Hi Gary, I manage a small automotive engineering company in the boonies, and my tech and I are slowly dismantling a ZF5 HP-24A, basically the Audi Quattro version of what you're doing but as far as I can tell the clutches and drums are the same as ZF 5 HP-24. Hi Gary, excellent videos! You are extremely helpful. I have the option to replace a 5HP24A (Code: FUL) from a 2004 Audi A6 4.2 with a 5HP24A (Code: FBC) from a 2001 Audi A6 4.2. According to my factory repair manual from Audi, I have determined all of the drive ratios are the same. What are the potential differences between these two transmissions? I am willing to take the risk on a used unit because the price is extremely affordable and I could potentially use this as a core deposit on a refurbished unit.

Great Video Gary Ferraro, very informative. I am actually planning on tackling my own zf5hp24 rebuild for my 2001 BMW 740i due to a no reverse. But i do have a question that i just cant seem to find the answer to. What will cause the vehicle to Hard Down shift from 2nd gear to 1st when coming to a complete stop? it slips only between shifting from 3 to 4. When I stay in gear 3 up past 3000rpm, the moment I get into 4, there is a small gap where nothing happens, then it engages, not super hard, but hard. Thanks for the video Gary. It's been enlightening. I too have a question. I'm in the process of rebuilding my 5hp24. I've deduced that the needle bearing between the B clutch drum hub and the C clutch drum piston has failed and also A clutch drum o-rings. This has caused the B clutch drum hub to wear into the B disc carrier and also the B clutch drum hub to wear into the split rings on the C clutch drum piston. It appears that the clutch spring also spun against and wore into the C clutch drum piston. I also have wear on the B clutch drum hub from the same needle bearing fail. I have managed to source a new B clutch drum hub but I did not notice the wear on the C piston until now. my question is: Should I clean up the C piston and reassemble and try to correct with appropriate shims or should I source a new C piston? What would Gary do?

Hi Gary, have a problem with my bmw x5 5hp24 car would slip and judder mainly in 3rd and 4th, if driven in manual mode fault wouldn't be so bad but in auto mode would go into trans fail safe under moderate acceleration gives code 20speed signal n-ab(output) and 30 mechanical converter lockup clutch monitoring. I'm not the boss aka Gary, but my e53 x5 03 4.4 V8 had a judder and it was fixed with a torque converter. Never had a code or failsafe but it did judder. Funny enough it does have an electronic failsafe situation now after some additional work I performed, but I am thinking it's a poor contact somewhere on the main or sub plugs. It just goes away on a restart and only happens on researt usually when warm. I have to check the connectors. Perhaps the shift selector and haven't bothered to read the stored codes if any. Anywsy my symptoms: shudder at low throttle and low rpm typically. Went away 98% in sport mode. I could hear a scraping when it was "acting up" and the vehicle was reflecting sound off a wall or barrier when I was driving. Alps idling the tunnel had a tone to it, sounded kind of like a little hollow or something. All that went away with a torque converter. I'm sure the trans could use a rebuild but for now it shifts smooth and doesn't judder shudder etc.

Took off the valve body, pulled off the fluid lines, took out the seals, center support slid right out. Everything back to the "F" clutch looks brandy-ass new, practically no dust. Transmission has a repair date of 2013 and is signed by a technician, the bell housing has a stenciled installation date. No stripped nuts or bolts, I took apart the front clutches and seals and it's perfect. My assumption (which is a word I don't like to use) is that a "good" shop rebuilt this unit in 2013 and, as it gave no problems and made no noises until the front pump gear failed due to clumsy re-installation, I'm going to go with simple re-assembly. Here's my question: I have a Valvoline "universal" "Foreign auto" synthetic transmission fluid. I like synthetics. The assembly lube is synthetic. Do you think there is a great difference between the ZF "recommended" fluid and the Valvoline stuff I have? Thanks for any input and your videos are life-savers. Thanks again.

Do you have any codes? do you see any change in rpm when this issue happens?

