▼READ MORE BELOW▼ A friend recently asked if I’d help him complete work on a piano piece he liked very much, and, for want of a score, had commissioned a transcription of it. The work is Rachmaninov’s song “How Fair This Place” as specifically performed by Arcadi Volodos.
I am aware of two recordings of this arrangement on KZitem • Arcadi Volodos Plays a... • Rachmaninoff - Melodie...
When I printed the transcription and played through it, I was aware the faster passages were not notated accurately. My friend became stuck where recording and sheet music differed and asked if I could work out what Volodos was playing by ear and record the whole piece in an overhead keyboard video, at tempo and also slowly to work out the missing sections. (see follow-on video)
The MP3 is clearer than the video on KZitem, and as an arrangement, is a little more developed harmonically and the melody voicing is fuller and closer to the original song. So, for want of a full and accurate transcription to play from, made the arrangement featured in this video by mixing something I’ve heard and liked from both recordings, which has meant playing a number of passages by ear, so if you’re wondering, that’s the reason the sheet music differs occasionally from what you hear.
The owner of the transcription would like to offer it to you free - but wants me to stress it’s just a first draft, and not entirely accurate.

There is a possibly a new and better transcription on the way. I will keep you posted.
