Your comment for the Conquest 8x40 and the problem is exactly right. I bought one for a VERY good price some weeks ago without really testing it before. And it’s a fantastic bino IF the tight eyebox works for YOU. Sadly it does not for me. Already while wearing glasses I needed to extract the eyepieces to maximum and without glasses I need to hold the bino free about 1/2 cm in front of my eyebrows to avoid blackouts. Today I swapped it for the SFL 8x40 (also with a little discount) and I am really looking forward to test it in the upcoming vacation. First impression of the demonex in the shop was VERY promissing!

Stabilized bino are certainly interesting! We've been using/testing the Sig Zulu 6 and Kite APC stabilized binos for the last 6+ months, and the the stabilization certainly makes a massive difference. There are absolutely some compromises that go along with stabilized binoculars, though, which some folks will be OK with, and others not. The weight difference of these SFL and Zulu 6 is about 0.7 ounces, so not significant, but the stabilization is pretty amazing. The FOV is massively smaller and the low light performance not as good in the stabilized, but price point of the stabilized binoculars is much better like you said. Give and take! Hey there, Andrew! That's a great question, and one that's going to be difficult to answer since these weren't out when we tested those side by side, but I did have a chance to put these next to the Vortex Razor UHD(which was the optical leader in the $1500 class). I preferred these over the Vortex Razor UHD in everything but the lowest light situations. The massive weight and size savings of the SFL would push me to them for hunting purposes. However if you don't care about weight or size, and low light performance is the most important to you, the Razor UHD were a little better in low light. I did prefer the SFL in every other lighting situation though, so that combined with the minimal gain the Razor UHD give you in low light (its very minimal), I'd personally rank them above the Razor UHD overall, which would put them #1 in their respective price category. Hello there! Sorry for the slow reply...I missed this comment/question. Like I mentioned in the review, the FOV of the NL is certainly better, but I actually preferred the SFL in regards to contrast and resolution. When next to the NL, the image appeared more pleasant to my eyes, and in low light, I felt like the SFL provided better resolution and color contrast as well. The weight and size of the SFL is also a huge benefit vs the NL. I have not put them next to the Ultravid, but my guess is that they would fare very well. As for the 10x30 vs 10x40, I personally prefer the 10x40 as they are more comfortable to hold when glassing for long periods of time. However, if you are looking to save weight have have a more compact size, the 10x30s will blow your mind with how small they are, and just how incredible the optical performance is, particularly for their size. You don't give up much vs the 10x40 overall. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

@@BackwoodsPursuit Thank you so much for your very kind reply. Your review really helped me to make a decision to buy a SFL. I have received the 10x30 however, I ordered a 10x40 as well. Just like you, I preferred the 10x40 for more comfortable handling. However, I returned it because it had a small play in the focus wheel. I am waiting to receive a replacement pair. Thank you again for sharing your experience with me.

@@BackwoodsPursuit This is a quick update. I received a replacement pair for SFL 10x40 which had a bad focus wheel. The new unit had a perfect focus wheel. However, unfortunately, the replacement pair contained a lot of dust or big smudge marks on the inner surface of both objective lenses. Obviously, the view was dull due to that fact. So, I had to return it too. Then I ordered another SFL 10x40 pair from another seller. That one also has an okay focus wheel, but sometimes I feel it is too stiff and reminds me of the Habicht 10x40 I had. I hope it will loosen up with time. The new unit also has dust inside the tubes more than I am happy about. I have never worried about that issue earlier. However, I decided to keep it considering its weight and size which fit me well. I am going to use them as my primary pair of binoculars. It seems SFL really has a quality control issue at least in the lot I got my previously tested units. It is so unfortunate considering how fine binoculars they are. Maybe all the SFL units I got were customer returns. When comparing the image quality I felt like 10x30 were brighter in daylight conditions. I don't know the exact reason for that. However, I felt the image of SFL 10x40 has more contrast into it. I compared the newly received unit with my NL 8x42. As you mentioned in your review they are not far apart with image quality aspects. However, SFL 10x40 is a bit dull even in daylight conditions and it is obvious due to the magnification, exit pupil, and price differences. As far as I remember the view through SFL 10x40 is not as bright as the view through Habicht 10x40. However, I could never get along with Habichts due to uncomfortable eyecups and low eye comfort. Overall, I really like the design of SFL. One more plus point of it is the good glare resistance compared to the NL line. The FOV is also wide enough and I never felt it is too small. The eye comfort is also excellent compared to the NL. Again, thank you so much for your nice review. It made me think about the SFL purchase and it was a good choice I made. I am looking forward to seeing more optics reviews from you in the future.

@virajgunarathne9284 hey there! Thanks for the details on your experience! That's too bad you had some QC issues with the units you ordered. Glad they seem to be mostly worked out though. Thanks again!

Great review, the Vortex UHD razor 12x50 stay on the tripod for glassing while hunting and the 8x42 stays on the chest at all times. Hard to beat the UHD razor for the money. A little heavier but I just got a lighter backpack this year and saved a few pounds. Birding I could see the advantage of the lighter binoculars and lowlight not being as important. These should sale really easy in that department for the cost.

Hey there John! Yeah, the Razor UHD perform very optically! There is certainly a benefit to these lighter weight ones when weight and the compact size matters though. Thanks for watching!

There is not field flattener. You are wrong.

Look at the official Zeiss Brochures for the USA there it is stated that these have field flatteners. Here in Germany it is also stated that these binoculars have field flatteners.

Hey there! I just double checked(want to make sure we are getting correct info out there), and information on the Zeiss website, as well as Zeiss representatives state that both the SF and SFL have the Zeiss Field Flattener Technology. Thanks for watching!

The position of the focuser in relation to its size on the 30, looks like a bad position for the index finger, almost like the two center fingers would fall on the focuser. Also the 40 I tried definitely didn’t have a flat field, if theres a field flattener, it doesn’t work.

@@Paultricounty thanks for the feedback back! We didn't find the focus wheel position on the 30 to be a problem, but, but I'm sure it won't work for all folks. Thanks for watching!

The Kowa Genesis 8X33 and 10X33 have a locking diopter. Same optical performance as Zeiss or Swarovski at much less cost a hidden gem quality binocular made in Japan. Why Zeiss cannot make a locking diopter but keeping costs high is not worthy of Zeiss quality only to cut costs for max profit having a non-locking diopter is unacceptable. For such an expensive binocular.

Thanks for the feedback, Mark. Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Kowa as well! I've not used the 33mm Genesis, but have tested the 44mm extensively. Great binos! Zeiss indicated to me that the locking diopter is something that hunters typically want, but birders do not, so they try to meet both needs with a stiffer mechanism. Personally though, I'm also in the locking diopter camp. Thanks for watching!

People don't talk about the eye-box comfort enough! Thats one of the biggest factors for me in a handheld lower power bino. I hate hearing about how the optical quality of a certain model is sooooo good, then you try a pair and they're picky about perfect alignment. Ruins the experience. Could you guys do a ranking of the most forgiving and comfortable binos for hand holding? I'm not sure what the criteria would be other than subjective opinion.
