Many years ago I switched to Altra and love them, but I still think it’s funny how only Altra have the USP “foot shaped toe boxes”, how has the shoe industry been able to make shoes that aren’t?! 🧐Great shoe-off video. Loyd

I agree. I can’t do pointed shoes anymore. I wanted to like Topo Athletic but they’re too narrow in the heel and fore foot. Altra is starting to improve on their foams. After the abysmal Via Olympus brick midsoles, the Torin 7’s are pretty squishy.

I have both shoes. For me the LP 7 is the best. The fit, especially in the toe box, is great as l have a broad forefoot. Also, as soon as l put on the LP 7s and began running the annoying post-run pain in my left knee went and l could run without suffering next day when walking upstairs. When l transitioned to the inov-8 Trailfly G 270 V2 they were tight in the toe box, felt less forgiving on harder surfaces and l had a return of the post run left knee pain. Conclusions: inov-8 Trailfly G 270 V2 are definately NOT a wide fit shoe, my toes felt squashed, insufficient impact absorption and ........ are they really zero drop??? LP7s are less expensive, great wide fit, definately zero drop, better for mixed surface running and no post run knee pain. Won't be going near inov-8 Trailfly G 270 V2 s again, a very expensive lesson learnt. LP 7s👍👍👍 Phil Burke

I have had the same effect with zero drop on knee pain. Have you ever looked up IT band syndrome? Your 'knee' pain is most likely caused by this. There are some easy exercises you can do to solve this even more besides wearing zero drop.

I’m closing in on 400 miles on my current pair of Inov8 G270’s, which is the second pair I’ve had I use after the first pair made it to 450 or so. Have a third pair waiting in the wings to take over soon. Not tried the Altra and I’m sure they are a fantastic trail shoe but for me the Inov8 G270 is amazing. It’s firm but handles everything on the trail except the deepest of mud for which I turn to my XTalons. I can’t recommend enough.

You're right, as always 😊 Altra shoes are comfy and enjoyable, but something is missing in every single shoe I had, I would describe it as "pure running feels more difficult than other shoes", as you pointed out, especially at the end of a longer run. I can only compare the last Altra I ran (Lone Peak 4) with the Inov-8 Terraultra 270 and the Inov-8 wins hands down in every department apart from level of cushion...this is why I decided to leave Altra, there are so many better shoes out there and my feet are average, so no selling point at all

The problem with the newer Lone Peaks is they lack any bouncyness or softness in the sole whatsoever, besides they run too big compared to other Altra models, also the lock on the foot is not so good...Altra should give up the EGO and the EVA compound midsoles immediately. ...other than that, the upper is pretty cool and in the 8 it looks even better in durability terms

The Lone Peak is a tank. Unfortunately it feels a bit like running in clogs- heavy and not terribly locked down. I appreciate the Trailfly 270 as they do allow some toe splay while still offering a very locked down midfoot. It's a great compromise. I found the outsoles pretty comparable between the two no matter what the marketing says, LP offering more space for foot swelling, TF a firmer ride and better in super technical situations. You do you but my LP are now my front line shoe for trail maintenance where the Inov-8s I actually run in. Being a longtume Inov-8 fan it's nice to get their characteristic low stack, quick response, aggressive outsole balanced with some ultra friendly features without going maximal. Seems the perfect shoe for a technical 50k and enough versatility to go up or down a bit. The Lone Peak is a good shoe. Not for me in most scenarios but I'd definitely consider it for say a non technical 100k+

I haven't run in Lone Peaks in years, but what disappoints me w Altra's signature outsoles are they get destroyed quickly on pavement, and where I usually run, it is unavoidable to pound some pavement on some sections. This was as true with the Timps I had before.

That's why I have ditched the Altra. The lugs ware down way too quickly . Also I noticed they have their own wall , so to speak. After about twelve miles my feet suddenly start to ache . That said I managed my fastest 50 miler in a pair. I think psychologically they are a shoe trail runners want to be good but in reality they are heavy , flappy and dont last long .

Good review, I started running in 2016 and used Inov-8 upto 2022 but then they made them narrower, so I tried Altras but they didn't fit and the quality isn't so good. I now have SG5 wide fit for routes with a lot of road sections. But my new choice for trail/race/ultra shoes are Topo Pursuit (0 drop) and Topo Ultraventure 3 (5mm drop) and I rotate them to get a mix of 0 and 5 drop as they are very similar apart from the drop. Would be good to see dome more Topo reviews if you can get them to send you some samples 👍

I'm two runs into the Altra Lone Peak 7 and first zero drop as well. I've never run in anything quite like them and the shape and fit seem to be perfect for my feet. I know they aren't in this head-to-head but I ordered a pair of Inov-8 (the G300 max) and as soon as I put them on they came straight off, back in the box and returned. They didn't fit my feet and the lack of padding in the upper just wasn't for me. Compare that to the LP7 upper and they're just fantastic! It'll be interesting to see how they feel on longer runs.

Altra’s following in the US is primarily driven by thru hikers and toe splay kooks. High in the mountains I rarely see any runners in them. I’ll wear Olympus on fireroad/recovery runs but lockdown is too sloppy not matter what lacing method you use. Innov G 2 is close to perfection for ultra racing.

Great head-to-head vid! I have both the G270s and the LP7s - and have put about 400k in both. In my perfect world I’d use Inov8’s sole materials - G grip, powerflow max, boomerang- to make the Lone Peak. The LPs are the perfect shape, the Gs have better grip and feel. Also, the LP uppers drain better.

I've not tried the Lone Peak, and suspect I won't now. I replaced my g260 a while back with some g270 (old version) and got some Altra Torin 4s at the same time. I did mixed road/trail runs in the g270, and started using them instead of the Torin all my road running because the just felt better to run in, and safer and faster in the wet. The torins were very comfy for walking and easy hiking though, so they just got used for that.

Good comparison! I use both Lone Peak and the G270. G270s are now my go to for long technical/fell/races. In the lone peak I think the flappy feeling you mention could be down to lack of a forefoot rocker as well as the extra weight. Like you say, the relative lightness of the g270 is a big reason why they feel faster, but also the slightly more pronounced rocker between ball of forefoot and tip of the toe on the G270 helps with maintaining good form over longer distances. But, when it comes to easy long runs i go for the Lone peaks, as they’re better for my foot shape… when I got into running 5 years ago I wore exclusively vivobarefoot and my toes naturally splayed, feet got a lot stronger and I wouldn’t be a runner if it wasn’t for barefoot shoes, but now I have to go a size or a 1/2 size up in any inov8 because of the more standard pointed toe box

Interesting your comment re: sizing on Inov8s. I'm normally a UK11 in everything and a UK11 works fine for me with my Inov8 G280s too. Now, my G270s by comparison actually feel a little LONG in a UK11 somehow, almost feels like there's a little extra space beyond end up of the insole inside the shoe, like I could actually go DOWN half a size compared to my regular size! Sizing is odd, isn't it!!
