Very interesting. I started this same project myself just yesterday. So cool to see you doing the same on the very next day. Zigbee2Mqtt took me a while to figure out, but it is running smoothly now.

I've just redone my home automation in Docker. Had it all manually installed on a RPi 3, but bought a Rock Pi 4 to replace it with NVMe SSD, then just kept rewriting the install script while the RPi was up until I was able to provision every service easily. Will also mean updates are easier too :-) Just waiting for my CC2351 to arrive.

I'm actually moving away from docker. Unfortunately adding new things always required me to fix the container with dependencies first. And it's often more time to troubleshoot why things not working together than actually play with the project 🤷🏼♂️

I do like the CC253x series. They are fiddly to flash initially but after that they work. I ended up spending the extra money on a Elelabs Device and later a Conbee2 in a different setup. The Conbee2 was a steal. It was like $25 on a sale, which just made sense to me over flashing. Either way, the CC2531 just works with just about eerything. The range is about the same for both. I use Home Assistant on my Raspberry Pi, so I retained the voice assistant support.

I should really hookup the conbee2 stick... it's still on my shelf untouched - I have issue with time allocation lately. One would think that lockdown would help with that

@@notenoughtech I have found the conbee2 quite reliable with DeConz gateway software, but I believe it can work with a lot of other software. I know what you mean about being time poor at the moment. My work has become busier rather than quieter.

I also didn't wanted to flash the stick so I found on eBay sellers that are offering already flashed sticks. I also got one flashed with the router firmware to extend the range of the network. I didn't knew at that time that any AC powered zigbee device is also a router automatically.

Actually you can use the CC3531 with Alexa/Google Home very easily with Hassio.

I agree. Personally i find HASS a little too constraining. Don't get me wrong - I totally understand why people like it. For automation controls is a great tool, you just don't get to experiment as much as in NR

There are also solutions to use Alexa/Google Home/Apple thing in NR. Works flawlessly for me.

I bought a bunch of xiaomi sensors and lights. I am able to run the lights on node red but my internet provider blocks the xiaom hub constant traffic to Chinese servers so I am unable to use any of the sensors. Will this stick enable using the sensors or are they encrypted to only work with the hub?

Great comparison, very interesting. Do you know if it is possible to run Trådfri switch and light both through a e.g. Conbee 2 and if it is down, then they communicate directly? Or is it only with Trådfri gateway?
@notenoughtech

They work directly too as IKEA supports direct binding
@kenneth_jensen

@@notenoughtech so you pair light and switch against the Zigbee stick first? Then switch against the light bulp or is it the other way around? I can't afford to test it as I need a very high WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) 😁
@notenoughtech

@@kenneth_jensen binding can be done to a single device only so if you are interested in having a backup, bind controller to the bulb and bulb to the coordinator. This way when coordinator goes down you can control the bulb

do you need to have node red or in my case hassio running on the pi or can you just use the pi to flash, and is posible toi use more than one stick for range ?

Just use one or two zigbee lights ...always on devices act as routers in the mesh. It's a money better spent

What are your view on home assistant ?
@notenoughtech
5 жыл бұрын
I only used it a little bit in all honesty. I always meant to try it in a more serious capacity but running a node red server never gave me a reason. It has its place and makes basic automation very accessible but I have a feeling that it doesn't have the flexibility that the node red comes with. This is why people run node red alongside it

I wanted to use this zigbee connection to use on my raspberry pi (with home bridge) to connect sensors like xiaomi’s on my apple home app. Then Using the homebridge Google Home Plug-in, I would be able to control it either with google assistant or Siri. Am I crazy or is it possible?
@notenoughtech

You can connect it with Google services for sure, but I'm not sure about Apple systems. I'm not using Apple stuff myself. That would take more research.

For a long time, Aqara was making hardware for Xiaomi. Now they are branching out. I think they also now have someone making hardware for them too as I have seen non Aqara branded TRVs that looks the same as the latest one.
