I am in nc as well. I started testing zenith zoysia seed last year as well, but I overseeded weedy areas and learned that zoysia actually loves being soaked. I'm going to do some videos as well and share my strategy, which involves taking that clay and running a cultivator and mixing it with compost "soil 3", then running a 270 pound roller over top once the zoysia is spread. I've got a ton of hill areas, so we'll see if rolling it prevents it from washing down

if you are going through all the trouble of cutting sod into plugs you may want to consider really getting in there and shredding them to get sprigs. You need to have your ducks in a row in terms of top dressing and water because it will dry quickly but I have found that to be the most effective method of live plant transplanting. Rather by accident I did that in a few places and I had season one coverage. All the plugged areas struggled and are just now beginning to spread profusely, though that was in a live fescue yard.

Looking forward to see this move along! I was also going to plug via sod, but learned that sod is not very good for making plugs out of. It just doesn't have the root mass. Try to find actual plugs, there is a big difference.

I thought about that too. I talked to someone who used made their own and it sounds like they worked but were likely less quick to spread. Probably due to the root issue you mentioned. However, that's a farcheaper solution. I was going to order plugs online but I would need quite a few so they get pricey fast. Reseeding is also an option.

Have had zenith for years in NC. Found certainty will kill poa through spot spraying with no harm to zoysia. Spray as soon as you notice weed growing and dont let it seed. Good luck.

Lot of patience and work. It will deffinantly be something to be proud of. Do you plan on overseeding the entire area on top of doing sod plugs?

I would have reseeded once I realized the storms hit me so bad. You probably remember the 2 large storm cells we had last year that gave us 3.0 GPH rain levels. I should have reseeded areas once I saw the grass coming in in other places.

I'd very strongly urge you to go get a soil test first. The low end is about $20 or so. I'd go for the full test that tell you the micro-nutrients like calcium, iron, manganese and such. Fix the pH of the soil if required, and e-mail the folks at Super-Sod and send them the soil report and get their input. They are awesome and usually respond promptly. The instructions say you need seed to soil contact, so you may want to forego the sand step unless you mix soil in with it. If you're taking the grass all the way down to soil, you'll get great results if you have adequate sunlight. If your soil is correct, you'll start seeing the first little seedlings popping through the soil at about 8-10 days, but only here and there. Then over the next week or so you'll see a lot of small growth. Just make sure you do not use any type of weed & seed as the weed part may contain pre-emergent herbicides that could kill the new seedlings as they germinate. At this time of year, you'd probably want to wait 2-3 days after applying glyplhsate to put down seed to be 100% safe. In the middle of summer when the microbes in the soil are fully active, they eat the glyphosate like crazy and break it down fast enough you could put down seed they day after if you have decent soil. As long as your soil is above 60 degrees consistently, and you fix any soil issues, you should be good to go! I also put down an application of Milorganite. It puts down a little extra nitrogen (which you do not want to overdo with Zoysia), but it gives the soil a good amount of organic matter to pull from. It doesn't smell great, but after a rain or two the smell will be gone. It smells but it is great for your soil. Once my Zoysia starts to green up, I'll fertilize and add another application of Milorginite. Then next year, or maybe the following year you'll need to start doing core aeration or dethatching the lawn. That's why you don't want to put too much nitrogen on Zoysia. Too much nitrogen will drastically increase the thatch layer which can cause problems getting water and fertilizer and herbicides down past the thatch layer into the soil. Once your Zoysia grows in, if your lawn is anywhere near level, it will be like walking on carpet. I was talking to Chris, one of the owners of Super-Sod and I think about a month after putting down my seed I was able to spray some herbicides to beat back some weeds. I used 2, 4D and Quinclorac. Both kill broadleaf weeds, but the Quinclorac also kills crabgrass. One a new lawn like that, you won't want to use a surfactant, so you may not get optimum results. I did a split application about two weeks apart, and it kicked the crap out of my crabgrass with the first application. I had several spots of sedge in my lawn and the first application definitely affected it, but the follow up application knocked it out. I mowed the first time several days after the 2nd application (last fall) and i still do not see any sedge coming back. I'm happy with that because sedge isn't a controlled weed on either label. I get my herbicides from DoMyOwn.com. They charge a little bit more, but they have professionals on staff that can answer questions, make recommendations and help you identify weeds if like me, you have no clue what most weeds are. I wish I'd have availed myself of their knowledge because the main weed I was trying to kill was what I thought was crabgrass, but part was crabgrass and the main part was a different weed called goose grass, which wasn't affected. Someone had uploaded a photo of goose grass and called it crabgrass, so my research was faulty. So I had to go back and remove it by hand. I didn't want to pull the weed up by the roots as the original poster said, it can pull up fair amounts of newly germinating Zoysia too. So I just cut the weed off at ground level using my Tanto tipped knife and it worked great. Goose grass grows similar to crabgrass - low and wide, and it covers a lot of soil which blocks sunlight to the new seeds so I wanted to get rid of it, and I wanted to get rid of it before it had a chance to drop new seeds. Both crabgrass and goose grass are annual weeds that die around the first frost and come back the following year from seeds, so I wasn't worried about the weeds coming back this year from the root system. Either I did a good job getting these removed before seeds dropped or they haven't started growing this year because I don't see any crabgrass or goose grass in my lawn. Pre-emergent herbicides can slow the spread of Zoysia so you will probably want to just mow low and frequently to encourage the spread of your Zoysia, and suppress the weeds. The Zoysia will definitely crowd out the majority of the weeds over the summer and fall. Once fall gets here though, you should be in good shape to put down a pre-emergent to stop the winter weeds from overtaking your lawn during the winter. Also, do NOT use the impact sprinklers. Their water distribution sucks. Get a water timer and some Melnor oscillating sprinklers. I started with 5 cheap osciallating sprinklers and every one of them died in the first month. I was able to cover that same area with 4 oscillating Melnor sprinklers which were much higher quality, and since I only needed 4 instead of 5, I paid less for the quality brand. With the Melnor brand (and maybe others?) you can adjust the spray angle of the outer edges of the spray, and it is easier to control how far the spray goes in each direction as well. The worst part was because of the cheap oscillating sprinklers breaking, it left me with about 1,000 sq. ft. of dead Zoysia that I need to fix this year because I got screwed by Mother Nature and a crap weatherman last year and put my seed down too late to fix it last year. You can't use a drop spreader or normal walk behind spreader to distribute the seed in my opinion. I bought a Scotts Wizz spreader (a handheld spreader) and used maybe the 2nd or 3rd setting and it worked perfectly. Buy enough seed to do at least 1 pound per 1,000 sq. ft. If you go heavier, you may get more dense growth. You could save some extra seed to reseed places that get washed out by rain, and I'd recommend getting a plugging tool for about $39 from Amazon so you can pull plugs from places that are thick, and put the Zoysia plugs in places that are not filling in as well. Then you can just fill in those holes where you pulled plugs from using bags of top soil with starter fertilizer mixed in so the Zoysia can quickly recover those bare spots.
