Back in the 1963-1967 days we did not have any annual doctor check ups at all. And we were told just suck it up. We never heard of heartburn, gerd, strictures, sleep apnea, rhinitis, or anything much. The only medical thing in my records is a fractured nasal bones because I needed hospitalization. The largest unit other than the 16 weeks of boot camp was 9 of us at a small search and rescue and law enforcement unit and from there I went to a 4 man unit. Remember we did duty 24/7/365 with that few guys that got some time off of course. Talk about being spread thin. So we simply did not go to doctors etc unless it was life or death so we knew nothing about medical or mental issues other than suck it up.

@NobodyNobody-hx6wh
Ай бұрын
Your right, it's not fair but what are you going to do about it? Check out some of the other videos on Civ Div where Clay talks about building a bridge back to service. For example, if you have been treated over the years after getting out of service for these illnesses you may have told physicians decades ago that it started on active duty and how it happend and it might be in civilian medical notes. Since you were in a combat ready unit, don't know your MOS but if you were IN, FA, EN, AR or others you can pull up the MOS physical requirements / demands to illustrate the physical demands you were under. Do have an ABN or AASLT badge. You can do a personal statement. Sometimes units have websites or forums and you can join and try and find buddies that you served with that saw your injury and can do a buddy statement. It can take some work, but it's worth it. Hang in there man.

I never complained about anything while in service due to the push through pain attitude. And when the time came to get out I didn’t check off any issues at the exit exam.. i did not want to be stuck where I was for even a day longer than needed. I ended up filing claims within a year of getting out with zero diagnosis and was rated at 60% which has increased to 80%. I am currently pushing for 100% and it looks good so far. If you file within a year of leaving the service it’s deemed presumptive. So it’s not impossible with no in service complaints, just harder to prove depending on if you have a diagnosis, who your examiner is, and if you file within a year of separation.

The BEST way to have those conditions static to show the current diagnosis is chronic and likely to not get better. In reality, after the OOG report in ‘22 we’ve seen less and less ratings that aren’t static. I’d even go to say uncommon. Lets say that I had Hyperthyroidism, but that hyperthyroidism was fixed via Radioactive iodine a few years before I filed any disability paperwork. But then since the thyroid is dead, you now get Hypothyroidism with Thyroid Eye disease. Which comes with eye pain, light sensitivity and bad headaches and having to take Synthroid for the rest of your life. The thing is I still have active headaches and eye pain. The path for connecting them all would be nuts. Burn Pit - Hyper - Iodine - Hypo - thyroid eye disease Is it possible to have hyperthyroidism linked back to Burn Pits, and in turn daisy chaining the rest of the issues that came from that? There are lots of NIH papers on Thyroid issues and Burn Pits.
@NobodyNobody-hx6wh
Ай бұрын
I assume you had Hyperthyroidism and were treated on active duty with the Radioactive Iodine and thus already service connected, even if only at 0%? If so, then the hypothyroidism, TED and associated symptoms/diagnoses are residuals of / secondary to the treatment of your service connected hyperthyroidism. Get with your Endocrinologist and have him indicate your current issues and diagnoses are all known sequela of Hyperthyroidism. If you are not already service connected for having had Hyperthyroidism and treated for it on active duty, then do that first. You should get service connected at 0% but now you can go for all the secondary service connections.

@@th3maester PACT act has included hypo/hyperthroid as a presumptive, at least not yet. They did add hypothyroid for Vietnam ERA - Agent Orange exposure, so who knows, in the future it could be added to Gulf War /9-11 vets in the future as well. The VA will look at your claim if you submit it. With the NIH articles you speak to ref burn pits and the thyroid - no guarantee - but you would need to find a endocrinologist / specialist who could review your records and deployment history and essentially indicate a nexus between your burn pit exposure and later development of the hyperthyroidism. It would not be on a presumptive basis, but your individual case, your evidence, your nexus and medical articles provided might be enough for the rater to send you to a C&P exam. If you get that and the C&P examiner indicates as likely as not that your hyperthyroid condition was due to your burn pit exposure then you have a chance.

What if you never complained about anything regarding OIF mental health while in-service? A lot of the symptoms can develop after the fact. Anybody have any advice or tips?
@NobodyNobody-hx6wh
Ай бұрын
If you have any Battle Buddies that you are still in contact with/that you can track down that you discussed the OIF events with at the time you can have them write buddy statements. You can have family members and friends that knew you before and after service and if they are able to say everthing was fine before you joined the service but after you left service over time they noted concerning things and write statements for you. You can also write a personal statement. If you haven't spoken to a mental health professional, then you need to. If you have a Vet Center close to you, you can get counseling for free, it is confidential and they are trained and know how to assess and deal with combat related mental health issues and diagnoses. Once you have a diagnosis, mental health visit notes that support your mental health issues as originating on active duty due to OIF/combat and other cooberating statements then you have a good chance of getting a C&P exam once you put in a claim. With the Vet Center, the visits are confidential and not viewable in the general VA healthcare systembut you can authorize release of the notes to the VA if/when you desire.
