I think Curtis summed it up perfectly, I'm not really sure who this recorder is for, It's priced at the higher end for a general all rounder. If you're a film maker spend the little extra money and buy a F6 which has timecode/32 bit/power options. If those features aren't important then buy something cheaper like zoom h5. I feel like zoom are over estimating how many mid ranged film/podcast/musicians there are.

I only manage to listen to the last recording I did. In the Zoom H6 it wasn't an issue at all, I just went to the recording folder inside the H6 & chose one. .. 2. How can I do overdubs on the H8 ? Good review Curtis. The elephant in the room for me is that when that device is fully wired to go - it looks awful. Having cables running in all directions requires a lot of clever cable ties or it will just look like a complete mess. All the other products you showed as alternatives, were better laid out as a design. Reminds me of my Mac Pro trashcan - looks great in the ads. But the place where you need to plug things in and out, if you have that facing the back - you are constantly spinning it around. So like a lot of people I know that use them, I have the trashcan with all the plugs facing out and that beautiful design now looks like a pile of cables. If I was Zoom, I might have been reluctant to name it H8 as well - maybe a hyphen. Way to easy for people start saying they H8 this product. For video would like the timecode option on it as well. But these reviews are so important for people to get a good perspective on purchases these days. Hard to find qualified sales people that know the product- we are so lucky these days to have honest qualified people such as yourself that we can rely on for pre-purchase information. Great job.

Curtis, OK So I see you sing praises for this and I have the H6 myself and love its general versatility for music production and multi-track field recording. However, with the design of this unit and its shape, and with the general design of the H6, let me ask you this. With field recording would you take this device (or the H6) over something from say 'Sound Devices' which seem to be a bit more intuitive in their landscape design and 'baggable' portability. Take away the fact that the companies are of slightly different calibres, and look at it from a substance POV where both devices do similar jobs. Look forward to hearing from you on this! Daniel

Hi Daniel, I'm not saying that I would ever choose a ZOOM H Series recorder over my Sound Devices MixPre, but I'm focused on film sound so that's a natural fit for me. This review is for people who have a $400 budget and need a recorder for lots of different situations, not just film. These people also need to be willing to live with the downsides of a "Swiss Army knife" approach and are ok with the compromises. There are quite a few of those people out there. I'm just not one of them.

Great review! Really enjoying your videos. Been watching this and the one for the F6 (many times). I cannot decide which one to get for my needs. I will mainly record a small choir with two external Rode NT5 microphones and one or two other mics for piano and flute. The 32 bit float with the non clipping and low noise floor on the F6 is really good features for me I guess since I am new to this kind of recording and it would handle "everything" and make me able to handle things in post. At the same time the H8 is very versatile in many ways and I like it as well. The F6 is more expensive, I could use the money for other things if I go for the H8. What would you choose for my needs?

@@curtisjudd Ah I see. I got it anyways cause there wasn't enough dough for the F6. So as it came down to either getting the H8 or another H6 I figured meh why not progress? What's more this has intresting capsles that I'd geek out with. With the EX H8 as you know you get 4 more XLRs with phantom an all. That's now 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos. There's also for convenience and portabibility the VR H8 capsle. Ah and the XA H8 AB part well I was 1 of the people clamoring on and on for AB mics. This is why I say it was a big miss step by zoom when they made the F8N Pro to not give it that connector. Think of it that would be full 7.1.4 Atmos you could then do with that.

