This makes me wonder if any of the TGL team were involved with Climax Entertainment. The Sword Dancer series feels like one half of the core elements to Dark Savior (the other half being Landstalker, which it is a spiritual successor to alongside Alundra). Its an isometric action RPG with the usual stuff and jumping puzzles, but it's combat system is a 1 on 1 fighting game. It's basic, but has 'special moves', power meters, combos, etc. The game is an absolute trip in all honesty. Set on a prison island as a bounty hunter, any opponents you capture (by using a charged special attack at the right time) can be used in future battles. It's most interesting feature is its 'parallel' system, which changes the story of the game depending on how fast you complete the initial part. Officially there are 5 parallels, but in reality there are 3, with technically a 4th one just being an under-developed tournament fighter mode with multiple steps to access. Since it was a SEGA Saturn release, its likely not a game to be covered on any of the basement brothers sections, but I'd still recommend it to just play for yourself. I'd also like to say that if you do decide to play this game, and have have a good understanding of Japanese, get the Japanese version since it's the cheapest release to buy and it's not censored (the English replaced cigarettes with chocolate for one thing amongst many others).

Sword Dancer 2 may be short, but it seems short but sweet. I kinda like games that respect one's time these days, rather than meandering on and on. Helps that I like Igavanias, which aren't very long games either. Or Parasite Eve, for that matter. Interesting that much of the game seems to be a single megadungeon not far from town, though it's a shame they never made a third entry from the little "everyone waves goodbye till next time" ending. Still, I feel the end ties everything up in a neat l'il bow, even if we never got to see what kinds of adventures the hero gets into after.

Always a love a good attempt to mash-up fighting games with RPGs... or a jank one to be honest, lol. Ever since Shenmue got announced as a "Virtua Fighter RPG," I've loved the IDEA of the design. But usually when games do it, they're not great - like the first Sword Dancer, or Revengers of Vengeance, or more recent titles like Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom (the combat in that one is really odd-feeling and unbalanced). But every once in awhile, something gets it _right_ - Ubi Soft's Naruto games on the 360, Tobal No.2's Quest Mode (if you're a fan of roguelikes) Power Quest, Street Fighter 6's World Tour Mode, etc. I'm really happy to hear that Sword Dancer 2 is one of the good ones! Seems like its worth checking out, so uh... guess I'll hit the high seas and go give this a shot sometime 😉

It's possible, this game did come out a year or so before it. But the original Tales of Phantasia didn't really feel that fighter-ish if that makes sense. It was pretty clunky and spells paused everything. It was also a pretty standard party based JRPG outside of battles.

There's a game from around the same time on the Sega CD called Battle Fantasy ("Revengers of Vengeance" in the US) that had some similar ideas and style / feel. That said, I think the first game that attempted something like this was Sword of Vermilion on the Genesis. It was more like a traditional dungeon crawler with isometric battle sequences and side-on 1v1 boss battles. It was an okay game overall, though as a kid, I was disappointed that the 1v1 battles ended up being a much smaller part of the game than the back of the box made it seem. By the way, what is the track that plays throughout the "Wrap-Up" section?

Well, this game is pretty obviously a Zelda clone. The developers didn't even try to hide it.
