1. That was indeed Zhou Shen singing the Chinese operatic part. It sounds "synthesized" because it's a particular vocal technique used in Beijing Opera that can sound very foreign, almost "electronic" to Western ears. Let's just say Zhou Shen's fans went bananas over it! 2. The cabinets at the end in the MV is just one of the thousands of artefacts in the Ming dynasty imperial collection housed in the Palace Museum today (the current incarnation of the Forbidden City). It's a black lacquered cabinet with gold linings and décor, used to store various herbs and medicines for use in traditional Chinese medicine (the Chinese characters on the exterior are the names & functions of those herbs/medicines, a sort of labelling). 3. If you delve into the lyrics of the song, you will see a sense of struggle and helplessness, in the tide of forces beyond a person's control. And yet, the song ends with a message of hope and encouragement, urging the person to not give up but persevere and expend all efforts regardless of ultimate success/failure and in spite of possible defeat to destiny, fate - that is to say, let one's passion and inner fire be the "glimmer of light" in the midst of imposing darkness (hence, the name 光亮). It's the journey that matters - which echos the poem in question. All these lyrics tie into the narrative of this particular episode in the documentary, which tells the history of how the last Ming dynasty emperor, Chong Zhen, fought in desperation to save his empire but ultimately failed, an exercise in futility.

Zhou Shen is so capable that he always sings every part in his own songs, even the harmony. So rest assured that every bit of the song is Zhou Shen's voice - except otherwise specified in very rare occasions.
Yup..Zhou Shen sang the operatic parts too!👍👍👍👍👍👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

The only misunderstanding of your mum's comment about ZhouShen singing with computerized part, which actually is one part of Traditional singing tones. This derives from a Chinese culture, called "Beijing Opera drama tone" (京剧戏腔). He had to learn it with great deal of effort from specialised singer in that artistic culture and professions. BTW, thanks for you and your mum making this video.

Love how Zhou Shen give us aspirations. No matter where ever or whatever. He will always send us love, consoles, and encouragement in many creative and beautiful ways. I think this song was a theme song from a movie. About the one of the last emperor from the Ming dynasty. During his time of rule, royal family was declining. He tried to recover lost glory from the pass when the time of Ming dynasty was strongest. He was losing hope. I guess Zhou Shen is giving this message to us ‘Light yourself. Find the light in yourself. No matter how dark, don’t give up hope.’

The song isn't inspired by 定风波. It's the theme song for the sixth episode of the documentary, which features the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty Chongzhen, who struggled in vain to save crumbling empire and was eventually rumoured to have hung himself on a tree on Meishan. Parts of 定风波 was incorporated into the song because of the connection with the documentary in praise of Chongzhen for the tenacity he showed during his reign, albeit his lack of leadership and inability to run a country. It's worth noting that Chongzhen was unpreparedly forced to ascend the throne at the tender age of 16 after his elder brother Tianqi, the previous emperor, died at age 22. It was as though he was destined to lead a very sad and troubled life.

That poem itself speaks about what the Chinese people and it's government wanted - a peace and stress-less life and China has proven that for centuries. The massive Admiral Zheng He's sea explorations around half of the world in the 15th century did not end up in colonizing any countries BUT to make friends and trade. China never instigated any wars but have been instigated by other countries into it so in general, China has always wanted to live peacefully and harmoniously with others.

Zhou Shen's voice is so unique due to the fact that he could sing "into female's range and pitch", also the reason why he was shot down by many (before he got popular and well known in his 1st audition in a singing competition) that he will never make it in singing. His uniqueness was where he made it and highly sought after to the level of popularity he is today. That part of high pitch voice you were asking whether he sang that - Yes he did, that's his signature no others could copied. His Big Fish song years ago still amazes me till today.

Hey Jack! Great to see you with another Zhou Shen reaction 😀 He's had a lot of songs come out this past year, but this one's my favourite so far, and a favourite of many fans, so it's the perfect song to react to for your "comeback" 😄 Interesting that you chose to focus on the poem (I actually didn't know what it meant, so thank you for the explanation!), since what makes this song so impactful and emotional and bittersweet for many of us is the history being depicted in it (which other commenters have described in detail already). The song really gives a sense of holding onto glimmers of hope in the midst of hopelessness or even tragedy (hence the official English translation of the song title, "Silver Linings")

Great song and lyrics. I think Zhou Shen has achieved a matured style of singing. It has more depth compared to all his other songs. Very down-to-earth. I love it.
