Playing WoW recently made me just appreciate even more the way FF14 visually does mechs, and I'm not just talking about how certain mechs have the same marker across all content. I mean there is not mech that has a single indicator, EVERYTHING has multiple ways to see it, this is huge because for instance, a mech might be a Blue orb and a Red orb that indicate how you handle them, but in FF14 that red orb is going to have for instance a spiral inside it, while the Blue one has a Triangle inside of it. NOTHING is ever only distinct via color, so people like me who are partially colorblind (or wholly) can still do the hardest content with 0 cripple because there are other ways to tell. I always appreciated this a lot, but playing WoW recently where they don't seem to consider us color impaired people really makes a lot of things frustrating because well, idk what the color is, they all look the same to me for this mech sooooo I can't do it unless someone else tells me which one is which. Just made me appreciate it even more

@@aileenswann Most games have the absolute bare minimum option for colorblindness in their settings, they only ever cover 2-3 of the most common types so if you aren't 1 of those 3, there is no option for you (WoW and FF14 both having the bare minimum) But FF14 goes the extra mile in other ways, they have ALWAYS been really really good about creating additional indicators, there's a learning curve in a raid group because everyone else on your team is calling "blue" for a mech, but once you see that "blue" is also "star" for instance, now you know okay when they say Blue i know it's the Star. WoW just doesn't have that, they don't take that extra step. Some fights do, but considering its on and off, I doubt it's something they've ever done consciously. FF14 having it in every fight shows a level of intent behind it

There was a really good thread on Twitter about the whole discourse going on with ultimate TLDR: this person made a stance in support of ultimate's barrier for entry and got told to stop gatekeeping Their response was, paraphrased, "ultimate gatekeeps itself by requiring you to clear the respective savage tier and have best in slot or next to it. You can't just fudge your ilvl in a raid where even a basic raidwide aoe can kill everyone but the tanks. If you didn't have the time or motivation in four months to clear the final fight and get bis, what makes you think you'd have anywhere near the required time for ultimate prog?" And I think it's as true as you can get. The devs have admitted that they don't make ultimate wholly accessible. It is through and through for the people with the time and the dedication to get that shit done

Not only that, but keeping it behind savage tier requirement means there will be way less time-wasting trap parties in pf as well. Imagine if anyone could make ultimate party, and you check their gear and they can't survive a basic raid wide without 50%+ mitigation or never meet dps checks

@@liamwilson7549 Why not? Unlike WoW, FFXIV has all sorts of content. Raiding isn't the main focus in FFXIV. It is quite literally side content. If you can't clear a current savage tier you wont be able to clear an ultimate. Why waste your time and everyone elses time when you're unable to complete content that is a quarter of ultimates difficulty. Ultimates were created so that Savage raids could become more accessible and in return they gave hardcore raiders ultimates. If Square decides to dumb down an ultimate, then literally what's the point of having them? UCoB and UwU are significantly easier to do than they were on release with less demanding DPS checks but still offer a fulfilling challenge. There are options, people are just being selfish. If anything wanting to experience these fights should be a motivator to improve. If you're unable to create the time to raid then that's on you and you shouldn't ruin it for everyone else. Ultimates being more accessible is a baseless aguement, as it goes against the entire purpose of them in the first place.

I have recently started doing minimum item level, no echo Extreme trials and Savage raids as a new player, and I gotta say, this is the most fun I have ever had permawiping to mechanics. Look I suck at the game, it took me 2 groups and 4 hours to clear Shiva mine and like 3 hours to clear Garuda mine and I don't even want to know how long it took me to clear Turn 5 of Coils mine. I didn't even bothered tracking how long it took to clear Alexander Fist of the Father mine. And I had a blast. It feels so rewarding to finally get the clear and looking at how your group slowly starts to understand mechanics. Although I do wish I could get a static to raid with because the most frustrating and least fun part for me is learning all the mechanics with a group, being super close to clearing, dying, someone leaving and having the entire party break apart. Just to start from square one the next day with a different group that has to learn the mechanics all over again. Although I recently got invited to a discord channel of a bunch of people that do only mine content and that feels fucking amazing. I'm excited af.

