Hermann Zilcher (1881 - 1948)
Text: Elisabeth Dauthendey (1854 - 1943)
"Nachtmusik op. 64" for soprano solo, men's choir and orchestra (1929)
Hermann Zilcher was a German composer who worked mainly in the city after his appointment to the Würzburg State Conservatory in 1920. His most significant achievement to this day is the founding of the Mozart Festival Würzburg, whose impact has spread far beyond the city limits. The composition "Nachtmusik op. 64", completed in 1929, is characterized not only by its varied melodies and contrapuntally interwoven layers of sound, but also by a male choir which, according to the instructions, was to be "remotely positioned". The text of the work is based on the poem of the same name by the Würzburg poet Elisabeth Dauthendey (1854 - 1943), who made a name for herself as a campaigner for women's rights, education and empowerment.
