Scientists believe that sharks first appeared in the ocean around 455 million years ago. In the present-day, there is a wide range of shark species, ranging from the small pygmy shark to the large whale shark. Three shark species live at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium: whitespotted bamboo shark, blacktip reef shark, and zebra shark.
Recently, the Zoo's Animal Health and Animal Care teams collaborated with the Georgia Aquarium and Ripley's Aquariums to put accelerometers on our female zebra sharks, Tala and Sheila. These accelerometers, which have since been removed after several weeks, collected essential data about our zebra sharks' behavior and how they use their habitat, which will help us better understand sharks in professional care and their wild counterparts. Watch our video to learn more about this fin-tastic project!