I'm pretty much mostly a filthy casual but usually the first hurdle that stops most players from doing any of this semi hard, hard or hardest content in most games is people to play with. For raids and dungeons in many games it can be pretty tedious to not only find a group you enjoy or click with but also needs to be on semi regularly. Hard to do a raid if multiple members can't get on because of work or not motivated enough to do it. A guild/group needs to be and stay motivated to do this stuff together. It's a pretty common issue that ranges from D&D to MMOs. Getting and keeping enough people together is a pretty challenging process to do group content with. Unless you're so motivated you'll do it with randoms that's another option I guess but that comes with it's own cons. I know my work schedule sucks for most raiding groups so I just opt out cause I can't be there most times, rather have someone better for that group join it than me getting in once in a blue moon on a dedicated group. After that first hurdle then it's up to you to actually put effort and dedication in to beat the raid.
@Zynch175

This The only thing keeping me from doing Extremes, Savages and Ultimates is a group. I know I am capable of playing at a level that is sufficient to clear the content. I've done it through Party Finder a couple of times, but it was not a fun experience having to go through and wipe on mechanics you already know over and over just because the party composition changed. And with a different group each time having to even change tactics depending on which set of macros/markers someone has messes your gameplay up for at least a couple of pulls. This just drains my motivation to do the fight after wiping on the first or second mechanic of the fight for the third day in a row. And trying to find a group that doesn't wanna do raids every day is pretty challenging in itself. I personally don't have the luxury of having multiple hours to sink into it every day, especially if those couple of hours are the only time I have to play games so 1 or 2 times a week would be the most I'd be willing to put in. So yeah. In my opinion the real ultimate is having a nice fixed group to play with.

So, this was in Warframe, back when Void Keys were a thing(they sucked and therefore got replaced), I was tired of leveling mastery fodder by hanging out while other people did all the work so I took my latest bit of mastery fodder and went to go do a T1 Void Survival with Dual Heat Swords and Trinity(regular, Prime wasn't even out yet). Then Stalker Showed Up, but it was T1 so even with his silence clearing my DR abilities he still couldn't oneshot me so I'd hit him a bunch, Blessing twice while he tried to kill me back, run off to EV a random Corrupted to get my energy back, go back to hitting Stalker. Found a static almost a few months later, and after a grueling few months of progression and needing to replace several members, we had cleared and I got my weapon and title. Nothing beats the fulfillment of overcoming a difficult encounter with others that have the same goal and reciprocating respect for each other. Anyone can clear as long as they’re patient and want the clear. I consider myself an average gamer, but I listened to feedback and asked questions from those more experienced with the encounter without being a jerk. Imo, as a 5 years FFXIV player myself, the best way to get a hang of hard content is trials ex. That gets your feet wet, teaching you mechanics are not as forgiving as casual content (they are often too fast for players to react to them if you're sitting in a bad spot and you have to learn pre positions saving your insta GCDs for movement), and you can insta die (instead of in most cases be able to survive stuff in normal duties or ally raid with 2/3 stacks of vuln if you're healer or dps, and 5/7 if you're tank and you know how to use your CDs). Or well, that's how i got better at the game (mind you, im not claiming to be a top tier player lol). Mixing that with starting to use ACT to check on my dps (im a BLM main). Well, technically, i got better when for fun me and friends decided to do synched coils now that i think about it. Then thanks to ingame friends moved to savage, sucking at it big time at first (it is a step up from even trials ex) but progressively getting better at it (going from barely making it to green logs to purples... still didn't get an orange :sadge:). Now i am considering tackling ultimates, but im not there yet. I dunno. They do not interest me for some reason. Maybe because i don't care that much for glams nor titles (i feel most people tackle ultimates for either flex the new legend titles or weapon glam... but i might be wrong). Maybe i'll get there some day. I like savage more because there's always the thrill to get that better gear piece and to actually get the best gear possibly in the game (at least for that specific patch cycle lol).

Think from now on I'll be joining a midcore static as I just can't cope with people screwing up easy mechanics anymore.