No codes at all. If I drive around town running errands, etc., every once in a while, it will go into trans fail safe mode AFTER I turn the ignition off but I can restart it and it's back to normal. The rpms change when it's cycling but only by a few hundred or so. Once I get above 60mph it's perfect. I did use an aftermarket filter so I will be changing that. In your opinion, how low does the trans have to be on fluid to cause any issues? The reason I ask is because when I was adding the last quart, I lost my grip and spilled maybe 3-4 ounces. I also read that someone with a Dodge Ram with a ZF trans was having the same cycling issue and he was told to reroute a ground wire away from the alternator and problem solved. 🤔 Again, I really appreciate your input and your time! If the A clutch is blown, that means the front lower half of the valvebody is worn, you could either change the casting and install the 2nd design valve or you can get a valve from transgo and use original casting

Hi Gary, I have a customer with a 2001 x5 4.4 with the 5hp24. It's in limp mode and the codes are "gear monitoring" 31 and 3B "stall speed". Hexadecimal codes. First time I've seen the vehicle. It does have a bad abs module which I am replacing and coding to the vehicle. It seems stuck in 4th/limp mode with a bad rr wheel speed sensor (unrelated to the abs module failure but will know for sure tomorrow). Once I figure out the abs and wheel speed, he says specifically that the "other shops" assured him it was the torque converter. I want to cash in but I want to fix it. I don't wanna just shoot for the torque converter if it has no chance of fixing it. I'm going to check fluid running and off and listen for the torque converter closely making noise. Just leaning towards a replacement tranny but I did fix mine (same vehicle) but it has classic torque converter shudder and shifter perfectly otherwise so I was certain on mine. But his being stuck in limp and those codes make me think possible tq conv but possibly worse. I'll see what I find but any tips, appreciate it. Best from Seattle

Update: his case had a damaged pan screw hole for one. Some previous mechanic screwed in a screw sideways and broke the case. They jb welded it and it still leaked for me after exploratory initial service. It can happen to the best of us but that's lazy work usually. And his transfer care didn't spin easily. It spun freely but not easily spinning the front driveshaft output spline. Really had to spin the input fast to make it move. So far I replaced his transfer case, a longer custom driveshaft to grab more spline length, and a whole used tranny. I supplied all used parts. He supplied a new rock auto torque converter. Well it makes a hell of a racket at the pump or converter. It took all the fill capacity, about 10l. I am saying "screw it" and firstly I will replace the converter with the original unit from the used trannie. Fill it and see if it makes a racket still. If not, the cheap converter is fired. If not I do the removal again and replace the pump section with his quiet old pump. That's it. I will reply with an update on Wednesday 11/7/18 best to all, Spence

Sorry for late reply. Upon removal I made one small error. You know the dowel guide pin / sleeves usually on the block, sometimes comes out with the tranny? I smashed two together. One was in donor tranny. Oversight on my end. However All lined up fine tho. I fixed the issue and installed used torque converter. Trans I installed may have been rebuilt. Valve body wiring very bright still. Noise is gone and car shifts perfectly. Unsure if guide dowel caused issue. Replacement torque converter was original to used tranny (matched set), rock auto converter back in the box and gave to customer.

I came to a conclusion that, if you replace the valve body and change the oil with a quality good one you could probably see 200k++ miles out of them, my wife's car has the 6hp19 with 220k miles no problems, and I had a friend with the 5hp24 with no problems with 280k but he was an enthusiast.

Hello Gary many of appreciate the videos to your Work. I'm new to your channel. I too have a couple ZF TRANSMISSIONS. I'm having a problem with one, all gears work except 4&5 on a 5hp19fla code (FUL). IT'S ON AN AUDI A6. Before the problem arose I noticed a jolt while traveling around 60mph when I gently accelerate. like if kick down was stuck then a violent engagement. only once in a while. Now it lost 4&5 completely. 123 and reverse work like if there is nothing wrong only when it gets 4 it totally loses it then limp mode . I'm pretty competent on doing the work I was just wondering where I should focus if it's a valve body issue or is one of those DRUMS is faulty? thank you.

