I think if it was heavier it would have had similar problems to SOC. I also see what they were going for with the mesh pattern across the front of the ptero chest piece. The problem is the diagonal lines kind of get hidden because of this. This version definitely n looks awesome though (other than the “dead” eyes)

Yeah, I always scoff a little when people complain about a toy being too light (without good reason) or praise random application of metal (which _can_ be used well; look at the Japanese vs American Lightspeed Rescue Megazord). I just don't get why people want their toys to be unnecessarily heavy, thus harder to pick up and play with, especially when that weight can actively ruin a toy (Legacy Dragonzord's combinations, and Titanus' hands too iirc). Or, heck, not only the weight, but just connecting plastic to metal can have disastrous consequences due to each having different amounts of flexibility and what-not if not designed properly. I couldn't care less about metal in my toys. Just design them well. I also personally like the aesthetics of ZAP Dino Megazord, but it doesn't seem worth that price to me, especially knowing Hasbro's QC as well as I do.

At this price point Transformers are titan class in size, which is around 20-24 inches in height. They've also made combiners at this size, Devastator and Predaking. Each limb was also far more complex with fully posable robot modes, vehicle/beast modes, and limb modes. If this were comparable to Titan class, I would get it at this price. But as is, it's way too pricey compared to Hasbros other giant combining robots.

Both had less paint and articulation in the individual bots, I owned them. Look at commander class figures like Motormaster, he's 100 pounds and that's not including the other 4 stunticons which deluxe figs cost 24 each so a complete menasor will rack up to 184. I think the price point on this figure is more than fair. I owned the SOC and he was a brick, a pretty brick at that but stupid expensive. This one has the paint apps, the articulation (which is the best by far) and the engineering. Cost of plastic has gone up and I feel like people don't look in toy shops to see how much more expensive everything is. Titan class legacy Metroplex is over 225 on Smyth's toys

Gonna have a 12 hour road trip today and this video drops during the 3rd hour. Looking forward to this man. Honestly from what people have been showing, I'd say the best thing about this thing is the articulation and long-term playability. Yeah the old DX and Legacy can be played with more but not really for poses while the SOC is art but I haven't met anyone that is comfortable with playing with it so given the price is in the middle, I still say it's a bit too much for what I can get financially but with a decent sale this is a deal

The price and Hasbro's seeming lack of quality assurance are the two main things keeping me from grabbing this. Dragonzord is my favorite zord ever and I am very tempted to get it. I hope future ZAP releases go in chronological order (Thunder, Ninja, Shogun, Zeo, etc). I was very pleased with the standalone Zeo Megazord that was released a couple years ago. As someone who only ever displays Megazords in combined mode, it was the perfect solution for me. Highly detailed and articulated. But it appears they have no future plans for more. :(

My guess about the leg connections being simplified isn’t that Hasbro thought they aren’t up to it. It’s very likely all about cost. They want the parts count as low as possible. If there’s a simpler way to do something? They’ll do it. I don’t know who designed this ZAP figure, but I hope they were imported from, or at least consulted with, the Transformers team. They’ve had years and years of experience in mass market general release combining giant robots. I’m a big TF fan myself. I love the Dinozords because they remind me of TF and Voltron. I saw a lot of similar combiner engineering methods used in ZAP. As I’m a slut for giant robots with great articulation, I’m super interested in this bot. Especially that ab crunch. I’m not gonna lie, I fully intend to put the Dino Megazord up against Devastator or Trypticon in pics. Badass action posing would be helpful. As well as his humungous scale. I feel like the design team followed Hasbro’s standard giant robot combiner model. That’s generally a priority on the combined form. Individual modes are secondary, to a degree. If compromising a feature on an individual bot would make for a better combined mode? They would probably compromise that feature. A perfect example is the Combiner Wars Devastator. I went with a 3rd party option for mine. Really thorough review. I appreciated the historical comparisons. It was fascinating to see the evolution of the Dinozord toys. Not to mention your solid editing and composition skills. Good vid!

