People, you weren't born in the wrong generation. It's much better now. All of this music is now at your fingertips, in the best quality! Back in the day, the friggin' dark ages, you would have missed out on so much of this good stuff, because it would be that much harder to know about, discover, or even buy.

Yeah, information aplenty, we'll never know how it is to be super-rich in the middle of the bubble, driving a cabrio into the sunrise by the seaside, in Tokyo Bay, after a night of passion with a young and lively lady whose first interest is having mindless fun. The sea breeze in your hair, the empty road, this music playing... (EDIT: I hadn't read the translated lyrics before I told you this, but apparently it's what the song is all about!)

Every time I listen to 80s Japanese music I think of the movie My Lucky Stars, in certain parts of the film when the characters are in Japan at night it reminds me of all those good 80s songs
A middle-of-the -night joke I'll soon be inside a morning Guess it's close... This smell A drive all alone This's right off the top of my head A middle-of-the -night joke I'm not good at getting up early But staying up late, it depends on my mood I'm a female who I can drive flat out any time I want Though the same is true of love, it's just a joke when I start a love There's nobody and no oncoming car I'm drifting away alone In the case of a drama, a guy is there when I look at passenger seat Cool guy who I have ever seen once or twice This's a bad joke, so stop it! I'll soon be inside a morning Guess it's close... This smell A drive all alone This's right off the top of my head A middle-of-the -night joke With luck, I might be able to see the sea With luck, I'm able to forget it I'm a female who I cry in regret after joking too much "This is trueth," I'll be able to say that but I keep on drive The way I am, remain unchanged

“Midnight Joke” (MAYONAKA NO JOKE) Takako Mamiya Released: November 25, 1982 by Kitty Records Japan Lyrics: Ichiko Takehana, Composition: Hiroyuki Namba (Sense of Wonder, ex-Tatsuro Yamashita's back band) Arrangement: Genji Sawai / Osamu Shiomura /Musicians Vocal: Takako Mamiya Keyboard: Hiroyuki Namba (Sense of Wonder, ex-Tatsuro Yamashita's back band) Guitar: Kazuo Shiina (ex-Hachimitsu Pai, ex-Moon Riders, ex-Tatsuro Yamashita back band) Bass: Yoshihiro Naruse (CASIOPEA III) Drums: Yutaka Uehara (ex-Coconut Bank, ex-Sugar Babe) Percussion: Tatsuji Yokoyama, Tetsuaki Hozoku Brass Section: Hitoshi Okano, Toshio Araki, Osamu Shiomura, Shigeru Kawashima, Genji Sawai, Mitsuru Kanekuni The additional musicians Keyboard: Akira Inoue (ex-Parachute) Guitar: Mitsuo Nagai, Tsunehide Matsuki (ex-THE PLAYERS) Others (English translation of the rough meaning of the Japanese lyrics) I can smell the dawn, I'm sure morning would be coming soon. I'm running alone on a midnight drive. It’s only a light joke in a midnight, I've come out on a midnight drive that I started on a whim. I'm not good at getting up early. But I'm fine if I'm up all through night. I'm a woman who can drive through the night, if I feel like it. I guess the same thing can be said when I'm fall in love, It all always starts with a joke in my cases Driving in the middle of the night is freely Cause there are no cars and no one to meet. My car can run freely and fluidly alone. In the case of movie dramas, at times like this, there might be a guy next to me. He's a guy I've only met a few times and I don't know him well yet. Ah, It’s a stupid joke, going to stop it. I can smell the dawn, I'm sure morning would be coming soon. I'm running alone on a midnight drive. It’s only a light joke in a midnight, I've come out on a midnight drive that I started on a whim. Hopefully I will be able to see the ocean soon. Hopefully I will be able to forget about him. I'm a woman who jokes too much and sometimes cries because of it. I could say that I was really serious, but it's just only a joke. Fine, I'm going to keep driving. I'm going to keep running , like just way I am. /This song is about a woman who broke up with her boyfriend and drove her car alone in the middle of the night to get rid of the loneliness of being alone and how she felt.(The song is about the loneliness of being alone, and on the other hand, the freedom of being alone, and the complex feelings of being both light and dark at the same time.) If we write out the true meaning of the title, “JOKE at Midnight”, it would be as follows 1_ It's like a Joke,The magic of midnight drives me to go for a drive alone. 2_When midnight comes, Something about midnight makes me drive alone, like a JOKE 3_Driving alone late at night, it's like a midnight JOKE Japanese language is full of abbreviations and tends not to describe everything. Therefore, the reader must assume the real meaning and true intention from the author's background and supplement it. Japanese is such a language. Therefore, there are cases where the meaning does not come through by simply replacing a Japanese word with an English word. Japanese people have considered it rude and unmannerly to directly express their feelings and desires to others. this song reminds me of my crush. the last time we were hanging out (driving around with his car and talking about everything possible), we listened to Japanese 80s songs. I fell in love with the genre! I can't wait to see him again. he's currently in a military training (has been there for a year, but we started talking a month ago), but that will end in ~11 days. I can't wait to hug and kiss him again. I can't wait to hang out with him.

If ya'll interested try finding the entire album "Love Trip". The whole thing is pure gold, especially the title track.
3 years ago I was at rock bottom. I was depressed and lost more will to live with each day that ended. My daughter was about to be born and I was out of a job and I had dropped out of college and I was just watching how uninspired my life was, so I listened to this song for many nights and allowed her to hold on to my feelings and that was liberating. Many years may pass but whenever I listen I will remember the feeling, the loneliness and being filled with yourself. stay well!

Probably the most aesthetic, chill, rythmic and beautiful city pop track ever made, so unfortunate that takako only made on album and she wasn't even that well known in Japan... We gotta make sure the world hears this, I have already bought one
