That's probably the most accomplished and technical solo that's ever been played along to a rock tune. Basically, BEST SOLO EVER!

Ye Gods! Steve completely crawls into his guitar and then they do some sort of acrobatics act together! Or something. (LOL.) Absotively, posilutely one of the wildest solos on Teh Interwebs! (It's a small miracle Steve didn't keel over afterwards!) LOUDLY RECOMMENDED! (11.5 points out of 10.)

OMG. OMG. I love the story steve tells about being a young man and auditioning for franks musical troupe. frank kept making steve play all this weird crazy difficult nearly impossible to play stuff. I can see frank now just smiling at a 21 yr old steve vai and telling him he is in the band. steve vai is so accomplished and has such great command of his instrument. he is simply one of the greatest ever.

Yep, Frank liked to credit him as the "Stunt guitarist" lol. Franks tough mentoring served Vai very well and honed an already skilled young musician into the absolute beast that he is today. Actually Dweezil too. Dweez is a pretty astonishing guitarist as well.

Funny, I only clicked on this because the solo Zappa played on this track is one of my all time favourites. Can’t say I’m a massive Steve Vai fan…but I have to concede he makes a pretty decent fist of it 😂 I literally don’t even know what he’s doing for 95% of the solo, I don’t have any words to describe it, no wonder Zappa called him a stunt guitarist, off the scale completely!

I always thought that it was Steve, since Zappa was often seen with his Gibson SG. It sounds like there is some floyd rose use in action and since Steve is often associated with Frank Zappa.

+Dorian Earnest Overnite Sensation came out in 1973. Steve Vai was born in 1960. It is certain he didn't play the original guitar solo at 13 years old.

As a child, Dweezil would wake up in the middle of the night, and go down stairs to his fathers studio, where his guitar-legend-Dad, Frank, Steve Vai, and Eddie VanHalen were Jamming, to shout. "Shut the fuck up.... I'm trying to sleep!!!" Later in life, he would become a student of those noise-makers, and become a fucking guitar-force to be reckoned with.

you gotta love how Steve does that ridiculous lick at around 4:21 where he's shifting his anchor note back and forth stupidly fast and then after nailing that decides to take a moment and indulge himself with some really naughty notes. And just look at the faces he makes around 4:26, he knows exactly how nasty those notes are. What a legend.

Ow yeah, the groove is killer allright (starting at 2:59), very few songs that rock so hard. On all Zomby Woof recordings, it is slightly different, but always incredibly groovy. Great rhythm guitar too.

I caught this show in Minneapolis that spring of 2015. This song was played almost verbatim to this one. Terry Bozzio's solo on "The Black Page" was off the charts and Steve was on stage watching. Most of us were on the edge of our seats. Napoleon Murphy Brock still had it. Into the stratosphere!!

I finally convinced my brother to give Zappa a chance with this song. Its got to that dirty zappa groove and then you go and put a steve vai solo over it that makes you realize how a whammy bar is supposed to be used and he was sold haha

I was at this Portland show, December 21, 2006. In the upper deck there somewhere. One of the most memorable shows I've ever witnessed, and this solo f**kin' lifted me off the ground a couple inches I swear! If you ever get a chance to see Dweezil and his amazing cohorts do a ZPZ show, do NOT miss it!

How wonderful. There's Stevie Vai playing onstage, with Zappa's son, Dweez, as the "stunt guitarist" , he played with Dweezils Dad. I presume the comment " music by numbers" was a play on words for " murder by number" that Zap did live with "Mr. Sting" . This, a compliment. Ta very much.

And Napoleon fucks it up at the end! I always do that when my friends' band do "Whipping Post". They play the Allman Brothers version and I do the Zappa. So there's always me going "Some!" in complete silence before the band come back in. I've done it so often that I have to be counted in now.

No man has collaborated with a greater number of world-class guitarists (George, Vai, Willis, Belew, Kennealy, Dweezil too :)) and world-class drummers/percussionists (Dunbar, Tripp, Thompson, Humphreys, Bozzio, Colaiuta, Wackerman, Mann, Underwood) than Zappa.

Joe Travers is a beast on drums. This must have been when Joe liked and got along with Dweezil because two years ago, when I saw Joe and band perform Zappa at The Baked Potato, he absolutely refused to have a picture taken of me and him because I had a "TEAM DWEEZIL" Tshirt on. He wasn't nice Because of my shirt either. And to think Joe is in charge of Frank's vault. It should be Dweezil. Such is life.