The scale switch critique reminds me of how I used to collect Power Ranger action figures, but stopped when Samurai switched the scale from roughly 1/12 to 1/18 scale. Then, Megaforce switched the scale to 5 inch, technically close to what came before but too noticeably small for me. Then, the Legacy collection jumped to 6.5-7 inch figures which were too big and didn't even match the 5 inch line! The current Lightning Collection and basic line going to universal 6 inch is what got me back into collecting them as they are close enough to 1/12 scale for me and match perfectly with most of my other figures.

Best ZAP Megazord review to date, you really hit it out of the park with comparisons with past iterations. I think you priced the SoC a bit too high though, understand it may have cost you £300, but that would have been after whatever importer added their margin on top of retail, which was around ¥30,000 or ~£185. There's really much less of a gap in the RRP of the SoC and ZAP releases which really makes its short comings hard to swallow at full price.

I'm not sure about UK prices, but in the states the SOC retailed at $300 USD, same as SOC Voltron. So yeah, nearly twice as much as ZAP (though to be fair, something like ZAP would have cost a lot less back when SOC came out).

Just got mine for my birthday! Never had any version of the OG Megazord (the only one I missed between MMPR and Lost Galaxy!) So it's really cool to have a version of this at last. I'll take articulation over heft any day of the week. In my opinion die cast should only really be used in the feet of combiners for stability but that can lead to paint chipping on the bottom - by using light plastic it means the bases of the feet can be more screen accurate without the need for stability panels. You can see Hasbro have learned a lot about articulation, stability and posing of larger figures from the Transformers Titan class and Combiner Wars sets. If you compare the ZAP Behaviors and Legacy Menasor to their earlier attempts it's a night and day difference. I can't see me picking up the Dragonzord (never been a fan of the combinations) but the Astro Megazord (and Delta Megazord??) are definitely on my watch list.

You say that as if Hasbro absolutely owns the right to the Minipla models, but do they? They might have to license those from Bandai, who designed and own the copywrite for them. They could potentially do that, but I do see merit in making original designs, especially since upscaling a small toy doesn't work as well you'd think. They still have to modify them a lot to make them look and feel good at a large scale. It's not nearly as simple as you think. Of course, Hasbro's been designing toys for decades. You'd think they could do better. Edit: Actually, it's less the design that's problematic, and more the QC and stuff that they get away with because they make millions anyway, "so why should we care?"

As a previous owner of the Legacy Megazord and a current owner of this, this one is leagues better in every way. People hold that Legacy one on a pedestal when it's just a giant brick that can't and doesn't do anything. Also, it's funny seeing people complain about the price when combining transformers are at an equal or greater price and this is definitely higher quality than them. Feels like people have decided it's bad before it even came out (because Hasbro bad🙄) and aren't moving off that position despite all of the evidence.

I can tell you why: the SOC is still too recent. They started too quickly after that AND having just released their own combining Dino Megazord just 2 years ago. The market's saturated. I’m just going to say this. If you want heft and feel. Go for the SOC/Legacy version. If you want longevity and playability, go with this one. Hasbro prioritizes those features because they treat their toys more like action figures that can and will be played with. Even Hasbro’s Titan class figures don’t feel that heavy because they will topple over if they were. I’ve handled plenty of figures that were amazingly articulated, but it was all almost useless because attempting to use it caused the figure to take a nose dive to the floor. Jimbo’s Devesator comes to mind as one such case.

This is their first full-fledged collector-grade Megazord so I still give the excuse of them still working out the kinks. As one who's been with Hasbro through Transformers, they do listen to backlash and of course will try to fix the problems. TF for a year or 2 had a major problem with Clear Plastic being immensely brittle, namely through 2019 and 2021 where ones like SS86 Jazz's roof was completely CP which lead to a barrage of breakage complaints. This year, they've remedied it some as the Legacy line has made quite the quality jump with it's use of Clear Plastic. Bulkhead's entire chest section is made of the blue Clear plastic and I've hardly heard any breakage reports, so they've clearly done something over at Hasbro/Takara.

