A norm is a standard of behavioural expectation shared by group members. It is also a standard setting limits on individual behaviour. Norms denote expected behaviour or even ideal behaviour. Norms are not the same for every group or individuals. They are related to particular groups. Norms are important in any societal setting for a variety of reasons. A normless society is impossible. They give cohesion to society and influence individuals’ attitudes. Values are cultural standards that indicate the general good deemed desirable for organized social life. They refer to intangible qualities or beliefs accepted and endorsed by a given society. Values provide the ultimate meaning and legitimacy for social arrangements and social behaviour. Norms and values are defined by respect, courtesy, discipline and honesty. Respect is a positive feeling or action shown towards someone or something as a result of their abilities, qualities or achievements. It is a positive feeling or action shown towards someone or something considered important or held in high esteem or regard. It is vital for any society or organization because it instils order and a sense of self control among members of a society or community.
