When Matt takes Jim’s phone, he looks like he went into dad mode: “I gave you a chance to put it away but now, it’s mine. You’ll get it back when the interview is over.”

The play was a sign of the times. Like all "People" it is one small snap shot of one small part of the LGTBIQ experience in 1968. The themes however of looking for love and acceptance amongst newly created "family" self loathing, internalized homophobia, racism, patriarchy are still relevant today. I prefer the original as it IS LITERALLY a snap shot of Gay life in New York 1968. I can imagine if this play was set in Alabama with an all Black gay cast it would be completely different. Just waiting to see a play set in this time from a non white perspective. That would be amazing! Mr Tyler??? Anyone? :)

well he didn't quite pull off not sounding like a jerk. how could it have possibly been considered outdated in 1970? reductive? in 1970 stonewall didn't solve all the problems in one night. the movement had barely begun. not relevant? it helped paved the way for his generation to work as out actors. older gays are happy that younger gays have it easier, but younger gays need to understand what it took for it to be that way. part of that is recognizing and appreciating the history. In addition, without a doubt, there are still versions of those characters living in current day. There are still people in faux marriages, or suffering in fear and silence, afraid of the truth. I'm so glad he took the part. He was the fantastic, but the reasons he waffled are truly disappointing. It seems from what he said that the only reason he took the part is so he wouldn't miss out on the ensemble. I'm not really convinced he truly finds it to be anything good.

Thank you! Stonewall was a literal newspaper blurb in 1969, and was mostly forgotten by 1970. Yes, it spawned the first pride parade/protest the following year, but that doesn't automatically make Boys In The Band reductive or homophobic. I agree that Boys In The Band is just as relevant today as it was in 1968. There may not be as many gay men suffering in silence/sham marriages as there were back then, but to assume that everybody gleefully jumps out of the closet in 2022 is lazy thinking, at best. Boys In The Band is a very important piece of LGBT history.

I grew up with the original movie therefore I have little patience for many choices of the actors of the new one on Netflix. The most catastrophic of all is thinking that Jim Parsons could be the central focus of the story. His performance is just so lame and uncharismatic. It still baffles me how Mart Crowley could consent to his presence. Jim Parsons was PERFECT for Big Bang but I am afraid his range terminates there. Sorry. Larry was also of much higher calibre in the old movie. Andrew Rennels? Too cheap for this. Sadly another big Fiasco is the Bernard character. Michael Benjamin is miles away from the chic, beauty and elegance of the original actor. Now the gain of the new production are certainly Matt Bomer who has star quality and he is sublime as Donald, as well as Tuc Watkins who has the authority and the spirituality for such a lynch-pin character as Hank. But in a whole I enjoy to watch the new version, even if I keep it a bit as a background while doing other stuff.