G-user A. Hello,and welcome. Do you have any trouble codes for the transmission? Gary
@liquidsteel
7 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro I do only when I force 4th to engage . it will trip the light on and the code will be excessive slippage. that the TCU will go into limp mode. another question, is limp mode 4th? cause when it does then the vehicle will not move. if I force reset the TCU it will Again work but only 123 and reverse. it almost feels like a partial engagement at time if I feather the throttle. but if I give it more it will let go and if RPMS shoot more than a couple times it will trip the MIL light and transmission light at the same time and I would start the Reset with scanner all over again.
@GaryFerraro

Hello, Limp mode is 4th on this trans. If you have no 4th or 5th, its possible you have a problem with your E clutch drum which is on in 4th and 5th, how is the fluid level and how is the condition of the fluid?
@liquidsteel
7 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro fluid wasn't too bad, kinda dark but I have been changing every 45K. it was due for its third change and then this fault happened. that definitely explains why it goes to limp mode. and I lose all movement (positive engagement). I can almost feel 4th if I'm moving about 40mph. and be gentle on the throttle. If I give too much I can feel it slip and completely let go.

Hi Gary. I have the same ZF5HP24 transmission in my 2005 l322. cant figure out what happened to it (actually I broke 2 of them). when was changing oil, dropped the pan, then started the vehicle, switched thru all gears (for about 10seconds) to drain as much oil as possible (I think that was a very bad move), then new filter, oil but... now my transmission goes in D with about 2-3seconds delay and hard kick , and when I try to accelerate (even slowly) something slips and trans safe mode message... code says stall speed something (don't remember right now). it does that only when hot, cold shifts perfect. couldn't find anything what looks wrong inside (I'm not a pro), then I bought a used tranny, installed, drove couple days, it worked perfect, decided to change oil: exactly the same procedure and... same results as with the first one: when hot goes in D with delayed hard kick, then safe mode. any ideas what could I break by changing oil in such a wrong way??

filter OE from Range Rover dealership. reverse is always fine, no matter hot or cold. if i start my RR in the morning it drives for about 5 miles with no problem, perfect shifting (outside temp 55F), then when I stop on signal light and trying to takeoff something slips with noise, hard kick, safe mode...

Hi Gary. I have a 1997 BMW 540i that has this transmission. The issue I'm finding, is when the gearbox goes to downshift from 5th to 4th, either in auto or sports mode, it has a hard downshift. Is this a common issue? Is it the valve body or deeper?
@GaryFerraro

Not really a common issue, any codes? have you checked the fluid level?
@joelwilson8496

Gary Ferraro Yes, fluid level is topped off / in operational levels. Every shift is smooth, including shift 4 to 5... But when coming back from 5 to 4 it 'shunts'. I was wondering if there is a valve related to the 5 to 4 down shift that might be faulty or clogged. I haven't seen a code for it, but I can check and get back to you.

Filter must say "FILTRAN" on the plastic side, and the reason is to use Filtran filters is because aftermarket filter, the filter element can collapse and block flow to the pump , Filtran has reinforced the filter element prevent this from happening.

+zech007 The dacron material is thicker than the o.e flter and restricts the oil flow causing the pump to make noise. The noise is the pump straving for oil. I know this because i caught one of my suppliers selling me a 5.00 filter for 40 dollars and on the road test with the rebuilt trans i had a noise like the filter was clogged. Gary

