My son Shakur has just commented that Zakir Hussain's tabla playing sounded like a herd of wildebeest coming past. Thanks for your brilliance, maestro...

@irfankhan69 Zakir bhai has played with more maestros than I can count. And as for solos, my friend, you can not make a comment like "solo is in fact is very easy as u don't need to follow some one". Since when was "following" desirable. In a solo, the artist can play compositions so much more complex than what he/she would plays in accompaniment. The entire essence of Tabla is exemplified during a solo. Accompaniment is good, but the true test in Tabla is when you perform a solo.

I truly wish for a better quality video. The sound here is fine, and the preformance is clearly stunning. But I would appreciate it even more if I could see the Maestro's fingers doing their work. Anyway, 5/5 for sharing, thanks. :-)

@yjvnz If you were replying to ifrankhan69, than I certainly agree with YOU in comparison to what he is saying. The art of solo is incomparable.

have you heard a single Jugalbandi piece of his? he can make the tabla sound like any instrument. Maybe you should hear some of his Fusion pieces. it is easy to keep Theka and play some fancy things but the true test is merging your instrument with the other ones, an art only he can do. Maybe you should listen to some of his great albums rather than giving ignorant biased views.
@irfankhan69

he is very good solo tabla player....but the real test is when u play with some classical music ustad like ustad salamat ali khan or fateh ali khan...thats when ur skills are tested/challenged to the limit.....solo is in fact very easy as u don't need to follow some one....anyways....his solo skills r no doubt one of the best in the world.
@irfankhan69

my dear...have u heard late ustad shaukat hussain???? to me Solo is not so tough...the toughest of all is when u play tabla with an ustad like ustad fateh ali khan, ustad salamat ali khan or Roshan ara begum.....it is then when ur real skill ans command is judged....anyways zakir hussian is also very good....but i haven't seen him yet playing with a maestro.

Say what? As a percussionist who has played Congas, Bata and Kit for 30 years I have no idea wqhere tou are coming from with that statement. "It does not have the power of a real drum". Take the cotton out of your ears and put it in your mouth. I have done 2 shows w/ Zakir and have rarely met a more humble musician and warm human being.

Zakir's mastery of time is so profound that he bends it to his will, probably because his hands move so close to relativistic light speeds. You can see him actually slip in and out of our time stream at 0:39-0:40. I want to be near him during the 2012 Eschaton. Ha ha ha.

hariprasad chaurasia, shiv kumar sharma, pt jasraj, ravi shankar, hariharan, john mclaughlin, beca fleck, jan garbarek are not maestros? is only keeping theka and making the artist enough for u? it is clear that you are not someone who has learnt tabla as you have no respect for the instrument.

It's a pretty crappy video, but the sound is great. I saw him live once in 1985. He was incredible, and I was in a trance by the end of the night. It's pretty amazing that one person can make the sounds he makes.

The Benaras style is more powerful, and the Delhi style is more subtle and delicate, with other styles falling in between. So maybe you'd enjoy checking out the Benaras gharana players, or even pakhawaj / mridangam. Also, you can't really compare tabla to a drum set. It is more comparable to a bass guitar, or some melodic instrument. A bass guitarist can play tabla repertoire more accurately than a drummer, who have no ringing bass notes and who can't play gamaki patterns.

@yjvnz I agree to a small extent because I truly believe that the art of mastering the classical repertoire of Tabla supersedes any fusion performance. Fusion is good, but the science and technique behind it is nominal in comparison to classical Tabla. Classical Tabla is the true test in my opinion. It is not merely keeping theka and playing a few fancy things, it is controlling laya, calculating tihais, interjecting impromptu kaidas etc. and not to mention, improvising it all.