Do the gain adjust and compressor/limiters for the internal mics apply before or after ADC? I remember my old Zoom H2 only applied audio adjustments post-amp on the internal mics. If you had a very hot input and attempted to adjust the 'recording level', it would dutifully digitise the clipped input THEN apply simple gain reduction. It ruined a lot of classic F1 car field recordings thanks to that design deficiency. These latest gen Zooms look like they have more competently designed preamp controls but I'm still interested to find out.
@curtisjudd
4 жыл бұрын
I don't know the answer to that, but I do know that starting with the F series, they implemented what they call a hybrid compressor which essentially turns down the analogue preamp by ~10dB, then digitally adds 10dB post ADC for samples that will not clip with the additional 10dB. I suspect they do that here as well but not 100% certain.
@ChristopherWoods
4 жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd ah very interesting, thanks for the reply - that seems like a more sensible design approach! Do you know if there's any limiter circuitry on the analogue side to handle transients or unexpected extreme SPLs? What's the noise floor like on the internal mics, is it feasible to record with them at a very low level to boost?
@curtisjudd
4 жыл бұрын
@@ChristopherWoods ZOOM seems to prefer to process things in the digital domain - I've never heard of them using any sort of analogue limiters or compressors on any of their products. I want to buy the Apollo 8 Firewire from Universal Audio, which I know is a great studio interface but I don´t find any info about the preamp noise floor. I´m hoping that it will be an upgrade (in the signal to noise). Do you know that detail about this Apollo? Do you thing is an upgrade (lower noise)?
@curtisjudd
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alberto, I don't think there's a big difference in terms of self-noise when using condenser microphones. The main difference is that the Apollo maxes out at +65dB of gain while the F4 can supply up to +75dB. So if you will be using dynamic mics and might need to push more than 65dB of gain, the F4 may be the better option. The real magic of the Apollo is the UAD plugins. I do think the Apollo preamps have a bit more character than the F4 - a bit more low-end warmth, perhaps.

Hey Curtis, I finally did get the Zoom H8, and both issues the power on slow time and noisy playback are both fixed by firmware but I don't get to find a guide for firmware update or an easy way of doing it, can you help? :)
@curtisjudd

Hi Hagop - download the new firmware and place it on an SD card which has already been formatted in the H8. Be sure to put it in the root directory (not in one of the folders). Put the card back in the H8 and while powering the H8 on, press and hold the play button. The screen will then ask if you want to update. Press yes. Also, before you start, be sure to put fresh batteries in the H8 or connect a USB battery bank.

Fantastic review as always with you. Do you think it's still worth getting a non 32 bit recorder for an independant filmmaker? I don't really understand why they don't put that feature in all of their new models now that it exists... but I might be missing something
@curtisjudd
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles-Elie, the hardware required for wide dynamic range 32-bit float recording is not cheap. If they did put it in the H8, the price would be substantially higher. And, 32-bit float is pretty niche in terms of usefulness. For film production, we're generally recording dialogue and sound effects. And most of that can be recorded very nicely at 24-bit. In fact, the big budget movies are all recorded in 24-bit.
@Charles-Elie

@@curtisjudd I get it, thanks a lot for explaining. I just find the idea of never clipping super useful when I'm managing at the same time light, camera, sound and direction on small gigs. On big budget movies they have a guy with an eye on the meters full time, it does help a lot :D

Hi Smood47, they're pretty different and really for different situations. The Yeti is for voice over or streaming - a cardioid pickup pattern well suited for that. The included microphones on the H8 are a stereo pair to capture a wide stereo field - great for ambient recordings or sound effects, but not ideal for spoken word recordings.

Ah as for who it's fore. Yeah also the F recorders sound dare I say for those that haven't heard the 744-T more real. Not to say this nor the H6 don't sound good. Curtis maybe you can help me find a way to explain this in a way but to not make it like I'm trashing the H6 sound. It's just well the F recorders have more of an ultra real sound. Where the H6 sounds like a real good DSLR or like a news brodcast kinda thing real. I don't know the F 1s just sound more real if you will. Just don't know how you'd explain to someone that's not an audio geek without leading them to think the H6 is trash. I mean to show people the sound of the F recorders I use that little Hollywood sound goes indi add Zoom made but there was nothing like that for the H6 for contrasting the 2.

Zoom's insistence to create 'unique' bevels/angles packaging design is creating obnoxious product cabling and portable packaging use. With all wires installed it looks like an octopus, is very non-bag-friendly placing undue strain on plugs/jacks, and nooks/crannies are dirt/dust magnets hard to clean. The Engineering keeps getting better with Zoom but their Marketing staff has allowed the final user's need to drift. Not good thinking.

Definitely not made for bags. That "Swiss army knife" approach definitely results in several compromises. Not the right recorder for specialists. But could be a good choice for some.
