The way conservatives in the US and Australia talk about how "we cant support ukraine we need to defend the pacific" is the same exact shell game of "we shouldn't support foreign nations and spend money on our own people, on healthcare and jobs back home" -- just like how Brexit never brought money into the NHS like Farage said it would. this is all garbage because THE MONEY NEVER GETS SPENT AT HOME, its an excuse to equivacate and justify doing nothing. the money will never be spent on Taiwan if ukraine falls, the money is never spent at home unless its buying more 20,000 dollar cupholders for the air force, and will instead go into corporate donor pockets.

Excellent video. At roughly 49:00 your guest talks about nations knowing where they stand inn following the rule of law and arbitrary rules. I need to stress this point, the US and UK walked away from the rule of law when they invaded Iraq in the early 2000's. Whenever a discussion correlates to this invasion I always bring it up and I always will. Because, both the US and UK have a responsibility to behave better in the future if they want other nations to behave more responsibly as well. Otherwise situations like what we currently see in Ukraine, will be repeated over and over again.

No one can seriously doubt the many instances of humans horrific treatment of other humans. All that changes is the time and place. But still we mentally rewind the clock and begin again as though the humans if today are somehow different or more civilised. I went to the k.. fields in Cambodia and the Hanoi Hilton and am under no illusions of what people are capable of in the pursuit of power. If a psychopath needs to rationalise their actions they simply tell themselves that they are the saviour and therefore all actions that help them to power justifies the means. I cannot fathom the American strategy. They have a once in a lifetime opportunity to hurt (possibly brake up) Russia without a single loss to an American soldier. Yet they prevaricate and pussyfoot around, drip feeding Ukraine with barely enough equipment to sustain the war effort. Yes, it’s bloody expensive, yes it’s fraught with dangers … but my God … think of what those extra arms might achieve. The defeat of Russia and Putin would send a message which would reverberate for decades. It would reassert American military dominance and influence. Europe would be free from the threat of invasion. The Russian people would be free to pursue their lives without interference. China, Iran and Korea would think twice about military adventures! And the thing is … it can be done. The Ukrainians have the ability to win a major victory, they just don’t have the material to get it done.

This Aussie believes every "free world" nation needs their own nukes now. This is more true for small countries who can't or don't want to be involved in conflict. Possibly small countries with very similar cultuers and economic models e.g. Scandanavia, maybe the Baltics could share the capability, but I think even a bloc like the EU overall is not similar enough or politically united enough to have a common defense policy - just look at all the different perspectives and attitudes toward the Russian invasions of Ukraine e.g. Hungary and Turkey's perspectives compared to Poland's or France's. I'm no one. Just some nerd with a casual interest in security affairs - but even I recognisd this pretty much as soon as the Ukraine war started and the US was unwilling to provide. It's pretty obvious. No politically palatable, but it is the new reality. The US is increasingly less interested in being the free world security provider and the only way nations can defend themselves is have the same weapons as potential aggressors. Notice the UK and France are much more indepdent with regards the Ukraine war e.g. the UK gave the first heavy weapons - only 10 or 15 but they broke the "red line" because Russia would get nuked if Russia nuked the UK. Same with StormShadow. Both the UK and France have nukes - not many but enough that hurting them will be very painful for Russia or China or Iran or whoever. The US got to be the world's reserve currency amongst other concessions post WWII and part of the cost of that - or arguably anothger benefit was that they would be the gaunrantor of free world client state's security - in exchange for non-proliferation i.e. very few countries can threaten the US and the reserve currency - i.e. a huge advantage in trade and finance. The US needs to decide if they want to enjoy the advantages they have now - and bear those costs, or if they prefer a more chaotic more world with inreased multilateralism and greater proliferation.

Great discussion as always. As a 76 year old American civil/sanitary/hydraulic/environmenal engineer, I was particularly interested in the discussion of the world wide water situation. I, and other members of my profession, have been working on this problem for many decades now and the technology and other resources are available. Water conservation, agricultural efficiency, water reuse, progressive water rate structures, flood and storm runoff control, industrial water efficiency, etc. There is still a lot to be done of course. Switching to a more plant rather than meat based diet is necessary. Beyond this, the problem is political/economic. As with defense spending, we have put our linited resources towards the most important problems. Again, great discussion and keep up the good work.