Fantastic overview/reveiw I think the ZAP line has real potential, and it's heart is certainly in the right place - But untill Hasbro gets off the fence and fully invests in making that extra push with items geared towards the older buyers, i feel like it's going to be forever caught in limbo. Too expensive and articulated to be a clack around the floor kids toy, but doesnt have the extra bells and whistles to really satisfy the older fan it's pushing towards. And as costs continue to skyrocket (especially for us in the UK) it's going to get harder and harder to justify buying in. I never expected SoC quality, but i at least expected a bigger run at it... Still though, if we ignore the cost of entry, it's a very decent starting point to the line, and the only way is up! (hopefully)

I have to agree with that last comment. No Dino Megazord has ever been perfect. That being said, there are several obvious ways this could have been designed better, and I'm disappointed enough that I canceled my preorder. Here is what a truly improved Megazord would have: Rolling wheels for Triceratops and Sabretooth Tiger Shorter legs for Tyrannosaurus and Megazord Folding panels and articulated trunk for Mastodon (as mentioned) Better joints for the Pterodactyl head Option of 1-piece or 2-piece tail for Tyrannosaurus waist articulation Power (Mega) Sword molded in black and painted silver to avoid paint chipping Effects pieces for the sword and Cranium Cannon Ratchet joints for the Tyrannosaurus knees so that it can't flop forward That's all I can think of for now. I feel like I've got different priorities than a lot of collectors. A lot of things that I've seen you others mention as negatives don't bother me in the slightest, or are positives. Like the weight. I'm happy to have a Megazord that isn't loaded down in die-cast, as heft for the sake of it doesn't really do anything for me, and I'd rather have poseability. The non-show accurate extra details work for me too. I like that it's doing something different. I've already got tons of nearly identical looking Megazords. Then there's things that lots of people seem to like that are negatives for me. Like I don't care for the fancy box. I'd rather have a cheaper box that just does its job, as it will go in the trash as soon as I get the toy out. I'd also get rid of the chrome sword if it was up to me. I don't have good experiences with chromed toys. Overall I think I'll like this version of the Megazord. It looks fun, and the price seems reasonable given the current prices of other toys. It's a ton better than the Legacy version, but not as polished as the SOC one, and I think that's a perfect spot for it. I want to get it in hand and see how it compares to Hasbro's other recent combiner, Menasor.

Dude you read my mind. People think it's cheap and only care for heft, yet forget it's painted all over, has extra features and has articulation like an ab crunch. Cost of toys and figures have gone up nowadays and to be honest I feel like the price is fair.

Your review I feel gives it the fairest evaluation. There's one other review that gives the history of the megazord but yours is a lot more thorough. Thank you for your review, your megazord reviews are my favorite power rangers content on youtube.

Honestly, I wish they'd redo Samurai, Mega Force, & both their Super seasons, 'cause we srsly got short sheeted with their zords. Also, I still wish we'd gotten a Sub Surfer zord & Beast X King zord from Ninja Steel & Beast Morphers respectively!

If they do the 1/144 scale accurately, the Zeo Megazord (78.5 m) would be 2x the size of the Dino Megazord (41.7 m). The mini Ranger figures are also slightly bigger compared to Gundam human figures of the same scale.

I feel the reason why Hasbro's Zap Dino megazord looks different with it's astethic because Habro said mixed it with Sentai concept art of zyuranger ( like the clear shoulders and the pterodactyl teeth). And they want differentiate themselves from other Dino Megazords that look the same!