Older gamers, who has video games as their main hobby from like 90th, knows that average gamer can beat content, its just needs time to learn the encounters. People who beat Battletoads on Sega, they will have no issues learning Elden Ring, or any "hard core PvE" fights in MMOs. But yeah, dat feeling when you link in chat server only piece of gear/mount/cosmetic, OMG that is addicting. Like you werent just part of team who cleared it first, you also was lucky enough to win the roll.

I've never had any desire to get gud at MMOs because the juice just isn't worth the squeeze. Almost anything else you largely learn but just doing. Can't beat the boss in Elden Ring? Start watching the bosses attack patterns. Need to get better at chess learn a opening and just start playing. Want to get better at cooking? But a protein some vegetables and some spices and figure that shit out. With MMOs is like first you gotta master the class, then you grind the right gear, then you've got to find the right group and only then can you actually start the high end dungeons.

The thing with FFXIV raids is that the only challenging part is blind progression and like 99% of players don't do progression anyways. They use guides etc. So I don't really understand how "normal" players are so put off like it was so hard. Just do it a bunch of times and you'll memorise when to do what. Combat is kind of a non factor since it's as undynamic as you would expect from a GCD tab target game with latency

The road to success has become a big question in our society in general. Super successful people are our heroes. But we kinda try to forget or ignore that the only way to get there is by failing over and over and having the patience, passion and strength to try again and again to improve yourself. I know this deeply because I'm a (professional) musician and from raiding WoW and especially Dark Souls. No matter how I try to explain to people it's just practice, making mistakes, improving and doing it again, they prefer to believe that I'm somehow gifted or that's it's somehow magical even... It's really not. There are these crazy arpeggios from a famous guitar solo that I've been practicing for like 5 years. I can do it now and it's really cool to pull it off, but don't forget to see those 5 years of failing! Also I think being in this process of failing and learning, knowing deep within that you will ultimately succeed and then eventually doing it, is one of the best things you can do in life. No matter if it's in a video game, your job, sport.. Doesn't matter. But I encourage you to find something like that!

Rich would play better if he's partying with people at his level. He doesn't feel the pressure of optimizing your rotation and learning the intricacy of the mechs to maximize damage. So yeah, if he gets into DSR soon, he will have to improve his skills and he will be a better player after. Because honestly, most dungeon/extreme/raid mechs are reskinned with different names and it just goes over Richs head.

Whether it is worth it or not is purely subjective. Having cleared the first 3 ultimates etc it really isn’t worth it imo. Sure the weapons are a flex and look cool, sure the content is super challenging to prog, but is the time investment, stress, frustration worth the shiny weapon and feeling of accomplishment? Well that’s for each person to decide. Personally I never felt anything but relief to finally be done with those fights yet some reason I felt obligated more than anything because of my competitive nature. However, I’m not going to prog the new ultimate because they just aren’t that fun to me and the time investment is substantial relative to the reward. Even so, there is still a part of me that feels I should be progging right now but I have to fight that urge and go back to that moment where wiping 300-500 times or more for a kill just isn’t worth it. I have nothing left to prove to myself and I admire the people that have the level of commitment and resolve to push through this content because it truly is brutal.

I have raided in both games at a top level and the difficulty more or less looks like. Normal in WoW = most extreme trials You can learn them in under 3 hours. Hard in WoW = 1st boss of Savage. Normally take a couple hours to get down but not too bad. Mythic in WoW = The rest of Savage "Sometimes boss 3 or 4 in Savage is its own tier -Looking at Pepsi Man" Ultimate = not ment to be cleared by the general player base. Honestly I have not seen a fight in WoW that requires what Ultimate requires. Example: Looking back at the coils and Azmon clears... these were still way diffrent then when they were on tier. Jobs have had many diffrent changes and additions to make them stronger. This can cause players to not respect the fight because they ran it no-echo min ilvl and all of that but they are still playing the updated version of their job. I respect anyone who trys Ultimates and the requirements make it so if you can zone in you can clear if you put the time in, the question is how much time will be required.

To this day I still am one of the only people who roleplays in Pearl Lane that uses the bow in public. But it's proof even someone who joined the game for roleplay can achieve this is they try. It will happen. Just push. Fall, cry, and bleed; but you will get it if you don't give up.