In the Russian Kursk region, the Ukrainian grouping surrounded near Lyubimovka is trying to escape through the fields under heavy Russian fire. No Ukrainian reinforcements thrown in the area helped to unblock the cauldron. Russian forces broke through the Ukrainian defenses in the area of Chasov Yar. As a result of a series of successful attacks, soldiers of the Russian army took control of the territory of the Blok-9 mine, located on the southern outskirts of the city. Active assault operations with support of groups on armored vehicles also continue on the city streets. Russians advanced in the Oktyabrsky district. Ukrainian military observers complain that the situation in Chasov Yar is getting worse every day. The Ukrainian garrison is exhausted by prolonged fighting and there is not enough ammunition. In addition, their command in Kiev weakened their defense by removing some of the units of the 80th separate airborne assault brigade from this area and sent them to the Kursk region. Ukrainian positions are also deteriorating in other directions. On October 18th, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed control of Maksimilyanovka. The assault on Kurakhovo may begin in the coming days. The Russians are also expanding their zone of control around the large Ukrainian stronghold of Selidovo and approaching Kupyansk on the northern front. Taking into account the balance of power on all frontlines, the regime in Kiev is doomed to defeat. Thus, Zelensky is crying out loud trying to change the rules of the game. In effect he is trying to drag NATO into war.

The massive Russian wave of strikes on Ukrainian military airfields throughout the country were likely a response to the attempt of the Ukrainian military to attack the Crimean peninsula the day before. The attack on the Russian peninsula was launched by several aircraft of the Air Force of Ukraine that took off from different airfields. When four Su-24M tactiсal bombers took off from the Starokonstantinov airfield in the Khmelnitsk region, Ukrainian MiG-29 and Su-27 were spotted taking off from the airfields in Uman, Dolgintsevo, Mirgorod and Kanatovo located in the central Ukrainian regions. They launched ADM-160 MALD decoy missiles in an attempt to cover up the operations of the tactical bombers. In total, Russian air defense reportedly intercepted and destroyed at least eight missiles that targeted the eastern coast of the Crimean peninsula. No damage was reported as a result of the attack. The Kiev regime is threatened with strategic defeats on the battlefields and the Ukrainian army is losing hope to take back control of at least some of the lost territories. As always, in an attempt to gain some political and media victories, Kiev attempts strikes on Crimea. The cherished dream of the Kiev regime is to destroy the Crimean Bridge which is an important symbol of the modern Russia and Russian Crimea. Despite the fact that the bridge is not used by the Russian military and most of the military supplies to the frontlines are provided through the new Russian regions, where Russians are rapidly restoring all the necessary infrastructure, including roads and railways, the doomed Kiev regime continues wasting expensive NATO missiles in provocations aimed to save the name of Zelensky in the MSM.

On the night of October 18th, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched another wave of strikes on Ukrainian rear facilities throughout the country. According to the Ukrainian military, the country came under one of the most massive attack of Russian drones. According to the official report by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian air defense allegedly intercepted 80 Russian UAVs out of 135 drones. The Ukrainian military command claimed that two UAVs flew back to the territory of Belarus. At the time of publication of the report, a dozen Russian drones were reportedly flying over the central regions of Ukraine. The official reports of Ukrainian military officials rarely correspond to reality. The scale of the revealed damage caused by Russian night attack is much larger than reported by the Ukrainian side. Ukrainian military monitoring sources and local media confirmed explosions throughout the country, including in the western regions. Russian forces launched both Geran-2 kamikaze UAVs and Kh-59 guided missiles. Explosions thundered in the Kiev, Odessa, Sumy, Zhitomir, Rivne, Volyn, Poltava, Cherkassy, Khmelnitsk, Vinnitsa, Kherson, Kharkiv, Kirovograd regions as well as in the area under Ukrainian control in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Numerous Russian strikes were confirmed. The main target of the night attack were Ukrainian military airfields across the country, where military hangars, warehouses and workshops were destroyed, together with Ukrainian aircraft and military equipment from NATO countries.

As an American I am reluctant to comment on British politics or royalty. However the pod discusses US politics because how can they not? The Tory party was in power for the prior 14 years, coming to power in part because of the Labour government's actions on the Afghan/Iraq war. For a Tory politician to blame anything on the over a decade old policies of the previous government that the Tories were not able to effectively address in the intervening 14 years (and the current Labour government has left unaddressed .. in this past 100 days) is an endorsement of the Lib Dems not a argument for Conservative government.

While his army is ground down on the battlefields, Zelensky continues traveling around NATO in an attempt to ignite the fading fire of support from their Western patrons. Faced with imminent strategic defeats, Kiev is sweating away, writing peace plans that are cut off from reality then threatening Europe with nuclear catastrophe. Meanwhile, Moscow and its coldblooded army steadily continue their job, approaching new victories. On the night of October 18, the Ukrainian rear came under another wave of Russian strikes aimed to undermine the capabilities of the Air Force of Ukraine. A series of precision strikes hit Ukrainian airfields in the Sumy, Zhitomir, Rivne, Volyn, Poltava and Khmelnitsk regions. Ukrainian aircraft, warehouses with drones, hangars with military equipment, military workshops and navigation systems from NATO were destroyed. More Russian strikes destroyed Ukrainian military, energy and industrial infrastructure facilities throughout the country. Another series of explosions thundered in the capital Kiev for the second night in a row. In their turn, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted drone and missile strikes in the Russian western rear regions and in Crimea but failed to achieve any results. Kiev lost another night strike battle and is losing control of more and more territories on the ground.