We seem to be in agreement, it's not bad, but the overall quality just doesn't justify the huge price tag, especially the UK price. It's insane! One thing I do need to point out though, you mentioned the Triceratops doesn't have pop out tracks... It actually does! They're just really well popped in.

Fellow tokusatsu fan here, the ZAP Dino Megazord has a similar case with SH Figuarts Shinkocchou Ultraman Tiga from last year. They both have flaws on the materials Bandai and Hasbro used for their collector's figure. When you mention the quality of the plastic, this reminds me of the issue of the paint chip of Ultraman Tiga's rubber torso. Both figures are a hit and miss created by both Bandai and Hasbro, in terms of a collector's item for collectors to keep. Although I don't own both figures, I watched videos and reviews of Tokusatsu merchandise in general.

Instead of the paper bags, they should have just had smaller boxes with a snugger fit to keep the individual zords inside and keep them from rumbling around inside the larger box. As for the joint issues and paint job issues, Transformers fans/collectors say welcome to the club. Especially nowadays it's like QC at Hasbro is nonexistent, that's why if I can get a TakaraTomy Masterpiece version of a Transformer that's what I'm doing.

I'm seeing it more as an MMPR take on Gundam models (only, it's not as "build-your-own". It's to the same scale as my RX-78 and Zaku II. The fact that it coordinates with other zones from that MMPR wave, how many previously released Megazords combine with Dragonzord? They also have opening cockpits (or as the FAA says in 2022, "flight decks"). I'm going to have to custom paint the 1/144 scale rangers though.

Interested to see your take on the ZAP Dragonzord. I honestly think that the ZAP Dragonzord in Battlemode might be one of my favorite zord toys every produced. Its large, more proportionate to the show (due to the Dragonzord being scaled down as opposed to Megazord sized), and with the weaknesses of the Pterodactyl and T-Rex not being involved, its really solid feeling.

So from what I've seen of this release is that it's essentially not bad, but not impressive enough to warrant buying yet another Dino Megazord; especially since I already have the legacy rerelease and the SOC. However that being said I desperately want some sort of rerelease of the Mega Voyager seeing as mine, (and from what I can tell a majority of people,) is broken and I most certainly would be interested to see what a ZAP version would be capable of. On another note I totally agree with your point about the original connection for the knees and I think even with the SOC the peg connection method feels cheap in comparison.

I am really looking forward to seeing how the dragonzord combining with this and this things enhanced articulation. All that extra weight, are these joints going to hold up to still allow all the movement? I mean if it does then kudos. I'm just a little bit apprehensive.

I’m honestly really shocked with the the possibility on this guy. Tbh, it’s probably why the plastic is much lighter, soul of chogokin figures had some issues getting into dynamic poses so this in a way makes sense. A couple years ago I got into transformers cus I was just sort of unsatisfied with the posing and partsforming nature of megazord figures but this really sings to me unlike any other combiner. The additions of elbows, knees, waist swivels, ankle tilts and even an ab crunch is actually more articulation than any of the transformers combiner figures (well, official ones anyway) and outclasses things like all the 2015/2016 Scramble combiners and shockingly, the similarly priced Titan Class Predaking figure while having near perfect proportional representations of both the core robot and the individual zords themselves. Frankly I just feel sorrow for major fans of both series as, seemingly, both franchises are going to get a combiner each year for next decade. Sounds fun until you realise ZAP costs about 150 and Menasor costs 180 to collect, and that they’ll likely inflate in price as the years go on

Well said and a very good review. I totally agree. You made some excellent points re the quality, pricing and packaging. I was very disappointed and think it's very pricey and personally would have preferred some die cast elements instead of the poseability. I kept cringing when you dropped the zords, not the best setting to be filming on a tarmac surface! You seem to abuse your Megazords! 😄 Also, I think you need another original Megazord as yours is sun bleached 😜 unless you have another one stored away! 😄

This is my third review I've seen of the ZAP megazord so far and the one i was waiting for the most before i made my final decision on buying it. While your review was definitely less scathing than the others I think I'm going to hold off on this iteration of zords and pick up the flame toys line when it releases. I already own the SOC and Legacy line and will probably wind up ditching the legacy toys as the die cast over time is starting to show its age and on my shelves they're basically statues, I also have an incomplete set since by the time I decided to buy legacy Titanus it was over 3X MSRP aftermarket which is what made me pull the trigger on SOC in the first place. Thanks for the quality in depth review and fantastic video as always.