Gary, I have a 2001 BMW E38 (740IL sport edition). Over the last 3 years I have noticed when driving between 50-60mph that my car has a subtle surge feel. I have run it on the highway with the cruise control engaged and can definitely fell the surge is continuos on a flat straight away. My rpms on the engine do not change when experiencing this "surging" feeling so I assume this is transmission related. I have the transmission serviced every 65K and now with the car just passing 248K mark, my concern is something is getting ready to fail big time. My dealership says they are unsure what is causing the issue and there are no transmission codes (per them) being thrown. This car is in primo shape so I hate to punt on keeping it given its the last of the 7series pre 2002 remake. Have you experience with the issue I am describing and is there something I could point my dealership to or possibly take to an independent repair shop in my area (St Louis) to address my concern? Thanks again for your insight, I love your very in depth videos on the tearing down of transmissions.
@GaryFerraro
8 жыл бұрын
+Ladislao Delgado Hello, An issue like that is very hard to diagnose, and no codes are present, with no codes very hard to get a direction, as far as the trans goes, if this were falling out of lock-up or surging in 5th, you should see the rpm fluctuate. Do you see the rpm move at all even 300 rpm increase when you feel the issue.
@ladislaodelgado9638
8 жыл бұрын
+Gary Ferraro ..nope, no movement at all in rpm...it stays very constant. I have made it a point of driving it on a flat major interstate in St. Louis so as not to cause the car to shift in an out of the higher gear which is where the "surging" feeling is experienced. One other oddity is that when I drive in a 2nd or 3rd gear in my neighborhood (somewhat hilly area) if the car is not in sport mode the transmission struggles to stay smooth..but if I shit to sport D 4th gear it clears up. I am assuming the gear ratio in sport mode is enough to generate the torque that may be missing in normal drive mode....but again I am not "car savvy" ...just speculating.
@GaryFerraro
8 жыл бұрын
+Ladislao Delgado if that rpm stays may not be a trans issue, have you looked at or checked any engine sensors such as mass air flow sensor?
@ladislaodelgado9638
8 жыл бұрын
+Gary Ferraro I did look at that and disconnected and inspected but again no codes were thrown per my dealership. I even went out and purchased a code reader from Acron and verified no engine codes. I attempted to purchase a reader that would read the 16pin interface so I could check for transmission codes but could not find one less than $1000 so I am relying on my dealership to advise me. Why would a MAF be a potential problem...if the rpms do not refect the surging. I had considered a vacumn leak given my timing gasket and head gasket leak? Given the sluggishness when I am driving up hill in my neighboorhood and the car is in a higher gear...would air flow issue cause this sluggishness or could the timing or head gasket leaks be creating this condition. I have had my head gasket replaced once before at 180K. But I can not remember when this surge started either before or after that work. The timing gasket leak just started roughly 40k ago....so coincidently with this surging. As i stated, the leaks are typical BMW issues....and could be costly to get repaired vs just some oil on my garage floor weekly. I have an oil mat under it so the cosmetics of the leak don't bother me. I would hate to get this work done and still have the surge given the dealership does not even have an opinion on what is causing it. On another perspective, what about the pressure regulating solenoids....?
@GaryFerraro
8 жыл бұрын
+Ladislao Delgado The mass air fow sensor calulates engine load, if it gives the wrong info may cause the engine to surge or maybe seem like a lack of power. the scanner you bought, does it give you live data? I feel a vacuum leak would show up at an idle, as you increase engine rpm and the more air that gets sucked in, that would make up for any vacuum leak. Again just running things through my mind, very hard to get direction with no codes.

where are you located? ..bought a new car ..runs /drives great ..shifts "good" ..called the dealer that serviced it and they said customer just put $28,000 worth of new parts..turbo(s) ,,timing ..etc..but dropped a bomb that former owner was told it needed a trans ..i bought it from a smaller dealer 900 miles away..drove it home ..have added 2k miles ..felt a slight slip a couple times ..i have been babying it,,when i use the paddle it is strong ...oh sorry ..new car in an '03 audi RS6 ..4.2 twin turbo..i knew these cars could have issues but i thought i searched out a sorted one .. mostly noticed it slip going from like 45...to 5-10 mph n gas again.., like a round about or intersection ..gets stuck between..not sure if a torque converter replace would fix it?...like a brand new car otherwise..i'm bummed i got burned ..i told the audi tech what i paid and he said i got a steal..so a trans fix n its a new car i guess .. ..ty steve

@GaryFerraro

+steve-o painter Cant find the last message that you sent, but i did read it, as far as beefing up the zf5hp24 trans, not much can be done, they have a problem of pressure spikes due to lower front valvebody wear, you could change that section of the valvebody and install the updated pressure reg valve, other than that not much else, also change the piston in the f clutch drum, the bonding peels off and you loose reverse.

