Thanks for being courteous; you put your ideas well here. I think I agree with a fair number of them. A lot of time sarcasm has a tendency to cloud discussions rather than clarify them.

my goal became to understand how cars worked back in the 80's (SEVERAL models got 40-50MPG back then), along with their incredible reliability, affordability, and ease of repair, and how we can THEN go forward the RIGHT way, using technology to actually improve these characteristics, not make cars that are disposable, impossible to repair after wrecks, and prone to electronic failures that cost thousands to repair, if it even can be (when the parts cost a few bucks to produce)

toyota passed out some prius adverts, and people were like, oo, 50mpg! that's amazing! i sat there pissed off. the instructor called on me. "what do you think of that, professor?" (nickname given to me) i asked him what it was he bought for his daughter back in the 80's when she was in school. "a ford escort." and did it look aerodynamic, lightweight? have advanced electronics? no. no. and no. what type of MPG did she get out of it? and it hit him. "about 50." i tossed the brochure.

You are right in a way, that's assuming we do away with PO but still operate within capitalism. Suppose though, one day your average citizen had access to 3D printing and digital modeling. Suddenly consumers start dictating the manufacturing of their own products and planned obsolescence disappears, does that mean we will stop seeing advances in product design? I would think the opposite.

I mean getting to a point where that type of technology is available to everyone is still way far off, I really do think that will be the next technological boom though and I think (and hope) that it comes at the cost of the manufacturing and shipping industries. A lot of those "advances" will be large but I think a lot of it will be small improvements, kind of troubleshooting what have already become our ubiquitous products.

There are many flaws in this video. Though the basic premise is correct, it fails to mentions the services in place to take care of issues of "obsolescence" and "waste". You think old computer systems and electronics just get thrown away? No. They are recycled for their precious metals. The vast majority of "waste" is non-degradables such a plastic, and it isn't like you can force obsolete a plastic bag. Supply is dwindling because demand is drastically rising, not because of "waste".

I got a useless four year degree in psychology (there are documentaries on that, too) and had to start over by going to automotive service school (i could write a short book on how being for profit has made the goal of these institutions and their textbooks to teach anything BUT how to really fix cars) *sigh* but i digress. the point i'm trying to get to is that i was shocked to see, examining different models over different years, that they were DESIGNED to fail and designed for bad MPG.

i could go on and on, how hybrids ARE completely viable, but not in their current form (as they are produced now, they are some of the WORST examples of disposable, non-sustainable planned obsolescence), about how the revolutionary future of cars is not engines, transmissions, or computer systems, but the frame they're built on (i've only run across two designers that thought this way, and they're proving it!) and how cars do NOT have to be "harder and harder" to work on than they used to be.

The EESC is planned on labeling the lifespan of product, to prevent waste of resource and money. This is a perfect solution. No need for a RBE or Zeigeist movement that restricts accepted art. Capitalism controlled is the best way to mass production, and have variety. As long as the product is recyclable, biodegradable, carbon free,GMO free, pesticide free, there is no reason to be limited in what I can own and what I can distribute!

I have 30+ years of experience fixing computers. I can positively guarantee you that your computer equipment has intentionally built in failures. I discovered a fix for planned obsolescence in computers and I call it The ReallyBigFix. Anyone can do this fix and save tons of money. Regarding the economics of planned obsolescence, the system is a liar. If a manufacturer builds a long lasting product and sells a million of them. Build something else next. Planned obsolescence is consumer fraud.

False, just look at Honda's gas pedal that was sticking and killing people. They were aware of it but the cost of a recall outweighed the "cost" of the lives lost. They only instituted the recall once the monetary value in lives lost outweighed the cost to fix each pedal recalled, in this case, it was something like 8 bucks a fix. I don't think the engineers are the minds behind PO though, it's probably more finance. I'm sure you did your best but that doesn't mean they honored your designs.

@yolenin1 -- (cont'd)... and everyone else is going bankrupt. We're there. This system HAS TO BE dismantled, and the sooner the better. The destructive attributes of a monetary system are unsustainable and inhumane. It's the root cause of all the problems we're facing today. This outdated system is collapsing on its own, but we have to let it go before things get much worse. And that's the direction we're headed. Please take a look -- watch?v=kVPz7uXLZtI -- Thank you.

@jeremykentdavis but the good thing is YOU can see this, 50 years ago people couldn't, so if you live your life how you believe is right, be a non-conformist, don't consume but instead recycle and make your own decisions not just what the media tells you and teach this to your friends and your children then in another 50 years time the world will again become a different place. so yes FUCK THIS WORLD LETS MAKE A BETTER ONE! peace out!!

As an engineer who has worked with several automotive companies I can safely say that no one does this. You make the best car you can while still making it competitive with other car companies, no one wants them to break and if you are in charge of designing a faulty part you get fired. If you want something that is top quality you just have no be cheap, most people would not buy the best wood to make a table, they would buy what they can afford and tac it together hoping it will last a while.