See, I disagree. There's already been so many Dino Megazords in the last 5 years alone, that it's definitely feeling over saturated. Couple that with the first figure in an experimental collector's-driven line, and I would have liked to see some beta testing first. You could say the 2020 Megazord was a beta test, but definitely not for collectors. If they'd started with say Zeo, rather than ever having done that non-transforming one, that would have been great. Zeo in itself was a starting point, a refresh of the brand after 3 years of the Mighty Morphin saga. Zeo is still fairly recognizable as Megazords go, it still has an animal theme and it still adheres to a similar layout in the Megazord form as the Dino one did. Plus, I think the Zeo Zords much more aesthetically fit in with the new vibe they're going for. Hammer out some details and issues with that Zord that will still definitely sell well, and bring in the OG once the kinks have been ironed out. I think that would drastically improve the negative feedback this thing is getting since people would probably just be happy to be getting a new-age Zeo set (or even In Space, or Thunder if they absolutely have to pull from MMPR). You can't deny that the vast majority of negative criticism this thing is getting is thanks in part to the SOC having been so recently released.

Packaging not withstanding, I think it's worth remembering that hasbro (along with takara) have been producing transformers for decades. The ZAP line is essentially applying transformers design concepts and construction to a megazord. Maybe it doesn't feel as beefy or solid but to me seems like a better overall design in terms of posability and balance. Price matches a lot of the more "premium" transformers releases from the last couple decades. I'm hopeful these will age much better than the Bandai releases as well. Most of ky transformers that are older than most megazords haven't had any breakages. I've always thought they were just better engineered than Bandai megazords Frankly I think this is a huge win! Def some valid criticisms but as I have other expensive hobbies I'm glad for the ZAP line especially with the Astro Megazord coming next.

I received mine today. Issue that I have from a quality point is that I have quite a few details with badly applied paint. I can fix those myself with my model paint, but at this price I expect it to be perfect. I really like the design and it's a huge upgrade to my 1993/4 version. One thing I would change are the knees. I feel they're not far enough in the legs (hopefully you understand what I mean) and if you look at the zord from an higher angle, it looks like the knees aren't correctly attached. But at least it's not as bad as it was with the legacy version. And, well, another thing is that the yellow of the shoulders doesn't fit the other shades of yellow. Anyways, I've already preordered the Dragonzord.

I got my copy last month, and had my fair share of the QC issue as well. Mine was mainly on the paint apps from each zords, each of them are either outlined or smudged in certain parts, which is hard to overlook. And i do agree on the miscalculation of the tail section once it is split into 2 parts, funny how hasbro could have missed this. Such a waste that it seems Hasbro is trying to make this as a premium figure, but with so many missed opportunities. It almost made me felt like i was just buying the box itself. I do compliment the figure for being quite poseable, but still there are so much problem that cannot be overlook at the same time.

First video of yours that I have seen, and very impressed. Really indepth, and considers the pros and cons in a very well balanced way. Great stuff. As for the Megazord itself....I can't help but feel like it got hit by some budget issues. You can tell this was made with a lot of love and thought, but then there are these small things that just clash, like the hip panels not being pinned in, or the cheaper materials. It makes me wish they had leaned a bit more into delivering that midrange premium quality, where it's not as good as the SOC but better than more kid focused stuff like the regular Zords. You can tell that's what they were going for, only to be held back by these issues. Real shame, I would have happily paid more for a better quality figure.
