American soldiers in the Vietnam war used to fasten a length of wire through one of the holes in the zippo chimney and lower them into petrol tanks to fill them.

You'd be cleaning it a lot more often, especially the flywheel, and going through wicks a lot more heavily. There's a reason they advise you only use lighter fluid.

you can reduce the smoke by making the wick shorter, i use gasoline in my imco lighter all the time, and noticed, you can have the flame same size as using lighter fluid, with almost twice shorter wick by using gasoline

Smoke=not good, incomplete combustion, particulate. Lighter fluid doesn't make smoke.
@teravolt6113
8 жыл бұрын
Because 1)The excess carbon ruins the wick much faster (remember that the wick is what carries the fuel from the tank up to the burner) 2)Particulate, depending on the size, can be not so good for your health. I tried running mine on Kerosene and the result was the same. The flame was brighter, but it produced smoke like in the video. I had to replace the wick because it soon stopped lighting up.
@aperson4933

You know, zippo fluid is still incomplete combustion, it is just made to not make soot at low concentrations. If you pour a lot of zippo fluid on the ground and light it, it will make soot. Complete combustion is characterized with a solid blue flame. Incomplete combustion is characterized as a yellow or orange flame.
@MMYLDZ

That's why you always need need to carry an oxygen tank with you so that you can turn your lighter into a torch in case you get incomplete combustion like that.

Lighters were invented in 1823 so my guess is they all used some sort of gasoline/petrol that wasn't well cleaned, thus my guess is that there's no problem using petrol it's just that you have darker smoke, more smell and the lighter has to be cleaned out more often cause the darker smoke leaves more black burning marks.

Gasoline is quite a bit more volatile and flammable than "lighter fuel", so it lights up quick er. If you're having trouble lighting your zippo in colder or humid weather you can try using gasoline. Just shorten the wick a bit and it'll work very well as a cheaper alternative. The down side is it's less safe and evaporates faster so your lighter will require more frequent refills as well as wick/flint replacements.

There isn't any smoke when you lower the wick by half i think gasoline burns much harder than zippo fuel other than that i don't think it cause any problem at least as far as i know in the long term it could maybe clog the cotton and wick faster but honestly i think it's no big deal especially when you see the price of lighter fluid,used that in an old fake zippo lighter and i'm surprised how well it works