EW Extremes and first savage for example - random groups just one-shot them being more busy memeing the chat than paying attention to actual battle. I don't do savages simply because it just takes too long. I can't stand doing something for more than an hour if it is the same thing over and over. It was like with the second trial of endwalker. The group I was in wiped the entire time of the instance timer even though I knew the fights. This was normal difficulty. The mechanics weren't even that hard. But I was with group that did the 2nd trial and took the full instance time 4 times before i finally just gave off on trying to play with others and went with the NPC Teams. I don't like doing that. I cannot stand spending 90 minutes to two hours on the same boss over and over and over again.

This is coming from someone who started off using tank classes during heavensward release, I decided I wanted to set the "engagement" terms, someone told me that it was an unwritten rule in Team based MMOS that tanks set the pace (when there is only the one) because I wanted to take my time. not speed run dungeons or encounters. ( first try anyway) Didn't really struggle, learnt tank and off tank stances (when relevant), rotations and positioning, slowly built up to raids, solo queue that is, but as the content progressed, I noticed that there would be mechanics that would crop up that would be hard to intuit, use observation, hearing etc. first time and if you got caught in them it was pretty much game over or a near wipe, then a heck of a lot of flaming, usually DPS but definitely not all, despite me telling them "first time running this, so bare with me please" as a macro at the very start, so I eventually had to start learning about the mechanics and the entire fights, dungeons or alliance raids beforehand....which I don't like doing. This can be further compounded for people who like the "fresh" approach as the "first timers" in alliance raids , for those moments where the individual teams have to do specific different tasks or it's game over, so a bunch of macro markers appear all over the arena and you haven't a clue what it all means and before you can even type "as part of my team what do I have to do for this part" you're all off to the races. My advice for anyone "first timing" and "soloing" and relatively new, make a macro specifically for alliance raids, posted in the team chat bar that says something like "First time, I know my job rotations but can anyone give me quick tips for mechanics that our team need to be aware of beforehand". Oftentimes, after setting that I've almost always had someone in the team, who must be typing like an Olympian on speed going over the encounters before we enter them, I've rarely struggled with someone willing to do that. However I am one of those who likes a "fresh experience", I like learning from the failure, not preparing to avoid it all beforehand, it forces you to be actively attentive. As time went on it felt like more and more of the mechanics didn't allow you to react or respond to them even last second, you had to know exactly what it would do beforehand, that's how it felt. I am also not one of those who only gets a single add group every time regardless (to me that IS TOO slow), I observe what the party is capable of handling, if we've killed one group with absolute ease, I'll move on to the next group and pull a second and repeat that build up until I can judge this is kind of the max pull limit for this particular group, that doesn't require the healer popping their long emergency cooldowns. I eventually got burnt out and started levelling DPS and healer. I feel the healer's pain with a bad tank, who doesn't position or just runs off into the sunset screaming for glory. I feel more of the DPS(who only play DPS) should keep their traps shut before popping off at the healer and tank, you're job is exponentially easier, it's chalk and cheese, reinforced after levelling multiple DPS jobs, if it bothers you that much, leave the party and wait all that time for another roulette again, which again I had to experience, though I will feel sympathy if they haven't fully learned their job move mechanics to get the most damage on a DPS checker boss or situation. Anyway I eventually joined a group, that like the "first try = laugh at the failure" mindset, even if it's a mechanic we can't know the outcomes beforehand, my game enjoyment is much higher and much more willing to do even harder content because we're all of the same mentality "yeah we're gonna get clapped". I know it's a long tangent but I feel like this leads towards a big reason why some decide not to build up content, some people don't want to learn all the things about an encounter beforehand, can have bad interaction with some groups in the duty finder if they are solo, find a group that shares your mindset and until then make sure you inform everyone when it is new content to you, that you're not sure of the specific mechanics and that you understand some of them may have done this content many times and don't want to hand hold (this final part is very important), if they flame you, they flame you, most in my experience don't, some have and changed their minds after I made that final point. Sorry for the long rambling post, hope it was a good read at least, at most hopefully a much newer player can take something from it.
