The Qinghefang Historical and Cultural Street District is located at the foot of Wushan Mountain in the southern scenic area of Hangzhou, just a few hundred meters from West Lake, covering an area of 13.66 hectares. As the only well-preserved old urban area in Hangzhou, the Qinghefang Historical District is a microcosm of the city's long history.
Qinghefang has been a bustling area of Hangzhou since ancient times. Located in the old urban area of Shangcheng District, it boasts rich historical and cultural heritage. East of the New Gong Bridge on Hefang Street is the site of Deshou Palace, the sleeping palace of Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty. During the Southern Song period, Zhang Jun, who was titled the Prince of Qinghe, resided on what was then known as Imperial Street in Taiping Alley, hence the area was named Qinghefang. In the Southern Song era, Qinghefang was lined with shops, restaurants, and teahouses, serving as the political, cultural, and commercial hub of Hangzhou. Through the Yuan, Ming, Qing, and Republican periods, and into the early years of liberation, this area remained a commercial center of Hangzhou. Historic Hangzhou businesses such as Wang Xingji, Zhang Xiaoquan, Wanlong Ham Store, Hu Qingyutang, Fanghuichuntang, Yezhongdetang, Baohetang, Zhuangyuanguan, Wangrunxing, Yiyuan Gold Store, Jingyangguan, and Yangtang Restaurant are all concentrated here.
In 2000, the municipal government issued the "Hangzhou Qinghefang Historical District Protection Measures," preserving the Qinghefang Street District during the old city renovation. By October 2001, the main street of Hefang Street was completed. In October 2004, Gaoyin Street Food Street was built. The entire district now integrates tourism, shopping, dining, entertainment, and leisure functions. In addition to retaining the famous old brands in the area, about 200 businesses have been introduced through leasing and joint ventures to operate in antiques, calligraphy, paintings, tourism souvenirs, handicrafts, and local specialties, creating a commercial and tourism district that is a must-visit for tourists and a frequent spot for Hangzhou residents. The district receives over 10 million visitors from home and abroad annually.
