I don't see why everyone is so mesmerized by this. I have to do it a couple times a summer. It's just like mowing your lawn in comparison.

My dad and I used to mow two fields near our house with scythes. Make no mistake, it's hard work! You will build your core, lats, shoulders and arms from doing this. Also make sure to wear good-fitting work gloves (you'll still need to build calluses on your hands, I found that the space between my thumb and index finger tended to rub a lot). It's very peaceful, unless the flies are bad, and not inhaling engine fumes is a plus.

You can mow very short grass with a scythe, if it's sharp enough and you press the blade down flat on the ground. If you do that, you can mow grass an inch or two high. It's like shaving the ground.

Thank You Botan. Because of these videos from you and some others my new homestead will not hear the sound of a tractor (with a sickle bar and rake on it) for a few more years. At 57, I expect I'll need a tractor sooner or later, but with this kind of workout, I think we can go with later. Who needs a gym if you start you day like this? I'm currently in Ukraine with me wife (working immigration) and have been buying Euro style scyth blades for $10 or less. I figure its a good idea to have a few el cheapos to practice peening on before I destroy a $100 blade. :)

This is my favorite comment to date. Yes, a good scythe is cool AND fun! Many of my customers have told me it's their favorite way to start their day. It gets you revved up and feeling good, and clears your head. Plus, you are accomplishing something.

If you do it right like the gent in the vid, you notice he is standing upright and not crouching...you will find you won't end up with a rotten sore back after the day's work. When I borrow my friend's scythe sometimes, I find I get the job done easier.Notice the angle he has on his scythe blade so he can sweep it well in front of him to get that 180 degree wide sweep. The European blade is so much easier than the antiquated British, and American scythes, and much lighter too. I don't believe in working too hard...but the job gets done quicker as you are not tiring so earlier.

Gardens of Versailles were mown this way, even trimmings. One man can do 3 acres in a hard day, tho it takes rather less effort than you might think. My neighbors think Im nuts! Still, maintaining a close relationship with a good blade is elemental, v satisfying. Thank goodness for diamond sharpeners! BTW, buy a good one.

I've had some comments before on this video, asking if there was a scythe that cuts in both directions, so you can get an equal workout on both sides. Once upon a time there was such a scythe. See it in this historical film Hämeenkyrön heinänteko. Peltotöitä vuodelta 1936 at 5:00

It is easy on the back because the blade stays on the ground throughout the entire cutting swing (in both directions)!!! You never lift the blade off of the ground if you are scythying correctly.

awesome sound as its cuts through the grass. bought one to cut a new path through for me and this old boy as we both walk our dogs round near the river bank and as nearby land was used for a new road so the council moved the gypsies horses so the path is not trodden anymore. think I have about 1.5 mile to cut 😵

ok, I'll bite 5.21 hours per acre?? Very calming and rhythmic!. I've got a 2 wheeled tractor and 60 inch sickle bar. One big advantage I see with the scythe is the ready made windrow you leave. Sickle bar leaves the cuttings randomly placed requiring a lot of raking to get it back to the place your scythe leaves it. I wouldn't be surprised if it wouldn't take as much time to do the raking as the scything you're doing. Great video!

I have a personal collection of over a hundred blades, but I only need 3. (shhh, don't tell my wife!) A 60-65cm Bavarian style blade, for trimming and difficult mowing conditions; a 75-85cm long hook-nosed blade, like in the video above, for full out, long field strokes; and a 40-50cm light bush blade for mowing thick woody stemmed weeds and brambles. No, I haven't worn out a blade yet.
