much appreciate you taking the time and energy to share your current experience. I was notified that my Z9 will arrive Wednesday. That said, the problem I was having with banks were on the D850 and trying to sort out when settings were applied globally and when they are specific. When and whether they would change to the last setting used in the bank, or revert back to the initial setting of the bank. etc. You get the drift. I found the manual on the D850 fairly enigmatic and I'm not one to get confused much. I really appreciate you chiming in. I often challenge some of the best in my field but it is always to drive a discussion for better understanding and is a win-win. By teaching me, you help yourself. So, THANK YOU again. Much appreciated. I will test it out myself as well. On the D850 you then have 4 "Custom Shooting Banks" A, B, C, D that reportedly do not have anything to do with the other banks. I'm going to take a deep dive into this over the next week. I'll let you know what I find out.

I have a question. I use the u1, u2, u3 on my z6iis. I used them specifically in video mode. U1 would be 4K at 24 fps and u2 4K 60 fps and so on. To set them up And then would copy my settings in each menu. The best thing about using u1, u2 and u3, is that if I toggle between them not only are each frame rate set, but my shutter speeds to match my frame rates are automatically set as well. I don’t have to fuss with them. So my question is, I have set my shooting banks on my z9 a, b, c, to have various frame rates, but setting my shutter speeds in each a, b, or c doesn’t seem to stay set. Any thoughts on this? I was hoping to have the a, b, c similar to the u1 and so forth. I have tried various methods and the only thing to stay consistent are my menus, profiles and frame rates for video recording. My f stop and shutter speed and iso all change and I can’t get them to stay set in each menu. I need to dive deeper into the menu but I was hoping to have all my cameras to be set up the same way. Then I don’t fiddle with things. Haha

Agree...I don't know that is possible at all. Ideally, Nikon should allow you to set up a custom control button that would let you choose one of your programmed photobanks (ie B) so that while shooting with that button pressed you get photobank B settings (shutter speed, aperature, ISO, etc.) but without pressing you get photobank A for example. This would be ideal is fast action settings like bird photography or sports where subjects quickly change from static to moving and you would want to adjust your settings rapidly. I use a D500 that uses photobanks as well, and this is not an available feature, so please let me know if this has been updated with the Z9. Thanks!!

It is so god-awful bad and ridiculous, I'm considering ditching my Nikon system for another brand. The only thing worse would be for Nikon to produce a lens foot that doesn't utilize the Arca-Swiss standard. Doh!
