Today we are going to do a deep dive review of Zildjian K Custom Dark Cymbal Pack (or a box set as I like to call it). We'll discuss how these cymbals are different from other lines that Zildjian makes, and as always we'll have a ton of sound samples for you. Included in this Zildjian Cymbal Pack are 5 cymbals: * 14 inch K Custom Dark Hi-Hat Top * 14 inch K Custom Dark Hi-Hat Bottom (Hi-Hat Pair) amzn.to/3RG9BMj * 16 inch K Custom Dark Crash amzn.to/3RIc9tt * 18 inch K Custom Dark Crash amzn.to/41Hxojs * 20 inch K Custom Dark Ride amzn.to/41ECq0h Full Pack: amzn.to/3vhsXjk *If you purchase through the above links, I'll make a tiny commission. That'll make me super happy, as I could buy more drums!*

Bro, i can't believe you actually did this, an actual cymbal demo in which you're playing the cymbals! Genius. These days its alot to ask for. I own a 17" K custom dark crash and a 20" K custom dark ride, they are almost 20yrs old and sound like casting magic! Great review.

Thanks! I try to think "what would I want to see" when I plan these videos. Oh, and wishing I had some old school Darks. 🙂

I bought the K custom dark hi hat for my cymbal setup (which included 2 A custom crashes / china and K ride) Great mixture of sounds for any genre I guess, and I'm happy with it... Oh man... the hi hats are amazing in studio setting and the trashier open sound is very suitable for hard rock or metal. Fantastic musical instrument 🤟🥁🎵

I really dig the custom dark crashes and to my ear they are much nicer than the standard K darks. I have the 16 and 18. The rest of the line is nice but never rocked my socks. If I’m doing all Ks, I go with the custom dark crashes, EAK ride, splash and China, and a Kerope top hat over a Custom special dry bottom hat.

Interesting hihat setup with the Kerope!

@@drumdrumdrum I like a heavy bottom hat with a light top. I like the combo. It’s smooth but not too dark. Good articulation but not shrill.

I have the 20" ride, 18" crash and the 14" hi-hats. Since I'm a soft jazz drummer, I prefer a lower volume with definition and the ride and crash are good for this. However, my hi-hats are disappointing. They are more suited to rock or big band swing. To me, they are "clangy" at low volume instead of "musical".

I forgot to mention that I also have a K Dark Thin 18" crash which is slightly brighter than the K Dark Custom crash in the same weight. I have it paired with my Bosphorus Traditional Medium-Thin 20: Ride. They sound like the K Custom Ride and Crash, only kicked up a notch in brightness - not too much, just enough. (I've been trying to find a pair of 14" hi hats with that Dark Thin sound.) Both sets are wonderful for jazz, pop, light rock and latin. Wood tip sticks and brushes work wonderfully on all of them. @@drumdrumdrum

Cool! I actually have an old K Dark thin 14" that I pull out for recording sessions sometimes. I don't think they make that size for K Dark anymore 😕

I don't know how I feel about those hi hats - Did you feel as though they just wouldn't "open up" very readily?? They just sounded a little "muted" to me over here. I am a Zildjian guy for life, and I know sometimes their cymbals need a bit of a beating before they open up...

They certainly have less stick definition compared to my new beats. I didn't fell they had as much as Zildjian lead on, but they still sound good in their own way. I'm working on some comparison videos as well, and I should have a New Beat/Custom Dark/"mix and match hats" video released December 7.

@@drumdrumdrum Hey, that video sounds like fun! Excited to see it! I just got done with my own "mix and match" session just yesterday in fact. I had an old new beat bottom and some sabian XS 20 stuff and a Quick beat top, as well as my regular post 2013 new beat pair. Conclusion: there's a reason they make the new beats the way they do with the top and bottom hi hats at their respective weights. It's a design that works and nothing can beat a stock pair of new beat hi hats.

I agree. I have the 14" K Custom Dark hi hats and at low volumes, they just sound "clangy". I have a pair of matched Avedis thin hi hats that I bought new in the 60's when I was in a garage band, playing very loud rock & roll. After I transitioned to light jazz in the 70's, I've played them with brushes and light sticks with wonderful definition and they always sound very musical. I can make them whisper in latin beats or jump into a groove with fast jazz. These guys have never, ever let me down. Since then, I've tried New Beats and the K Custom's and hated them. Anybody want to buy like new pair of K Custom's?

Actually, all A-Series cymbals are Avedis. They were just called "Avedis" or "A" back in the days before Zildjian came up with the name, "A-Series" for marketing purposes. They were always made in America. Likewise, at the same time, the "other" Zildjian's available were called "K" (for Kerope) which had to be imported from Turkey via Gretsch drum dealers. There was no "K-Series" back then. They were just called "K's". The "A's" were the brighter "American Zildjian's" and the "K's" were the darker "Turkish Zildjian's" which were used primarily by jazz drummers. Now, both lines are made by the Avedis Zildjian company in America and the lines have blurred in all styles of music. Within the modern A's and K's, there are many, many sub-model lines. The times have changed. @@drumdrumdrum
