Thank you for this recipe. I was looking for something. Baking soda was too harsh. The dentist was even more harsh with their polishing powder and instrument. I discovered something odd. (My whole body hurt including my teeth when a drunk totaled my car). Brushing teeth was painful, even tap water. So I used warm water to really soften the tooth brush. That's when I discovered the warm water did a great job cleaning off plaque. (I have healthy teeth, no cavities. Almost 50). I can't wait to experiment with this toothpaste. Im trying to replace with homemade products at home. I love the recipes!!!! Thank you

We´ve been using this toothpaste for a couple of months now, and we´re all super happy. It´s gentle but cleans really well, and the taste is good. I like to add 1 tea spoon of healing clay powder per jar to the mix before stirring it; it gives a pretty beige-ish colour and it´s packed with minerals!

Just want to reassure you, baking soda on teeth is armful for everyone, not just for sensitive teeth, because it's too aggressive. It give the impression it works because it scratches your teeth so arshly that removes the enamel. :)

@@virginia4123 that's not actually accurate information. The American Dental Association published the RDA method, which became the standard for laboratory measurement of toothpaste abrasiveness. RDA values are obtained in the laboratory by comparing the amount of dentin tooth. Baking soda is NOT abrasive. The RDA abrasiveness categories are: Low 0-70 (plain water is 4. Baking soda is 7.) Medium 70-100 High 100-150 Harmful 150-250 The FDA limits abrasiveness to a maximum of RDA 200. The RDA of Arm & Hammer baking soda is only 7. Thanks for recommending the arrowroot powder as an alternative to baking soda! I have been interested in making my own toothpaste, but I've been frightened about the baking soda part since it's notoriously abrasive on teeth in other recipes. I'll keep this in mind to use the arrowroot powder in place of the baking soda with my other toothpaste recipes that I already have in my DIY beauty books at home.

Just as an FYI for folks - it's worth googling where your essential oils come from and the process for making them. It is far from cruelty free or low waste. It takes an insane amount of plant matter to make a very small amount of oil. Many of them are grown/harvested in developing countries, and the 'organic' certification only means that. The plants are grown organically. That doesn't mean they can't burn down a rainforest to plant those things, or exploit their workers.

I have used coconut oil and baking soda for years with either peppermint or clove eo. One important thing I learned is to use a glass jar for releasing g oil mixture from ones' mouth versus the sink due to potential damage to pipes due to oil over long term. If I have any packaging I empty the jar into such and it does go in my minimal waste disposal.

Wow, great video! I would love to try this. Is this effective as a toothpaste to prevent cavities and properly clean the teeth? My dentist is concerned about lacking flouride. Are essential oils safe to use? I know you are not eating them, but inevitably you would swallow some of it? What is the role of the arrowroot? Is there a substitute? Thanks in advance! I love this channel - it's so great to see a low waste, sustainable Irish channel ☺

Sinéad M ah an Irish lass! Lovely to have someone from Ireland watching. My dentist isn’t pro fluoride so I’m ok. My teeth are perfect. My dentist says the biggest problem is diet and also not brushing our teeth properly or for long enough. You can get food grade essential oils. Just ask in a good health store. I’m not fussy (maybe I should be ;-) Arrowroot is an old remedy for babies teething. It reduces inflammation. The alternative could be some corn starch. Really I use the arrowroot for cleaning ability. In India they gargle coconut oil as their oral hygiene. It’s called oil pulling. You can find loads of info on it online. Any other questions just send me a dm on insta or email (on the about page here) Have a good one Sinéad!

I am sure if you use any other oil as an alternative, such as olive or sunflower oil, it will also work just fine. Why coconut oil is a good choice, is for its antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties, however, to turn any powder into a paste, any oil is fine, as long as it is edible. Or just do a research if any other oils also have similar properties. You can also make infused oils by yourself at home, for example: put dried rosemary in a glass jar, cover it with edible oil (olive, sunflower or any other), store it in in dark room, room temperature is fine, and after 4 weeks, you have wonderfully smelling oil which you can use in this toothpaste, any other cosmetic product aswell as in your kitchen. Water is not recommended for any homemade cosmetics product, because you need to add perservatives, to prevent products going bad, which are in most cases not natural.

I should mention that I just mixed it up cold (didn't soften the coconut oil at all just mixed it together with the arrowroot). Would it have been better if I had? I only made a small amount (just a Tablespoon of each). I'm happy to play around with this if anyone has any ideas? Maybe some calcium carbonate? And out of curiosity - why not just use calcium, is there any particular reason? I mean, the arrowroot is certainly cheaper and easier to get and it was much easier to mix together with the coconut oil. Thanks for the recipe and appreciate any help. Cheers.

He said that tooth care is more about the brushing than the actual toothpaste and that toothpaste was mostly for fresh breath. Gwen Engillsdóttir Hi Gwen, you could use cornstarch if you like. I would make sure it is organic as cornstarch come from corn and the majority of corn in GMO. Arrowroot is also more gentle on your digestive system. Corn goes through a lengthy process to become cornstarch and some harsh chemicals are used in the process so arrowroot powder is ideal but cornstarch will do the job. I hope that helps. 👍

Thank you so much. I have just one question. Is arrowroot powder or arrowroot flour the same or are this different things? Thank you. Greetings from Austria

Hi, can I ask where you buy the arrow root powder? I'm delighted to get this tips from an Irish channel. I actually have a chance of getting the ingredients 🤗 Thank you x

Jennifer Cronin haha I'm delighted to have someone from Ireland watch the videos! You can buy arrowroot powder package free from Minimal Waste Grocery. You'll find them on Instagram or their website of the same name. Alternatively you can get arrowroot powder in small cardboard containers in some health food stores and I think tesco! X

Hey! I'm currentely in Indonesia and I used liquid coconut oil because it's very hot here. I tried to have something more consistent and put the toothpast on the fridge. However, I obtained different layers, one white (looks like coconut oil), and the other one brown (the flour)..Should I use the toothpast liquid instead? Thanks!

I feel the amount is so tiny that it is ok. But I know there are people who would be more conscientious of the pipes. When I do oil pulling which uses much more oil, I always place out on the soil.

Remember this is solid at room temperature. Its like a rock in cool temperatures. A neighbor spit coconut oil in sink itches a very expensive fix because it turns like a rock as it goes to the street. .please, spit it in garbage. Cheers😊

As for putting it on the soil, it can ruin the soil. It fills it and becomes unusable. Soil needs to drain, they call it percolating. Oil clogs this natural process. This occurs in dry wells and septic systems. Once the dry well, or septic system clogs, its considered a failed system. The only remedy is to replace it completely. That is very expensive since soil must be brought it. I went through this. Both dry well and septic. This lead me to ask why would I want to clog any soil, including my garden? I hope this is helpful.

hummm not sure... arrowroot has some properties that are beneficial for your teeth so I'm not sure about cassava...

Fairyland Cottage I thought so. I use clay with coconut oil. I have cassava flour available that’s why I thought of substituting it for the arrow root. Anyway, thank you very much for the reply and for your very inspiring and informative videos.

@@FairylandCottage I just had a dental hygienist today tell me that I need to use a fluoride rinse because of my teeth being so close together. The flossing isn't getting everything clean enough. 😨