7 жыл бұрын
Ok, so disassemble the A drum, there may be torn seals, check the bore on the lower front valvebody, if its not worn, just go with the 2nd design reg valve. Also, again with the F clutch piston, very common issue for the bonding to come off and then it will slip in reverse, i always change that with an OE piston

I have a 2001 X5 with this ZFHP24 trans. On occasion, I get Trans Failsafe Warning and the car goes into limp mode. I've resolved by shutting the engine off and starting back up. Car will run normally for weeks before running into the same problem which made me believe the issue was electronic. I am in the process of a motor swap and now is a good opportunity to rebuild. Transmission has 205,000 miles on it. I imagine that I want to completely tear down the transmission and rebuild...question is...what do I need and who do I buy it from? I see stuff on eBay Motors but the rebuild kits vary in the items included in the kits (partial to full rebuild I assume) and there is a wide range in price. Thank you for your guidance in advance...great video!

Ok, where are you located, im thinking i could hook you up with my rep and he can ship the parts to you. Question on the trans, did you happen to pull a code as to why this was going into failsafe? that may give some direction. The reason why it comes out of failsafe when you shut off the car is you actually erase the memory of the computer so it forgot it had a problem until it sees it again. Can you tell me when it goes into failsafe? what are the driving conditions?
@davem526
7 жыл бұрын
I'm in the San Francisco Bay area. Normal driving conditions on city streets. Pull up to a stop...Trans Fail warning lamp and chime...then limp mode in a higher gear (2nd or 3rd maybe). Car lurches until I get up to speed but won't shift. I don't recall ever seeing a code. The car has been in storage for a few years waiting for me to repair the engine but I don't remember seeing a code related to the transmission but I'm more savvy on how to read the scanner now than I was then too. I'm not sure if I could pull a code from the computer at this point. Engine and trans are out of the car and it's been off the battery for quite a while.

Ok first of all not impressed ZF transmissions .... So I have replaced the transmission on my 2001 bmw 740i sport with a ZF factory rebuilt zf5hp24. Worked great but had a whine so I made my mechanic send (at least he said he did) it back within the first month for another one. I now have 40,000 miles on it and it has a whine on acceleration… if I am on the highway the whine is more like a drone sound that is constant. Where it is most noticeable is on the compression side if I accelerate hard then let of the gas it is very pronounced. The transmission however runs like a champ from the way it shifts, No slips nothing, any ideas …. Are we talking my torque convertor??? Clogged cooler/heat exchanger.. pump??… ready to scream I love the car but can’t believe BMW put such a lousy ZF transmission in it. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. mcss14@yahoo.com

+Gary Ferraro. Gary the whine increases with speed however not when I take my foot off the gas. It is much more pronounced when compression is involved for example if I put it in 1 or the lowest gear at a stop sign then accelerate and then take my foot off the gas you really hear it.. but lets say I am on an entrance ramp to the highway and kick down into passing gear and after say 5 seconds I had to take my foot off the gas again very pronounced with compression but once it shifts to adjust to speed change and compression is gon so is the noise was in 2 and accelerate you hear but not real bad but if I hold it a like 20 mph it settles into the whine. ... if I a..

+TattooPyramidHead Hello, I certainly would change that F clutch piston(if you can go with OE), also that F clutch drum is low/reverse, so if you have engine braking in low, that drum is ok. The C clutch drum is also on in reverse. Inside the lower rear section of the valvebody, there are plastic dampers, one is for the A clutch(foward) and the other is for the C clutch(reverse), havent seen it alot but they tend to crack, and the pistons have been updated

Everything checks out ok, sprag, valve body, seals can't find any problems inside, when it went into failsafe, code was 3B stall speed monitoring. Is the Meistersatz filter ok too use? I bought the car in April of 2017 transmission went in June about 4 blocks from home, I did not drive it after failsafe code. The transmission was rebuilt October 2012, I found the date when I pulled the transmission.

If reverse is ok, has to be something in the A clutch circuit, can you air check the A drum? also, look at the upper rear section of the valvebody make sure there are no cracks there. sprag turns one way and locks the other way? So this has no foward at all or does it slip foward? the stall monitoring code means the computer is seeing a slip on takeoff
