Note to self: remember 'Zaxxon' next time I play Scrabble and get stuck with the Z and X tiles (plus a blank cause there's only one X). That's 21 points off the bat, not taking bonuses into account. Even better would be 'Zaxxonish' (adjective: something resembling or possessing qualities of Zaxxon) - if someone has already played 'is' you can play the remaining letters and get the 50 point bonus for playing all 7 of your tiles.

In the same way that many of the best arcade conversions on the Famicom involved tweaking the game to varying degrees to alter the experience with a home environment in mind (Commando, Section Z, etc), maybe Zaxxon's extended loop before encountering the boss was an early fumbling attempt by Sega to make the game a little "more" for the home version?

Zaxxon was one of my favourite games as a kid, but I mostly played the excellent port on the Tandy CoCo, which omitted a lot of the cosmetic detail from the levels (fortresses were just a uniform blue floor and a static striped back wall) but in doing so was able to move the gameplay-significant items (enemies, walls, forcefields, etc) extremely smoothly, with none of the choppiness of other ports.

First comment of mine on your really great channel. This episode covering my very favorite SG-1000 game, Zaxxon, has a real great review on it as well! Congrats. But I think there are two things to notice about it and weren't mentioned. One is the advantage of a beautiful soundtrack for the game, considering the hardware limitations, and an advantage towards the arcade original - which has great sound design, though. Another thing is that Zaxxon had a follow-up (or a reiteration) in the Sega Mark III/Master System, which is Zaxxon 3D (whose soundtrack is also great, by the way). Just those two observations... As I can see, you're arriving near to my favorite part of the story: the transformation of the SG-1000 into Master System (considering that it touches my Brazilian side). Keep up the great work!

It's long seemed odd to me that Zaxxon so quickly became a forgotten Sega property. It was a worldwide hit and one of the early pillars of Sega's success. But after this release they put out Zaxxon 3D in 1987, and that was it. There was a dreadful 32-X game that was rebranded as a Zaxxon title, but only in the US. Flicky seems to be the only pre-Space Harrier Sega property that has retained any presence in ongoing recensions of the Sega canon, and that's likely based on its Sonic connection alone.

I played Zaxxon on the C64, my parents banned me from playing it after I mentioned the game to them and presumably pronounced it "Sexxon". Took me a few years to figure out what that was about. Now I want to look up what that version was like compared to the arcade.

Zaxxon is the name of the enemy robot in the English Atari 2600 manual. The English arcade manual never says what "Zaxxon" is; your ship is simply "attack-shuttle" while the big robot is simply "robot". I don't know what other ports considered to be "Zaxxon", or even the various Japanese manuals.
@PaulSoth
3 жыл бұрын
I know that Zaxxon was used as the name of the robot in various licensed materials as well in the US, such as the board game. I suppose someone would need to check Japanese promotional materials to get the proper story.
@BainesMkII
3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulSoth I found *one* English manual that refers to the ship as Zaxxon, the manual for "Zaxxon 3-D" for the Master System. All the arcade material I found, the English operator manuals, flyers, Japanese flyers, the US commercial (yes, the arcade game had a TV commercial), none of it names any object as "Zaxxon". The English manual for "Super Zaxxon" (which replaces the robot with dragons) simply sticks "Super Zaxxon" at the front of everything except the ship, can't tell if it is labeling the enemy or just reinforcing the game name.

I always imagine Zaxxon as being earlier by a couple of years, I wonder why I have that impression. I'm sure I heard about it before Xevious at least. It looks like SG 1000 also brings in the arcade sequel's tunnel, which replaced the space section. I wonder, if you get far enough, will you face the Dragon? My favorite fact about Zaxxon is that we found out, much later, that it was implemented by Ikegami Tsushinki, the people who programmed (but didn't design) Nintendo's Donkey Kong, making it kind of like a sibling. (I have not verified this as of this writing. I _think_ it's correct, so please don't quote me from here.)
@rodneylives
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Wikipedia at least claims Zaxxon came out in 1981, which jibes better with my recollection. Maybe you had some search confusion with Super Zaxxon (which had the tunnel and dragon)? Not that you should blindly take Wikipedia's word for it, I've been trying to track down a release order for Atari arcade games and sometimes I've found it off by a full year. (And, you might be talking about Japaness release dates, where Xevious may have come out a bit earlier, relative to Zaxxon, than it did in the US.)

I always wished there was a Mat Mania / Exciting Hour port besides the much too late and not still poor 7800 version. It was such a smooth playing and multi-faceted wraslin' game for the time, but it doesn't get much love today. Rope throws and dashes, turnbuckle moves, out of the ring action, context based directional move inputs, digitized speech 3 count and great art and animation, a crowd full of Easter eggs like ZZ Top and Darth Vader. The roster of opponents are great as well, a nice assortment contemporary wrestler knock offs that have their own unique moves and styles.

Trying to track the chronology of these shooters is not getting any easier. So Zaxxon is basically a spiritual sequel to Konami's Scramble. Interesting that the SG version of Zaxxon appears to flash the sprites after they've been shot. Huh. So Champion Wrestling uses the Super Godzilla method of move queues. Good thing my first wrestling game was Tecmo's highly competent Fire Pro Precursor, _Gekitō Pro Wrestling!! Tōkon Densetsu_ better known internationally simply as Tecmo World Wrestling.
@num488

So regarding Champion Wrestling, I believe the REAL inspiration was Technos Tag Team Wrestling. Given the menu commands to preform various techniques, your player character is the guy with long hair, the opposition in a mask, sounding familiar? I guess Sega Retro suggests "APOOOOH!" because it's a Sega property? Really Dump Matsumoto aka Pro Wrestling on Master System comes off as a proper successor to that.

@@JeremyParish you’re so good at it, though. It’s one of my favorite things about you: you don’t necessarily strike me as a big sports fan, but you always give relevant sports world citations when discussing a sports video game. You also approach them objectively and without the “I hate football” sort of attitude that prevents plenty of nerds from trying a sports title, regardless of its quality. The fact that I suspect you might actually be a sports fan is indicative of how well you present sports games. And then there’s wrestling. Same deal with the objective approach, but I’m reminded of your HAL Wrestling review and when you said, “I don’t know what makes a good wrestling game”.
