Catch a glimpse into Zeitz MOCAA's annual Gala.
This year’s gala is a testament to the incredible teamwork and dedication of our museum staff and leadership, and we are proud of their ability to continuously raise the bar on previous achievements. The past 15 months since the last benefit gala have yielded global successes and exposure for the institution that includes travelling shows of When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, the survey exhibition opened during Zeitz MOCAA’s previous gala and which will travel to Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland, in May, and Shooting Down Babylon, the retrospective of the work of South African artist Tracey Rose, which was shown at Queens Museum, New York and opened at Kunstmuseum Bern, Switzerland, at the end of February.
Koyo Kouoh and her highly committed team have embarked on several ambitious projects, including the ongoing Zeitz MOCAA & University of the Western Cape (UWC) Museum Fellowship Programme, which welcomes its third cohort of young African museum professionals. Its second iteration saw a collaboration that resulted in the stock-take of the museum’s permanent collection and a resulting exhibition titled SALA.
Our educational and curatorial programmes centred on museum exhibitions and composed of publicly accessible webinars, talks, symposiums, seminars, performances as well as classes for all ages through the museum’s Centre for Art Education (CFAE). 2023 saw the release of a formidable set of publications that include Radical Solidarity: A Reader, Johannes Phokela: Only the Sun in the Sky Knows How I Feel - (A Lucid Dream), Mary Evans: GILT. The best-selling When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, published in 2022 by Thames & Hudson in collaboration with Zeitz MOCAA. The catalogue was selected as one of the best art books of the year by the British Sunday Times and the American Hyperallergic.
The exhibition is further considered one of the ten must-see shows in Europe in 2024. The Zeitz MOCAA 2024 Gala is therefore not only a reflection of the past year but a look towards the exciting future of this essential institution that stands on the edge of Cape Town’s shores as a beacon of possibility and light in both its physical form (the building’s pillowed, glazed windows are reminiscent of the guiding lights of a lighthouse) and its intellectual pursuits.
